George Street Playhouse

The quality of the productions I see here is exceptional. The actors are outstanding, often Tony award nominees and winners. Sometimes we get to see plays that move to New York like Clever Little Lies starring Marlo Thomas or The Second Mrs. Wilson which was so good that it is bound to be moved. There is nothing like a live performance in this intimate space and the tickets are reasonably priced. There isn’t a bad seat in that theater. With so many good places to eat in town, it is a great place to go with family or friends for a night out.

Great theater in New Brunswick, n.j. Many shows Bway quality in a smaller setting. Good view from any seat. Many top notch productions. Some of which have transferred to Broadway.

I loved this play! I can see this hitting the likes of Broadway too! Funny, entertaining, and fabulous performance by Antoinette LaVecchia…
Just smashing! How she connects to the audience and makes you feel you are part of show is so much fun.

Very nice theater with many excellent productions, often with prominent performers. Good views from all seats. Very helpful staff and many discount subscription or flex pass offerings.
Excellent, very reasonably priced adult and child classes, too.
Lots of nearby parking and restaurants.

Great space, great seasons, some innovative work, world class artists in all fields of the craft, nice space for a show or private function, nice intimate performance space, good location, clean… just one of my favorite regional theaters throughout the country!

My husband and I have attended 3 plays at George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, NJ since last fall. December’s «The Nutcracker and I» with actor Peter Scolari and last spring’s «The 39 Steps» were a lot of fun. Recently we enjoyed seeing the comedian Lewis Black’s new play «One Slight Hitch» at the GSP. Our seats were about 12 feet from the fairly low level stage. It was particularly fun to see Mark Linn-​Baker perform; he had that TV sitcom Perfect Strangers from 1986 — 1993 plus he’s been in movies, TV shows, and many plays. The cast did an excellent job. It is a nice theater plus the staff and volunteers are very nice.

Went here for the first time Saturday night and will definitely be back.
There are many parking lots close to the theater. I parked right down the street for a flat rate of $ 5.
I was surprised such a small theater managed to get such talented seasoned professional actors. I saw the production of Red and sat enthralled the entire time.
I found the ushers very helpful and they made sure everyone was in the correct seat in a profession and friendly manner. It’s a very intimate setting. The seats are comfortable and I had a ton of leg room. There is literally not a bad seat in the house.
There are many great restaurants and bars within walking distance.

When you leave a show wishing you could send personalized thank you notes to each of the performers, you know you’ve just experienced something magnificent. And if «It Shoulda Been You» is any indication of the George Street Playhouse’s productions, color me unabashedly impressed.
The theater is compact, which means almost all of the seats are fabulous. But don’t let the diminutive audience fool you; the talent is stupendous. We came for the stars (Tyne Daly, Richard Kline, Edward Hibbert, Harriet Harris) and left with new favorites (Lisa Howard– WOW!) — with lots of clapping and smiling and laughing in between.
One complaint: if the ushers are going to be so painfully slow and inefficient, it would serve the theater well to open the doors earlier than 15 minutes before curtain.

Every seat I have been in has been excellent. This theater is small enough to not have to deal with huge crowds and it makes the shows much better.
The price is ridiculously cheap. I highly recommend this theater!

Not a bad seat in this intimate house. Entire auditorium is steeply raked, so even the shortest patrons (including me) enjoy perfect sight lines. Comfortable seats and good legroom. Private parking garage around the corner for $ 5.
Note to the budget-​conscious: I just visited for the first time because discounted tickets were offered on
(members only) for a very well reviewed production. At least one other members-​only outlet offered discounted tix for earlier in the run. Combined with a scrumptious meal at Sahara (see my review), a fantastic night on the town was under $ 100 for two.

We would go to GSP more often if the plays were a bit more mainstream but they do stage excellent productions. If you see a playbill that appeals to you give it a try. It is a small theater, reminds me a bit of the old Circle in the Square in NYC. Seems to me that almost every show has a Broadway name as its lead actor or actress.
New Brunswick is a great restaurant town so it would be easy to do a dinner and theater night. Beware if the State Theater next door has an important event the same evening. Parking can be a problem.

This cozy little playhouse packs a big punch for your entertainment dollar. A few weeks ago, some friends and I came up to watch Toxic Avenger the Musical here and I felt like I had underpaid.
The lobby and entrance areas are boldly decorated in striking black and red. They have a café are where you can sit and enjoy refreshments and friend’s company while you wait for the doors to open. There is also a coat check where you can leave your bulky outer garments and wet umbrellas.
The theatre itself isn’t too large, but they make excellent use of the space with stadium style seating. No matter what seat you get, you’re still getting a great view of the action taking place on stage. The seats are well cushioned for the weary derrière and there’s enough leg room to make a First Class passenger jealous.
As for the quality of the shows that run here, I’ve only seen one, but this is a professional theatre. You will see only well-​seasoned extremely talented actors and actresses grace the stage. The whole production for Toxic Avenger was wonderful, from the lighting and the music, to the actors and the script.
My friends and I had a great time and Toxic Avenger the Musical was a really, really awesome show. I hope it ends up going to Broadway, I would love to see it again. I know it sounds cheesy, but if you’ve got any kind of a sense of humor, it’ll make you laugh — A LOT. Oh, and the music score was written by the keyboardist/​founding member of Bön Jovi, so it’s more rock than Broadway cheese.
