Oh crud. I guess Tayst has recently closed down, which is a mega bummer. My husband and I randomly stumbled upon this gem several years ago searching for a non-chain restaurant dinner after 9PM. We found Tayst and it’s been one of our favorite culinary discoveries. I’m a fan of the locally sourced food, Jon loves the wine pairings and we both appreciate the creativity that goes into each of the dishes. From the cute bread basket(the dish holding the hummus-y butter was a little basket made of crackers) to the dessert wine, everything was wonderful. The best part was the small town café feel. Oh rats, I really enjoyed this spot, maybe they’ll reopen sometime?

I had mixed feelings about seeing the«For Lease» sign out front. When I lived near Hillsboro Village, I was a semi-regular here, and back then, the food and service were 4.5 stars or so on most nights. I was a big fan of their local sustainable dining practices and when they became Nashville’s first Certified Green Restaurant in 2008. Then I moved, and didn’t go back for many months. Well, recently went to Tayst again, as I heard they were not to be in business much longer. Service and food were not what I had remembered and prices were higher. Instead of announcing a future close, maybe better to just surprise everyone one day with a Closed sign on the front door. The way things are reminds me of what it is like at work after some people turn in their 2 weeks notice. They are still physically«there» but the passion and extra effort are long gone. Hopefully, another restaurant will move into this location, as it is convenient and some parking available in the side lot.

So, where do i begin? I’ll start with the why. Why did i go here? Got a living social coupon for $ 20 for $ 40. My mother was in town and i heard they had great vegetarian options. What i did like: the pumpkin bisque($ 6 for a coffee cup size bowl) = delicious. What i didn’t like: everything else. Not only was the food over priced but so small for the amount of money and food described in the menu. My mother got the vegetarian entrée($ 17) and i got the steak($ 29). My mother’s dinner was very unpleasant, overly bitter in the squash/pumpkin and there were little to no other side dishes as displayed in the menu. They also did not tell my mother that there was a bourbon glaze(she doesn’t drink and we made this clear). Also when the dish came we had no idea the dark brown circular object was pumpkin/squash and asked a waitress. She looked at me and shrugged and said«i don’t know»…pause…eye contact…“oh you want me to find out? Oh OK, I’m just covering for someone tonight” And the perpetual Waiter kept asking if our meals were«dellllicciouuuusss». No. They should have offered my mother something else without that thought of us having to pay more for something else ridiculous. The steak was forgettable and slightly cold and the only thing good about the gnocchi. I left feeling hungry and upset at the travel and distance we came to this restaurant and our hope. I would not recommend it. Small food, big prices and pretension. I might go back and try the taystings(only if someone buys my dinner)

Is the food good? I will never know, because I will never go back. If I could rate less than one star I would. We were seated promptly and then promptly ignored. As in, we sat at the table, had multiple people walk by us, look at us, and keep going. After ten minutes decided to get up and leave. Pitiful.

After months of putting this review off and hoping that my opinion would change, I’m finally writing it. And my opinion has not changed at all! I don’t know if we went on an off night or what, but the service was awful and the food just mediocre. People rave about this place, but I’m not sure what they see in it. Maybe we went to different restaurants. My girlfriend and I showed up early for a dinner date with some friends. Once we were seated, someone came over and lit a candle on our table, filled our water glasses and then just walked off. I assumed it was our waited, but maybe not. Our waiter finally came around once our friends arrived, leaving us sitting at a table for 15 minutes without service. Once the waiter came over, he didn’t even introduce himself, just asked for our drink order. Well he didn’t really even ask, we just told him what we wanted, because we were afraid he would disappear for another 30 minutes. The entire night the waiter was just plane rude and unhelpful. It was really hard to look past his attitude and enjoy our meal. Between the four of us, we tried quite a few of the menu items, and I have to say I was disappointed. I really was expecting a lot for the prices next to each item. Sadly I didn’t leave happy. I know that this is a local favorite, but if our experience is any inclination on what the management will put up with, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were out of business in the near future. Sorry you left such a sour tayst in my mouth.

