If you want pretty good sushi on the cheap, then come on by. It’s not the best, but it’ll certainly do the job if you want to grab something fast and inexpensive. The restaurant itself is modern and clean, staff is friendly. I will say that the Salmon Mango salsa(see image I uploaded) was fantastic. I will definitely eat here again and maybe even upgrade the star rating once I’ve had more.

Good Sushi at this local restaurant. It’s fresh and tasty and does the job if you need your«fix» of Sushi. The thing that I believe that keeps us coming back to this Staten Island Japanese Restaurant is the nice large space & décor of the restaurant. It’s very relaxing & comfortable to enjoy a meal here. I must admit that their pricing on their menu is also a great selling point, it’s very reasonable. On the common everyday sushi hand rolls the prices range from $ 2.75-$ 3.50. That’s a huge bargain considering the price of sushi restaurants in Manhattan that don’t have specially priced rolls. My family and I usually order some Miso soups & Kani Salads to start our meal off. We usually order a Mango Kani & regular Kani Salad. They are both done very well here and are a nice portion size to be able to split. Then we order a variety of hand rolls like Alaskan, Boston, Californian, Philly & Ginza. To add to that we’ll also order chicken & shrimp tempura rolls. This restaurant handles them just as well as the restaurants that charge twice the price for the same thing !!! We also order some of their Teriyaki dishes which are done well over steamed cabbage with other steamed vegetables too if we’re very hungry. My children also love the Fried Ice Cream & the Chocolate Lava Cake to top them off if they left room from all the sushi rolls. I DEFINITELYWOULDRECOMMEND this restaurant.

To New Dorp residents’ dismay, Chikurin is the another dime-a-dozen sushi restaurant on the Island. I was dying for my experience here to be spectacular considering the closing of Staten Island’s sushi hero, Sushi Excellent, but it just wasn’t the case. I placed a huge order from Chikurin on a Saturday afternoon and would say a little more than half of it was edible. While the portion size for the price was great, a lot of the fish was of poor quality or cut… including a few pieces of sashimi that I found myself throwing away because it was either fishy or chewy. The spicy maki rolls were definitely their best amongst my order, and I may return if I was desperate but wouldn’t recommend if you’re looking for the best in the area(I believe Nori is a bit better). I’ll say the same thing I say for most small sized sushi restaurants in the five boroughs, if you can’t keep certain fish fresh and rotating regularly, just take them off the menu. If I had just sampled the more basic rolls from here I may have had a different impression of Chikurin but for now I’d say don’t come with the absolute highest expectations.

You can obviously buy good reviews on Unilocal, but you will never have returning customers. Looking forward to see this place close next year. Its a shame to do what this place does with food. Everything deepfried tastes like one week old oil. The place looks very nice and elegant, and menu looks nice and yummie, but you can only trick me once, wont come back here ever.

How does this place have such good reviews? Food is mediocre at best with the exception of their spicy tuna/spicy salmon rolls, which are the worst rolls I ever had anywhere(that includes Costco sushi). They always give free sake to dine in customers, I guess they need to do that so you can overlook the quality of the food. The last couple of times I ordered takeout from them they up charged like $ 4 – 5 on a $ 15 bill. When I said something the first time they apologized and adjusted the bill, they did the same thing for my next takeout order and that time the girl upfront just said, ‘we changed our prices’ I grab the menu from the bar and show her the prices and she said they changed the prices without changing them on the menu. That was enough for me to go across the street and try Oishi, which is excellent.

Staff is nice they give complimentary saki while you wait for out going order. Once they offered me food while I waited. It was salmon cracker. It was good. I wound up ordering it next time. My daughter loves the Japanese soda. They deliver as well.

Don’t be fooled by its pretty menu! The food was subpar, salty, oily, and full of msg, kind of at the level of a typical Chinese takeout. The so called«sushi» fell apart the moment my chopsticks touched them. We were not expecting anything amazing or authentic, but at least something edible. And boy was I wrong?! We left the restaurant unsatisfied, and with an unpleasant after taste in our mouth. Later on that night, all of us felt ill. Two of us ended up with diarrhea and the other throwing up! We will never go back to this place even if it is the only sushi place in the state.

Chik-urin eh? Not very appetizing to say the least. I dont know if this place paid for the good reviews or what, but I am at a loss as to how they are still in business. Came in for the first time with my wife and brother on a sunday afternoon, the place was empty with the exception of 1 table. The girl who met us didnt bother greeting, making eye contact or otherwise welcoming us in. After we sat down, she just flings a bunch of menus onto the table with a sour face and walks away. She didnt bother to ask if we would like anything to drink, and considering its summer time, we were all pretty thirsty. About 15 minutes passed as she appeared aimlessly busy in an empty restaurant, despite making eye contact with her several times, she kept ignoring us. Looking back at the sushi bar, there must have been at least 4 employees just standing there with their hands folded and looks of angry and tense communist expressions. The place felt very unpleasant, and considering the obsurd service or non-service, we got up and left. She employees finally made a sound in our direction, by saying bye bye. Wow! This place does not deserve to stay in Business another day. Perhaps its some front for something else behind the scenes, since no good business owner in their right mind would have such miserable people working for them.

Great place!!! This has been my new go-to spot for sushi on the island. The sushi boat for 2 is the way to go! The sushi here has always been fresh, and at a reasonable price. Sometimes they give you free wine refills and free saki! The colorful interior of the place is definitely cheery! Great new spot on the island.

Great place, wonderful service. Only downside is trying to park on New Dorp Lane.

