Although I have been publishing small softcover chapbooks for over 35 years, I was in for a real education when I decided to publish a small artist edition hardcover book. During the course of my search for a bookbinder, I discovered many places that can offer a hardcover book, but not one that understood that I wanted to create an art object without an ISBN number. Most of what was being offered on bookbinding websites looked cheap, and more emphasis seemed to be placed on marketing finished books, than on producing a quality object.
When I found the CG website, my jaw hit the floor. They were offering exactly the service I was seeking. They offered tiny miniature books, beautiful slipcases, and all manner of the sorts of bindings that make book collectors salivate. (I collect artist books, and this was top of the line stuff)
When it came time to design and format the book, all of my questions were met with patience and very helpful explanations. When I received the finished product, everybody who saw it was actually shocked at how beautiful it was. Suddenly people were fighting over the 50 copies I had printed. I have already referred high end designers to them who confer with me that this is top quality book binding.
If the prices seem a little higher than other places on the web, I’d say: you get what you pay for. The staff is friendly, courteous, and very patient with questions. Anybody seeking to have a small edition bound professionally will have a hard time finding a better place to have this done.