Great food and wine pairings! We made early reservations during restaurant week. The patio is first come and we had our dog with us. Our waitress, Jenai, provided excellent service and was very helpful with our food and wine selections. The staff was very friendly and one of the men brought the dog fresh water for her bowl. This is a very dog friendly establishment. I ordered the seasonal vegetables for my appetizer. Corn, squash, okra, and peas in a white wine sauce was delicious. They had NSW Riesling paired with the vegetables so I ordered a 2oz pour. I don’t normally drink riesling but this one was very good and went very well with this app. Chicken and waffle with watermelon for my entrée with a dry italian red wine was definitely a great choice. The spice on the chicken and in the watermelon slaw were perfect. I had the smore with dark chocolate for dessert. I enjoyed every bite of this beautifully plated deliciousness.

We went for restaurant week and that means I also lowered my expectations. However, this was ridiculous. They weren’t even full on a Friday night. The pork belly appetizer with paw paw ice had such a small piece of tough meat it was comical. The ice is good. The pâté and peach fritter was ok, nothing special. For entrees, we got the chicken and waffles & pork. They somehow messed up a table of six orders, bringing me the meatballs. I didn’t receive my entrée until 15 minutes after everyone. You would think they make it good; however the waffle was soggy and the gravy lacked flavor. The pork was a little dry and parts of the vegetables were tough. Desserts were nothing to write home about; the peach cobbler tasted more like fruit cobbler. Where was the peach flavor? Overall, a disappointing performance. There’s a difference if you could see the potential for great tasting food if service and preparation is slow. However, it’s just not there. I challenge the owners or managers to respond for the poor performance in the front and back of the house. My reviews my be harsh, but spot on. Check the rest of them, I give credit where there’s good food and service.

With the end of restaurant week rapidly nearing, I had to make the most of my limited time and went on a double date with another foodie couple to Tayst. It was a great meal! They had a good selection of food, we had a lot of different appetizers to choose from along with 5 main courses and 4 desserts for $ 30. Not bad Tayst! To start, our table had the grilled 3 meat ravioli, fish sticks with mushrooms and sauteed melon, cheese plate, and summer vegetables. All of the appetizers were excellent, but my summer vegetables really stood out. They were fresh and had an excellent white wine sauce that was to die for… it was a little bit sweet and complemented the veggies perfectly. Great start! For entrees, the meatballs with potato gnocchi and salad were the hit of the table. But again, I was partial to my pork dish. It had veggies with a pork tomato reduction. so great. It was rich(I believe it sat on a piece of pork belly) but cooked perfectly and the flavor was like a party in my mouth! The other entrée was the Tayst take on chicken and waffles. Even though I am a Southern girl, I’m not much for meat and three style cooking. I know, blasphemy. But I feel that the butter and grease takes over and there is no flavor in most meat and three type dishes. However, these chicken and waffles were off the chart. It came with roasted watermelon and the waffle was savory and made with chicken in the batter. Crazy, huh? Crazy delicious. After all that amazingness we got to try dessert and all of them were top notch. The s’more dessert was exceptional, my crème brule was different than your typical selection. It was rich and they had added a small line of raspberry sauce to give you a bit of a tartness with the sweet. Excellent! We also tried the cobbler and a vegan ice cream made with coconut milk! All of them were superb, but the table favorite was the s’mores, even though I still preferred mine :) You can’t mess with perfection! I’m giving them 4 stars because they were out of THREE of the wines that we selected for the table. Then, they were out of the trout entrée as well and we were not notified before our meal but when my friend tried to order it. It was slightly annoying, but not enough to make it a bad dinner. I also seem to remember this happening on other visits too, so work on that Tayst! Great addition to restaurant week!

My lovely wife and I had a great experience at Tayst. So let’s break it down: SERVICE — 5-Stars We had a 7:00 pm reservation, made via OpenTable. A hostess called me about 3:00 pm the day of the reservation and admitted«we’ve had some trouble with OpenTable and we’re over booked. Would you be able to come at 6:45?» Sure, no problem. I appreciate the honesty and the heads-up. No surprises. But just as we prepared to leave, my 10 year gagged on something and puked! Uh oh, can’t leave right now. I called Tayst, explained the situation, and asked it we could re-schedule. They were very understanding and offered an 8:30 pm slot. Great. Thank you. When we arrived at 8:30, they had a table ready for us. Very nice. Our server was very good. He knew the menu well, answered questions, and was ready to make some recommendations when I asked him. STARTER — 3 Stars We had a grilled ravioli starter. It was good and it was unique. Not amazing, but it’s just a starter. At least it wasn’t huge! Just a snack to whet the appetite, right? SALAD — 4 Stars They’ve got some unique stuff, and it changes, so rather than report of the specifics, I’ll just say I really liked my salad. It featured a mix of sweet and tart vegetables and fruits that I would not have combined, but it worked. ENTREE — 5 Stars Each of our entrees was excellent. This is what I expected, and I was not disappointed. DESSERT — 4 Stars Again, the menu changes frequently, but my hot cobbler and ice cream was killer.

