Soons Orchards and Farm Market is 100 years old and growing strong. We grow over 50 kinds of apples and 20 kinds of peaches and nectarines; summer vegetables, winter squash, pumpkins, and the best sweet corn. We grind our own peanut butter, make our famous applesauce and apple cider donuts, and we press our own delicious apple cider. Fresh scratch pies by Scotty’s Country Kitchen are a must-​have.

We feature local foods — grass-​fed beef, free range eggs, goat cheese, honey, maple syrup, premium local milk, and more. We sample daily, do cooking demos and classes, and offer a monthly Dinner at the Farm. Our U-​Pick apple orchard, with kid-​friendly trees and great apples, is open weekends starting Labor Day. Hay wagon rides to our U-​Pick pumpkin patch start late September. Soons is just 65 miles from NYC Visit us for the best apples, apple-​picking and more nearly all year round. History

Established in 1910.

In 1910, William Soons, an electrical engineer living and working in NYC, decided to move north and try his hand at dairy farming. A student of horticulture since his youth in England, William was soon planting trees — hardwoods, plus apple, pear and peach trees. And Soons Orchards was born. His son, Sinclair, became the next farming Soons, as he expanded wholesale apple sales and the dairy. Sinclair married Helen, a New York City transplant and a school teacher who grew up in a family store setting. Their son Arthur, completed college at Princeton University and army service before settling down with Sandra, a Nebraska native and Vassar graduate. Since 1959, Art and Sandy transformed the farm from a sleepy wholesale operation to a vibrant retail and community hub. Today son Jeffrey, also an attorney, runs orchard and farm operations; daughter Laura founded Scotty’s Country Kitchen in 1987; and Sharon returned to manage retail operations after many years in NYC.

Manager

I’m sharon, youngest of three, and I run the retail side of the business, while my brother handles «production» — i.e. growing of all the apples and peaches and everything else we grow; our sister started Scotty’s Country Kitchen which makes the pies and baked goods we have.

I left the farm for college and didn’t return til 17 years later. Lived and worked in NYC, doing a little bit of everything at several environmental non-​profits. It was fun, but now I’m back and having fun helping bring great local food to our awesome customers.

Thanks to all for your support — we are thankful for all our loyal longtime customers and new folks who have made visiting Soons a family tradition.

Middletown, NY
We often make a trip here every weekend during apple season. The cider is delicious, the baked good rock (nothing better than a fresh, hot, cinnamon sugared cider donut with hot mulled cider on a chilly day), and the selection of apples is stellar. Love that they sell local organic beef as well. The distillery next door has a speakeasy on Saturday evenings which is an enjoyable, relaxing way to spend a few hours and is perfect for a date night. They have activities for the kids around Halloween, too. During the fall — if your timing is lucky — you’ll stop by when they have apple wood for sale. If you have never used apple tree wood in your fireplace, give it a try as the smell is incredible. Various veggies are also available during the times when they ripen (like corn, squash, tomatoes, etc.). We have yet to take part in the apple picking, but I can say that the parking area for that activity is always packed during the season. The picking area is actually completely separate from the cider mill and is located about half a mile away. It’s hard to classify a price range as it all depends on what you buy. Things are fairly priced, especially the baked goods and cider considering they are super fresh and made in house. I think the gallon of cider was $ 1.00 more than the stuff found in grocery stores that has is weeks old.
My only sore spot is the staff. It’s hit or miss whether or not you will get a smile and helpful attitude, a rude comment, or being totally ignored even when asking them something point blank to their face (which makes you want to drop your basket and leave). It’s not so much the older staff but the younger ones, and it’s regardless of how slow or busy it is. It’s frustrating to ask for help only to be ignored or told ‘wait a second’ while they openly and at a quite audible volume discuss why they dislike other employees/​working there/​their boss/​dealing with customers. Maybe this makes me sound like an old fogey, but you don’t bash customers or your employer in front of another customer. We’ve had enough good experiences to keep us coming back, but hopefully the staff hired to work during the busiest months this fall will be a bit more customer orientated.

We love coming here. We love the good for you and the not so good for you foods. The staff is awesome and friendly and helpful and will go above and beyond for you. When I have friends from out of the area come visit, I always take them to Soons and encourage them to buy one of everything to take home with them. Sure enough, it isn’t long before they want to come back and visit and load up their car with goodies. My mother in South Florida hoards donuts like the world is coming to an end.
Please Soons, don’t ever leave us.