Presentation of food ranged from simplistic to decoratively beautiful! The eel avocado rolls were good, however the avocado definitely overpowered the eel. You basically relied on the special sauce on the sushi to taste the eel. On a personal note, the sashimi were sliced too thick, resulting in an unpleasant, heavy mouth-feel. The first dish of sashimi that was served to us was the most delicious. I forgot the name of the dish and fish that was used, but it was served on(perhaps canned) peaches and lemon olive oil and was topped with a thick dollop of lingonberry or cranberry jam sauce. I couldn’t tell which of the berries it was but the dish could’ve totally done without it. It was definitely too much, if not unnecessary, and if I actually had another bite with the jam on it, it would’ve overpowered the fish and olive oil, and ruined the entire dish. Impressive for sushi on Staten Island. Service was a little slow despite the amount of customers there(which we 3 small families including us). But other than that, the server and his service was great.

After going a few times, my fiancé and I have decided that Chikurin is «okay». It’s not great, but it’s not bad. The service is decent. Parking is on New Dorp Lane so depending on when you go it’s fine or terrible. The sushi is good quality, but none of the flavor profiles are really developed in any of the rolls. It’s fairly inexpensive, so if you just want something simple, it’s a good choice. Personally I wouldn’t bother with the special rolls(have tried a few). They have a new lunch special which is an incredible value, but I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet. Very clean, and everything is fresh, so no need to worry about any of that. It’ll stay on my rotation for cheap, quick sushi. Oh, and they’re open pretty late, which is nice.

We were near, and we wanted to have some sushi, so we stopped by at this place. The sushi was very good, they have a reasonably large selection of rolls and the usual Japanese dishes. Some of the rolls are unusual, but very good. The wait staff was excellent, keeping our table very clean at all times. They kept our drinks topped off, and even gave us two flasks of hot sake and Japanese sodas for the kids for free! Now, your mileage may vary, but we had a very good experience.

Although we often frequent their Brooklyn locations, the two times we have ordered from this one, we had an absolutely awful experience. It only gets two stars, as a gesture of respect to Chikurin brand. 1. We usually have placed our delivery orders over the phone, but this time decided to use Seamless, since they have sent us a 15% off coupon. To our disappointment the menu on Seamless is vastly different/incomplete from their paper menu which we have at home, and lacks the majority of special rolls which we usually order. Never the less, we have decided to proceed with the order from Chikurin and opted out from switching to another sushi place from Seamless to take advantage of the coupon. The order was place over the phone. We believe that quality food and service takes precedent over 15% saving. 2. To put it into a perspective, we live 5 minutes away. After an hour of waiting for the order we have called them, to remind them that we still want the food. Finally after 1:35 minutes of waiting, it has arrived. Needless to say, that all of the hot item were delivered cold at that point. 3. We did not want to write this review. As we WERE fans of Chikurin and very much enjoyed their food at other locations. We have decided to call the manager and inquire to the cause of the breakdown in their service, and our poor experience as a result. We were told that no manager or other figure of authority is present and therefore no one is able to address our concerns. Perhaps, the absence of the manager is the very reason the service is lacking. Anyway, consider yourself warned against ordering delivery from this place!

I came here tonight on a recommendation from my sister and my friend who came here about a month ago. I have only great things to say about my experience here. My bf and I were seated immediately and were told about the specials. The waitress even opened my soda can lol saying she didn’t want me to ruin my nails. How sweet!!! I ordered Gyoza(pork) while my bf devoted his Kani salad, both were fantastic. Then came the rolls… I had the yellow tail roll, spicy tuna roll and the sheepshead bay roll(spicy tuna crunch topped with salmon and a special sauce) it was amazing!!! The sauce was sweet and slightly tart but it went so well! My bf had some special rolls wit crab which I tried and enjoyed too! The staff was very attentive and friendly, there appears to be either a male and female owner/managers who were going around and making sure every single table was taken care of. They offered free saki shots(definitely next time!) I have found my new resident sushi spot having been going to one spot for the last 6 years! I recommend everyone to come and experience a piece of awesome!!!

A newcomer on the block — and they off to a good start. Spacious, open, clean and modern — with a little bit of kitsch that most new lounges suffer from. Owner is a friendly guy, and tells you all about place if you willing to listen — I do appreciate it. Always good to know how restaurant started. Stuff is super helpful — from selections to mixing up drinks(Fun!). The only thing that annoyed me a little is for all the waiters standing in line looking at customers eating — I do understand the urge to help with customers every demand, but relax a little, guys! Menu is huge — rolls, sushi, sashimi and everything inbetween. Fresh. Make sure to ask about specials — on one of my visits they had live uni delivered that evening and it was out of this world fresh and delicious. So far I tried several rolls as well as ala carte offeringd, appetizers and specials, and all been delightful. Alcohol selection is usual for sushi place, beer & sake — one thing that sets them apart tho is that they bring complimentary sake to the table — and pretty good one I may add. Now, I do not know if it’s just special since they just opened, or they planning to do it in the future, but it is nice touch no less. Definitely worth checking out.

First time here! Heard it was good from the radio so I decided to give it a try! I’m so glad I walked in. The food are fresh, well made and delicious! Had a pitcher of red sangria and it was alright. But definitely the sushi is worth the try. Friendly staffs and services! Coming back for more!

So happy to have this place close by. Sushi is NOT exactly in short sipply on New Dorp Lane, so this place certainly has some competition. That said, considering the quality, selection, friendliness of the staff, and a clean, comfortable(and large) dining room, this place wins for me. One of the first things to turn me off of a new sushi place is when most of the sushi is cooked through or fried. So I really appreciate that there’s variety here without resorting to cooking the fish. I can’t wait to go back and try more of the menu. There are also rice-free choices for those limiting their carb intake. Prices are where you’d expect: I shared an appetizer and two rolls, plus dessert(fried cheesecake!) for $ 25(including tip), but thats also with a 10% grand opening discount. Overall, it was worth every penny. I’ll be back for sure.