Our evening at Tayst began with a rather disorganized and somewhat unfriendly hostess. The general lack of warmth was apparent to both my date and I. Once seated, our eyes were immediately drawn to the obvious lack of attention to dining ambiance. What little there was, in the sconces lining the outside walls, were not turned on. Three pieces of homemade abstract art were the only color in the room. Just very plain. We ordered the short rib as an appetizer, which was fatty, and slapped on a small plate with no decoration, complimenting sauces, just a rib. The salad was nice with tasteful presentation, but extremely small. There were 5 entrée options, plus 2 specials. My pork was overcooked and dry, however my date’s trout was excellent. Finally… the wine. Interesting list, avoiding the usual California mass-market selections, but if you’re going to bill yourself as a «wine bar», there should be a bit of care shown to the delivery and presentation. The Syrah we selected was delivered with cheap non-crystal stemware, and the wine was at «room» temperature, not cellar temperature(58–63 °F depending on varietal). No offer to decant. It wasn’t a first-growth Bordeaux, but when I spend $ 70 on a bottle, I expect it to be delivered properly and with a sense of celebration. Overall, disappointing presentation, service, experience, and just okay food. Not worth the $ 150 we spent.

It feels a bit redundant updating my previous review of Tayst’s bar with another 5-star review of the same, but Adrian is such a rockstar bartender that I can’t sing his praises enough. The rest of Nashville can keep The Patterson House and 308… I’m happy to have Tayst’s bar all to myself! Here you get service with both a smile and style: when Adrian’s working the bar, you know you’re going to get feel at home AND learn something. Whether it’s trying Welsh whiskey or a strange wine from British Columbia infused with chili peppers, Tayst has one of the weirdest and well-stocked bars in the city. Best of all, you won’t go broke chasing a buzz as drinks are reasonably priced(and pours are very generous!). Another great benefit to drinking at Tayst is their wonderful bar menu. There are generally 4 or 5 bites on offer that are $ 2-$ 4(though it should be noted that these are definitely small portions). The S.O.S and duck calamari are particularly delicious! If you’re looking for something more hearty, you can order off the regular menu at the bar as well. Whatever you choose, just know that both the drinks and the nibblies are top notch! Part of me wants to keep the bar at Tayst a secret because it’s not that big to begin with and getting to sit there and chat with Adrian as he mixes up some magical cocktail for you is truly one of the best drinking experiences you could wish for! The fact that I’m so ardently sharing my love for this place on Unilocal when I could keep it all to myself had better get me some serious cred!

We went to Tayst last night after trying Sloco(the chef’s other restaurant in 12 south) and loving it. I was expecting a fabulous experience, but ended up leaving a little hungry after spending $ 130 for the two of us. We started with a glass of wine and a Yazoo Sue. The waiter brought us some yummy mini corn muffins with hummus. I ordered the trout and he had the lamb. Both were good but the trout dish was about 3 – 4 oz of fish(for $ 26). I tried his lamb dish, and it was also good, with an amazing sauce and a little more reasonably sized.(It was $ 32). We also had the chocolate mousse burrito for dessert, which was good, but like another reviewer said, the shell was odd.(It was $ 7) Overall, the food was good — but for $ 130(w tax and tip and 2 beers and 1 glass of wine) I shouldn’t be leaving hungry. For much less money I’ve had better meals(with decent portions) at Red Pony and Silly Goose. In fact, I could have had 10 Sloco sandwiches for what we paid for 2 dinners! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not expecting the kind of portions you get at the big chain restaurants(give me some credit) — but what they are sending out as a dinner is more like an appetizer portion. I’ll continue to visit my favorite sandwich place by this chef, but won’t be going back to Tayst unless they have a good deal during restaurant week or they increase portions. And whatever you do, don’t get the trout, pick something more filling! :)

