To this day, people still mention the classic ’67 Camaro Steve Williams owned when he was just 16 years old. Born in New Bern and raised in Pamlico County, Steve was known far and wide for that car. Racing around town will tend to quickly earn a kid that kind of reputation. But while the car itself defined him to others, the story behind how he earned it is an even stronger reflection of Steve’s true personality.
You see, from the time he was 12 years old, Steve worked very hard after school and on weekends to be able to buy that car by himself at the age of 15 and a half. He credits being raised on a farm for instilling a strong work ethic in him, and at the age of 12 he began working at his uncle’s service station. Back then, there were no «work permits» or age requirements for working. Quite simply, Steve knew his parents would never be able to afford to buy him a car, so he worked for it himself.