Awesome place. Atmosphere is light and welcoming — warm and happy. Tuesday night in November: It was busy w the locals and regulars — Myself being a local, this was my first time in the market. Soon to be a regular! Love this place. It was mentioned by my friend.
Picked up almond butter, chocolate covered sunflowers seeds, cider donut that was screaming. Eat me!!!, apple cider and a home made baked dog treat. I am def gonna buy some fresh fruits/​veges, although they had a small selection, maybe its different at different times of the year?
I used my credit card but its a $ 10.00 minimum.
They also have home made goodies, cheeses, honey, maple syrup, homemade soups, the list goes on!
Theres also right next door, a wine tasting room. Small but intimate. Only $ 5 for the wine tasting. Def the best was the warm apple cider w moonshine and maple syrup.

Even though I missed the u-​pic apple orchard season. I was still able to get apples. The cider is excellent. The apple turnovers, cider donuts, apple crumb cake was so good. They even have apple salsa which I didn’t try. I got the pumpkin hummus. They also have soup, fudge, honey, maple syrup and so much more. The prices are decent. Very nice market.

I will never be returning to Soon’s due to the rude staff member that I encountered while in the Shop. I went with my family to Soon’s today to pick some pumpkins– and that went well. There was a good selection and the girl that was our cashier was very friendly and a pleasure to talk to.
My mom has been dying for apple cider donuts (that’s one of the main reasons we were going to Soon’s) so we went into the shop to get a dozen. First of all, it was a mad house– totally chaotic but this was expected and not necessarily an issue. We scoped out the donuts on a table in the middle of the store– easy enough. I’ll just put a dozen in a bag and then go to the cashier right? Nope, think again! I go up to the table and then went to reach for a bag where I was then PHYSICALLY BLOCKED by a staff member (that had looked as though he was managing the long line of customers checking out at the registers) by him putting up his elbow in my way to stop me from getting a bag. Lol what? He had his back to me as I approached the table and moved his elbow in my way and ended up slightly pushing me so I wouldn’t reach for a bag for the donuts and said «I’ll be with you shortly.» in a rude tone of voice. I was totally taken aback. I then realized that maybe he was in charge of handing out donuts too? I wasn’t sure because it was pretty crazy. I turned to my family and told them what he just did and then we decided to leave and not give Soon’s our business in regards to purchasing from the shop. If this had happened before we bought our pumpkins we wouldn’t have purchased those either.
I mean I totally understand that it gets crazy sometimes in store settings during peak seasons for specific things like apple cider donuts and pumpkins during the Fall season but maybe you should have the donuts behind a counter instead of the middle of the store and expect people not to reach for them. I wasn’t going to write a review because hey, it’s just donuts right? But I just thought it was super rude that this man wouldn’t be a bit more courteous and would go that far to push me from getting some donuts. It wasn’t like I was jumping over him.
Anyways, my family and I went to the Slate Hill Orchard which had extremely welcoming staff, it wasn’t crowded– and we got our FRESHLY MADE RIGHT IN FRONT OF US APPLE CIDER DONUTS! I would definitely recommend going the extra mile to that orchard instead of Soon’s just because of my experience today.

We really liked the Farm Market and got many yummy things there. We bought honey, cider, chicken soup, apples, honey sticks, and delicious cider donuts. We were a bit disappointed that they finished the apple picking over the weekend and didn’t keep it going for Monday, which was a holiday. Otherwise nice little place. Oh, there was someone playing guitar and singing and he was terrific!

We’ve been to a LOT u-​pick orchards over the years (Upstate NY and east end long island) and by far the best time we have had in years. The best selection of apples, minimal crowds, fresh off the vine pumpkins, fresh apple cider and fantastic cider donuts all without those added «fees» at many other places — parking, etc). So tired of large crowds and being treated like cattle for only a few apples, this was the answer to our prayers. My kids (7 and 5) have already asked to come back. (I actually thought about not leaving a review to not let our new-​found «secret» out of the bag. The only negative was the rather long wait for the hay ride to the pumpkin patch (but of course all was forgiven when we got 5 «perfect pumpkins»).