I have driven past Tayst several times since I first moved here. Maybe on average once a week. And each time I ask about it, I hear amazing things. Did we go to the same Tayst that people keep raving about? I certainly questioned that. We arrived early for our double date during restaurant week, and sat down with full intentions of being at least one adult beverage in by the time our friends arrived. Someone came by and lit the candle on the table and handed us water glasses, but neither introduced himself nor asked if we wanted anything else to drink while we waited. I assumed he was a bus boy or something, but when our friends arrived, he finally(after they waited several mintues with us as well) introduced himself as our waiter. Red flag. He stared at us blankly as we ordered our drinks, and let me know that the two things on the menu that I really wanted were both«out». I’m not really sure how you run out at 7pm, but okay. He was rude, never asked us how the food was(mediocre, but I’ll get to that), and blatantly ignored us for 20 minutes at a time. The food itself was pretty poor for what I was expecting. I really think I could have prepared a better meal at home for half the price, even during restaurant week. If you’re going to serve small plates like that, I expect a little more effort. The plates did not look appetizing. The spaghetti squash fritter was overly flavored to the point that my taste buds basically shut down after that. The sauce was underneath each fritter, so by the time you tasted the bottom it was soggy. So the plating was way off for my first course. My second course was the chicken. The watermelon radish foam was a pathetic pepto bismol colored mess which was overly sweet, and made absolutely no sense with the rest of the plate. The chicken itself was well cooked and decently flavored, but most of it was sliced breast, and then there was a random dark meat leg on the plate as well, which looked extremely unappetizing on the bone, covered in pink pepto. The only highlight of the meal was the dessert. I tried boyfriend’s crème brûlée and I had the apple cake/pie thing. Both were tasty, but again, nothing I couldn’t make myself. Recap: The food was overly seasoned and none of it made sense together, and the staff was unbelievably inattentive and haughty for absolutely no reason. Overall — I felt like I wasted my money, even with restaurant week’s discount.

For restaurant week, I decided to come back to the restaurant that was so good, it inspired me to start Unilocaling. Unfortunately, I came away more disappointed than the first time. But… I feel like I can’t complain too much. I mean, it was restaurant week, so they were packed. And I got SO much food for $ 30.12. Let me summarize the pros and cons of this visit: PROS: Exceptional service. They were busy, so I almost expected slow service. But not at all– we were seated right away and had two people waiting on us. Love it when the waitstaff take initiative rather than wait for someone else to take care of the table. The appetizers were delicious– chicken cheese pot pie had an amazingly flaky crust and love the cherries inside. Ox tail was also great. Desserts were semi-sweet, as advertised. Love the apple, pumpkin beignets were okay– probably wouldn’t order it again. Generally, though, flavors were spot on. CONS: The main taysts were disappointing. The lamb came out and half of my cut had the texture of meatloaf. The other half was fine, which made me think it was not on purpose. So I looked over at a neighbor’s lamb, and it was also the consistency of ground meat. Is that right? My neighbor was also not pleased and complained about his lamb. The meatballs were dry. The textures of the meats were just not good. It was a great deal. But I feel like Tayst can do better.

My experience at Tayst was odd. We had a Groupon and I think the bartender knew it before we even said anything. At first I didn’t think we were treated any differently until a couple, same age as us, sat down next to us and got very different treatment. He asked what kind of wine they were interested in, poured some glasses for them to try off the bat. He also had a waiter come over and tell them the specials. Specials? What specials? They also got a significantly larger portion of the caramelized cheese than us. I guess he thought they were going to spend more than us so I was kind of annoyed. However after our first drink he dove more into the wine and worked with us more. So maybe it was a bad day, maybe I was misinterpreting. So here’s the rundown on the food. The caramelized cheese was minuscule and yes you guessed it, melted cheese with berry compote. The scallops were amazing, really well executed with great flavor combinations. The short ribs were good but the middle was a little dry. The peach ribs had great flavor as well. The Krispie Kreme bread pudding was ridiculous. Totally out of context but worth it. I like what Tayst stands for and the idea. The menu flavor profiles are engaging. Overall, I will give Tayst another chance but it might not be for awhile.

