Specialties

Lincoln Peak Vineyard makes 10 wines (from dry to sweet), all them entirely from grapes grown in the 12-​acre vineyard. Lincoln Peak’s grape varieties are cold-​hardy and make bright and lively wines.

History

Established in 2001.

The Granstrom family planted 12 acres of cold-​hardy grapevines in Vermont’s Champlain Valley starting 10 years ago, and Lincoln Peak Vineyard has grown into one of the largest grape producers in the state. We’re a family farm devoted to sustainable farming practices and the creation of new and delicious wines.

We tend our vines with care, and all our grapes are picked by hand each autumn. We make wine in the barn we built, with meticulous devotion to the best winemaking techniques. We make our wine with our own grapes, and we’re committed to 100% Vermont grape wines. We make bright, crisp whites, hearty reds, joyful dry rosés, and some sweet and fruity wines, too. Our wines have won three Best-​in-​Show awards at the International Cold Climate Wine Competition in the past few years, and we’re proud of what we grow and make.

Business Owner

Chris has worked in agriculture in Addison County since 1974. In 1980 he started an apple tree nursery and then a pick-​your-​own strawberry farm on his current land in New Haven. After nearly 25 years of growing strawberries, Chris learned about new varietals of winegrapes that are hardy enough for Vermont winters and starting planting vines in 2001. His vineyard is now 12 acres and he makes 100% estate-​bottled wines right on the farm, just north of Middlebury.

When it comes to wineries one might think Napa Valley/​Sonoma for the West Coast and Finger Lakes for the East Coast. Who’da’thunk that there was one in the heart of Vermont? I was with friends and my two kids on a Friday summer afternoon and had our tasting to ourselves. For five dollars you get to try five wines and the souvenir glass (TIP: If you plan to be in the area again, keep the glass. Bring it back with you and the tasting if free.) You can buy wine by the glass and enjoy the pond view from the side porch while noshing on snacks that pair well.
I am not much of a red wine drinker but found the Ragtime Red to be outstanding since this is a wine you can chill for the warmer months and I think you can also heat it and add some additional spices for the winter.
La Crescent I thought was a very good semi-​dry white that would go with a good curry or fish.
Lastly, having never tried currant wine, I give props for their dessert wine, Cassis. This will remain on my wine shelf until I can find a really good piece of chocolate or truffle.

Really unprofessional staff member turned me off of these guys — I have purchased their dessert wine before and was looking forward to stopping by their station at the Middlebury Summer Festival to taste their wines. I went up to them with about 15 minutes left in the festival, they had a few people who were at their table tasting the wines and when I attempted to give the man my token — he said «sorry, the festival is over, they won’t let me serve anyone else.» He then continued to pour new tastings for the people in front of me over and over again. I was kind of in disbelief at the gall of this guy to deny me with some poor excuse, then to continue to pour new tastings to people right in front of me. Needless to say I won’t be purchasing anything from them in the future. Just plain rude. Happy to buy from other local vineyards with staff members who care about their customer’s experience.

Vermont and vineyards… dismiss your cynicism!
I went here for a social event one sunny warm summers afternoon in June. We sat by the pond, the frogs croaked and the breeze wafted… we could easily have been in Oregon or California… and we tasted wine! Lincoln Peak is not what you would expect to find in Vermont. Vermont now even has a wine trail and a passport to locate the vineyards, cos’ there are several throughout the State. The selection of wines, all grown and produced on the 12 acres of the vineyard was impressive. I like dry wine so the sweeter offering were not to my taste, but their Black Sparrow 13, a dry crisp white was VERY good… so I bought some to take home!
They even make their own cassis from their own blackcurrants… and blackcurrants are so hard to find in the US as the humble bush was banned for decades.
I was really impressed with the quality of the Lincoln Peak vineyard and will take much more notice of local produced wine. Sara who did our tasting is a bubbly fun person who knows about wine from her father, who took his 30 years of strawberry farming knowledge and reinvigorated the family farm as a vineyard. Faith he had and he has been rewarded!
For $ 5.00 you get to taste the whole selection and then you get to take your glass home… if you bring it back you can have another free tasting every time!
Hailing from the UK I know how in the last 20 years UK wine quality has developed and now produces some award winning world class sparkling wines. Vermont is on the right path… and that is the only benefit I can see that global warming has had!
And don’t forget… it’s all local…

Found this vineyard by accident looking for a local covered bridge.
Wine was pretty good.
This vineyard though is on a beautiful spot. Just walking around on the grounds made the whole day worth waking up for, it was really stunning.
The young lady in the tasting room was very nice, and VERY knowledgeable about the wines, and the processes they use.

I really do like their white wines. And I love the setting and atmosphere. Their Friday music events are fantastic. However, I’m very disappointed in the amount of wine they pour into a glass. At the last music event, they filled every field surrounding the winery/​vineyard with cars. So they were making a killing on the half-​full small wine glasses that they were consistently pouring. Every now and then I saw a slightly higher than half-​full pour, but for the most part the level was low. I wasn’t looking to get drunk, but I like to get my money’s worth on two glasses of wine. I decided to look up the amount of wine that should be in a wine glass, and apparently it’s not regulated in Vermont, so the pour is strictly up to the restaurant, winery, etc. Lame pours here.

I recently read a short review on the LPV «La Crescent» white, which was very favorable. I ordered a small supply of the 2011 which we enjoyed this past weekend. La Crescent is a cold-​hardy varietal created at the U of Minn, ideally suited to northern VT’s deep winter freezes. It was a LOVELY summer wine with a «Sauvignon Blanc» nose, a refreshing acidity, with a squirt of gooseberries which adds a touch of sweetness and roundness in the mouthfeel. We really enjoyed this wine, and it was better than any white wine we have ever had grown and crafted in VT. We will feature it at our summer party in Manchester in August. Highly recommended!

This was the best winery we visited on this tour: I ended up with three bottles. The La Crescent 09, and the late harvest of the same grape, were outstanding whites. Their starlight rose was the best rose i’ve had in vermont, and that’s after five wineries this week. Sarah was super nice, very accommodating and fun and friendly. The setting is picturesque too – all in all a wonderful place to stop!

So… this is a winery… and the wine isn’t so hot. Can amazing wine come from Vermont? I dunno.
BUT, the point is that this place is really neat! I went here as part of a wine/​beer tour in Vermont. They took us on a tractor ride! And had tastings paired with cheese! And let us roam the fields! Gave us a complimentary wine glass! And it was beautiful, too. Man, I thought it was pretty cool… so cool that I bought a couple bottles! They weren’t expensive… but as I drank them later, I realized it’s not the best wine.
I’m rating it 4 stars for the experience and 2 for the wine. If you are taking a relaxing vacation in Vermont, I would recommend checking this place out!