I did however enjoy their absolutely delicious cider and donuts. I’ve had a number of different apple ciders and donuts from this area and around the country. Whirl I’ve had better cider elsewhere, I haven’t in this part of New York. I haven’t hands down had better cinnamon sugar apple cider donuts. The ones here are really, really good.
What is also awesome about this place is the cider tasting. There is a half outdoors, half indoors bar shack thing right next to the main store. They make their own hard cider in house and have several different varieties in addition to a great collection of different forms of alcohol to purchase. Their cider is delicious, reasonably priced and for a $ 5 tasting, you can’t go wrong.

First things first. The u-​pic apple orchard is at a different location than the market. You can purchase apple bags, but you must have cash if you buy them at the u-​pic orchard.
The apple orchard is bigger than it looks upon first impression. Macouns were plentiful but some of the more interesting varieties were picked over or those available were higher up. You are not allowed to climb the trees, but my family created a little work around. If you are less cirque de soleil inclined then I suggest bringing your own pickers.
We managed to squeeze a boatload of apples in the small bag ($ 15). The larger size seemed troublesome to carry. We had such a great time.
There was a mild mannered polish gentleman who drove a maserati. That was awesome.
After picking we drove over to the farmer’s market. The market boasts a cider mill and tasting room. Tickets to the u-​pic pumpkin patch are ($ 2). They give you a little instruction on how to properly detach the pumpkin from its vines without breaking the stem. Upon returning to the main market area your pumpkins are weighed and priced by the pound.
The market itself is filled to the brim with every form of abundance from the farm. The tomatoes are the best I’ve ever seen at a farmer’s market. When you pick them up you can smell the tomatoes. They are heavy and ripe with sunlight.
They have a sample for everything they make. Fruit salsa, regular salsa, humus, black bean dip.
They offer donuts. And, a ridiculous bounty of old fashioned baked goods: turnovers, pies, berry scones, brownies, cookies. I bought a few jars of their preserves. The plum was tart, not too sweet. Just perfect.
We did the cider tasting ($ 5 for 6 tastes) and found all but one exquisite. I am not a big cider drinker but Soons cider has a level of almost non-​sweetness it is incredibly drinkable. You can enjoy it by the growler, the bottle, or the glass.
Inside the tasting room they also offer bottles of some of the best artisinal, local gin, vodka, etc. We sampled an incredible local gin.
We sat outside at the picnic tables and enjoyed our provisions: freshly made sandwiches from the grill. Grilled cheese with apples, bratwurst with bacon and sauerkraut, little yellow tomatoes, cider and some homemade fudge.
It was a delightful day all around.
As other reviewers mentioned the valets are a bit discombobulated. The overall vibe is chaotic. Just pretend you are at a family event and you may find it lively and charming, rather than distressful.

Ran into this farm during a motorcycle ride. The apple cider is so good. We bought many other things as well turn overs, muffins, etc and all was good. Prices are reasonable. I will be going back for that cider.

My first visit here, Soons has the normal apple cider, hay rides, apple picking and pie eating contests.
I’ve been to better, it’s pretty small and commercialized like most of these place.
The cider was tasty and everyone was grabbing the cider donuts and grabbing them. I have had better at Shop Rite. The apple pie also not very impressed. Everyone else seemed to love them but I found it was kind of on the mushy side and just not my taste.
A lot of kids working the parking area who really don’t know what they’re doing. It’s an okay place to bring little kids on an off day but as an adult I would skip.

Love this place. Even though it’s about 2 hours from Long Island, it’s totally worth the drive. The prices are reasonable, and there are tons of rows to pick apples from. After the apple picking, I suggest you go to the market-​they have so many yummy goodies! I spent about $ 50 today-​but got cookies, doughnuts, a sugar free apple pie, popcorn, fudge, and even some dog treats. They really have everything! Going up to Soons is a yearly tradition!