Great place to get some local grub. The cool thing about Tayst is that is organized around multiple courses of seasonal ingredients. They really go out of the way to include items that are fresh and local. The last time I was there I had an awesome short rib starter, a fantastic bacon vinaigrette salad and braised oxtail. The oxtail was a lot of work, but sooo worth it for the rich, meaty goodness. My wife also had some spate of vegetarian options and was very pleased. Every time I have been here, they have had excellent service. Their menu always seems to have a great array of protein options as well. The downers? It can get super pricey, and fast, especially if you pair up wine. You also should really go with a full tasting menu to get the experience the chef wants you to. Also, while they have an excellent selection of wines, you may have to help them out a bit if you want a cocktail. And frankly, the Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding, a staple of their menu, is played out. Really need to change it up there. Definitely NOT a place to take your kids.

I had avoided going to Tayst for a while on the fear that it was going to be the kind of annoyingly trendy place that, as soon as you walk in the door, screams, «Oh, look at how Bohemian I am!» The kind of place boring yuppies go to just to add another story that they can loudly recall in conversation — just before they tell you about the year they spent in Prague — in the hopes that anyone in earshot will think of them as worldly and sophisticated. Well, I was mistaken, and now I feel like more of a self-important ass than the hypothetical yuppies that I just wrote so derisively about, because I actually really like this place, and not in a «let me use my dining experiences as a proxy for my superiority complex» kind of way. Aside from the large logo emblazoned on the side of the restaurant, it’s actually very understated and intimate; it’s a very classy place. The waitstaff is also very courteous and the kitchen is accommodating to some special requests and omissions, which is great for people who would like to try the tasting menu, but might not be a fan of this or that. Many of the menu items at Tayst combine foods in a way that seems very experimental, and I think they recognize that some of their customers are not as willing as others to try things like a dish that combines maple syrup and sriracha. So don’t be afraid to ask; that was the impression I got, anyway. I went with my girlfriend, and we got a few different things and kind of picked off each others’ plates to sample. I ordered the 3-course tasting menu($ 45), which was a Lamb Terrine appetizer, a halibut main course, and Crème brûlée for dessert. My girlfriend ordered the braised oxtails and Chocolate Mousse for dessert. But before that, they brought out rolls and cornbread. Here are my impressions of each of them: Cornbread and rolls with white bean dip — Cornbread was very soft and moist, almost cupcake-like in consistency. Roll was soft and savory, tasting slightly of breakfast sausage. Lamb Terrine with Lentils — The taste immediately reminded me a rich Phở broth, lightly spicy and the lentils were very delicious. Halibut with honey sauce, strawberries, and asparagus — A nice follow up to the savory, spicy appetizer, the halibut was light, sweet, and tender. The acid from the strawberries were a nice accompaniment, and I was surprised at how fresh the asparagus was that they’d used. Usually the asparagus you buy in a grocery is a little bitter, but the asparagus was so fresh that it had almost none of it, so as not to drown out the delicate flavors of the halibut. Either that, or they managed to cook all the bitterness out. Either way, I was more impressed with the asparagus than any other part of the dish for just that reason. Oxtail with almond potato cake and pea tendril — hearty and bold; reminds me of a flavorful, juicy pot roast dinner with mashed potatoes. The kind of meal you’d want to eat on a cold day in fall or winter. Crème Brulee — Very good; fresh vanilla beans and a perfect caramelized sugar crust. Chocolate mousse — A gently sweet and slightly bitter dark chocolate mousse that reminded me of a very strongly spiced Pfeffernüsse. Each bite left a pleasant tingling sensation in the back of my throat, like what you’d get from tasting fresh ginger. It goes without saying that I really enjoyed both the food and the dining experience, and will definitely be back at some point.

