While I was living in Austin TX, my cat’s narrow urethra got blocked and he needed emergency surgery to save his life. My regular vet referred me to Dr. Todd Murphy to perform a perineal urethrostomy (PU).
Murphy did a substandard job, which re-blocked due, in part, to negligent aftercare. Result: the surgery had to be performed again on an emergency basis– and PUs are harder to re-do than to do right in the first place. At least this time my regular vet was able to do it, and repair Murphy’s bad work as well as possible. Unfortunately, that means my cat was left permanently incontinent.
When I started asking around about Murphy, I found that he’d gotten a pretty bad reputation. In fact, I was told that all the other doctors on staff at the clinic he owned got together and quit. I filed a complaint with the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. There were three other complainants at the hearing, but Murphy didn’t show up– he skipped the state. The Board found against him.
Then he turned up at Blue Pearl Vet in Brentwood TN, but that didn’t last long before they found out about his past and cut him loose. But he still seems to be practicing in Tennessee and Kentucky. That’s too bad, because in my experience Dr. Todd Murphy is irresponsible, careless, and not to be trusted with the health of an animal.