I came here with my family for peach picking but this place didn’t quite make it for us. The peaches were extremely fresh BUT the staff were not so friendly. Of the four staff we encountered, only one of them cared enough to bring their customers a fun enjoyable experience at the farm.
Upon getting there, we were directed to a free optional 2 – 3 minute hay ride that took us to the peach trees. Everything seemed fine until we got to the field. We were restricted to only two rows of trees but since every farm has its own rules, we respected that. It was really no big deal since there were still plenty of peaches to pick within those two rows. We were reminded by the tractor (hay ride) driver to not pull on the trees and to not, by any means, climb the trees. Again, we respected that… BUT HE HAS TO CHILL! Of the entire group of at least 2 – 3 families, he followed and watched us intensively as if we were going to damage his trees. He followed us wherever we went and constantly warned us about handling the trees with extensive care. HELLO?! We’re here to have fun, not to damage your damn trees. What pissed me off even more was when he proclaimed «These trees are worth at least a couple of thousands, so don’t damage them» in a very condescending tone of voice. I’m not quite sure if he was just plain rude or he was extremely racist, but honey, if we damage a single tree, we WILL pay for it! Quit bugging!
By the time I was done and waiting for the next hay ride to get back to the entrance, I was chatting with the only other staff at the field. I learned that there ARE people, mostly adults, who tend to pull/​climb on trees, so I suppose it would only make sense that they might be a little overly sensitive/​protective but I’m sorry, tractor driver, your way of protecting the trees really isn’t the way to go. You should learn how to be nice and polite about things from your co-​worker. Oh, and perhaps, you should learn how to not discriminate people while you’re at it too.

Today while at the Warwick Farmers market I came across this vendor. On the table were baskets of peaches for $ 10.00 I gently picked one peach up to smell it. I love the smell of fresh peaches and before spending the money on just a few peaches, i had to do a «sniff» test. It was not touching my face. No sooner than I started to sniff, a voice rang out from behind the counter, causing all customers to stop and turn. I was reprimanded in a nasty tone“dont rub the peach over your face” I was taken aback, put the peach down and scurried away, embarassed. Thankfully at the next table was a lovely woman selling pastries made from the fruit from Soons Orchard. It seems they were all together. I gave the 4 stars for the delicious confections. They were superb, especially the apple turnovers.
My advice to the rude woman is just dont speak in that tone to anyone, especially if what you are accusing is simply not being done. Learn from the woman selling the pastries how to be nice. I planned on buying quite a lot of peaches to make 20 pies for a special occassion. The sale was lost to rudeness. I purchased at another stand and they had no problem with me admiring the scent of their peaches. I guess whoever picks and packages your peaches does so with a mask and gloves.

I enjoy visiting this orchard/​farmers market a lot, and would give it four stars except I was raised in Warwick, and it’s cider, etc. cannot compare to Ochs’s Orchard. The orchard is very nice, the parking area is small, and the last time we came, people were actually getting stuck in the mud, my brother, father and I had to help a poor woman by pushing her car out of the mud! The cider is good, but not great. It is handmade right at site, so because of that one batch can turn out better than another. The cider doughnuts are by far the best thing about this place. Absolutely fantastic. My Dad says they freeze well also, not like I’ve had any leftovers to do so! The other baked goods? Meh. Jams and butters are okay, I don’t know about the fresh peanut butters they sell, but I can tell you the salt free almond butter is awful. Apples are delicious. Pumpkin picking is a lot of fun also. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

We came here last weekend for apple picking, but more so for the baked goods! We were not disappointed with either!
The apple orchard for picking is just down the road from the store. The parking is free for both. The orchard has rows and rows of apple trees. Not all are ready to be picked of course, but they label each row with type of apple and which rows are ripe & ready. Nicely organized, in my opinion.
The store is decently sized with a wide variety of yummy things to buy! The warm cider here is delicious! You could buy a cup and sit outside with some delicious baked goods or have a hot dog from their grill. Or buy a gallon of cider to take home.
As for the baked goods, the cider donuts (powdered being my personal preference over cinnamon or plain) are EXCELLENT, as is the apple pie! I brought the pie to work and people told me it was the best apple pie they’ve ever had! The apple turnover is good but nothing compared to the pie. I can’t go back to try a different pie as well!
Soons is quite a trek for me so I can’t come up from NJ often, but it’s close to Woodbury Outlet (yay shopping!) so I’m happy to make a trip of it once in a while. And I tried Hacklebarney Cider Mill closer to me in NJ this weekend, and their donuts were not as good as Soons (and more expensive at $ 8.95/doz — Soons being in the $ 6 – 7 range I believe)!

Stopped here today on our tour of the Orange County countryside. DW used to visit here as a child to get Apple Pies and she wanted to relive her youth. I can’t speak for the Orchard piece but the farm market is very nice. A great selection of local produce as well as good niche products such as locally made salsa. We picked up some apple cider donuts which were better than anything we’ve had at Dunkin Donuts as well as some homemade oatmeal raisin cookies which were excellent and also some apple turnovers. They have a large selection of home made pies in various fruit flavors.
They were running a pick u’r own peaches special today for the first time, but since I grow my own peaches we did not need to partake…
