History

Established in 1925.

The Inn had been called The Holmewood inn when it first opened. however, after changing hands a number of times the Inn was renamed The Roger Sherman Inn after the Connecticut Patriot in the 1960’s. The Inn has served the Town of New Canaan for nearly 100 years as not only a fine dining restaurant, but also the town’s infamous Bed & Breakfast.

Roger Sherman was a Connecticut delegate to the Continental Congress and the only delegate to sign all four of the key documents of the Revolutionary Period: The Association, &c. in 1774, The Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation, and in 1787 The Constitution of the United States. He was also the first Mayor of New Haven and of Connecticut’s first U.S. Senators. His niece, Martha Sherman and her husband Reverend Mitchell, lived in the house from the 1780’s to the early 1800’s. The house served as the first known private day school in the town to prepare young men for Yale University.