The fiancé and I selected Tayst as our 2 year anniversary celebration spot for dinner. Since we lived in Hillsboro Village, we have dreamed of the day where we could walk through those doors off of 21st and have a wonderfully romantic and divine culinary experience. Perhaps the anticipation and our expectations were too high. I’ll break it down for you: The Pro’s: 1) The service. From the reservation to the to-go box, Tayst has fantastic employees. We had a reservation made in advance then had to change it to 20 minutes before we arrived and Sarah, the hostess was completely accommodating(not to mention pleasant). Our server John was polite, friendly, and enthusiastic about our meal and it showed by his attention to our table. 2) The décor. Tayst is a very nice restaurant and is decorated appropriately. A cream colored curtain hung elegantly on the wall, capable of separating the dining area into two distinct spaces. Further the dining area was comforting and warm with the brown hues. 3) The wine. I loved the wine selection and the overall organization of the wine menu. It was hard to settle my decision on just one wine. The prices ranged from $ 7 – 15 a glass. 4) The menu options. Variety and inventiveness of flavors were much appreciated. The pumpkin bisque was practically sinful($ 6) and the pork cake($ 9) was also delightful. 5) The philosophy. Self renewing and focus on local food producers. The Cons. 1) The price. I realized that we were in for a beating in terms of price but reflecting on the experience I don’t think it was entirely worth what we paid. We could have easily had a steak and roasted chicken dinner somewhere else for at least 25% cheaper for just as much atmosphere and flavor. 2) The wait. Upon ordering, it felt as if it was an extended period of time before our entrées arrived.

I can’t tell you how THRILLED I was when I found that Tayst was offering a very Eco-friendly Veganstravaganza 5 course dinner with wine pairings. The affordable $ 45 per person pricetag pleased this veghead! I’ve been wanting to check out Tayst since I moved to Nashville a few years ago and now was the time. We made reservations with another couple to attend and were happy to make our way to the communal tables. The interior was certainly nice and almost cavernous. I sensed that most of the attention may have gone to operating as a «Sustainable» dining establishment instead of choosing to focus on tablecloths, interior design, and other aesthetically appealing areas. Don’t get me wrong, Tayst has a clean and organized environment… just nothing memorable. Their dedication to utilizing small local farms that grow without pesticides and fertilizers and offering up vegan options is more impressive to me than a fancy lighting arrangement. I also greatly appreciate that they minimize their waste through an internal recycling and composting system. From their«Sustainable Pledge» on their website, a focus on decreasing energy usage across the board to become carbon free is listed as a way to protect resources. Due to these steps, Tayst is certified as a Green Restaurant and have enjoyed significant press. I have to admit that I did get warm and fuzzy reading their pledge and viewing their media on their website. This has even inspired me to take more steps personally to make a difference. Okay. Fine Enough with the Oprah Aha Moments. on to the food: I can’t speak highly enough regarding the Smoked Pumpkin Bisque which was beyond delicious. Another highlight was an almond dish that consisted of toasted almonds, almond froth, pesto, and pepper sauce. I am aware that this evening featured a tasting menu but I could have noshed on a trough full of this almond goodness. The Marinated + Grilled Tofu and also the Quinoa and Pea Cakes were good but the Cashew Cheese from the Dessert Sampler has been in my every dream since that fateful night. Dead serious. How do I get my hands on a massive supply of this stuff? It was paired nicely with the Port that was chosen to accompany the dish. Not to pretend that I am a wine aficionado… but I wasn’t as impressed with 3 out of the 5 wines that were chosen for the evening. The first 2 white wine selections just seemed to have a very brassy flavor. We all loved the casual and laid back vibe to the evening and the 4 of us even buddied up with a family that were seated at our table too. A pleasant ending to our evening included a visit to our table from owner/chef Jeremy Barlow. He candidly spoke to us about the environmentally friendly vision for Tayst and welcomed feedback. He also hinted that there are always veg-friendly options available to diners but due to the success of the Veganstravaganza 5 course dinners, Tayst will likely offer up even more. Can you tell that I just may be a Tayst groupie?

The opposite of Taste… Was very interested in trying Tayst as I fully support any service provider attempting to operate in an environmentally conscientious manner. Unfortunately, we encountered yet another over-rated over-priced mediocre Nashville area restaurant. I wasn’t impressed with the menu offering typical upscale restaurant items and had a hard time finding«local» produce items. Our server, while friendly, had an air of pretentiousness to him that I found offensive. He seemed bothered when I asked him specifics on some of the ingredients in the dishes and spoke down to me as if i wasn’t hip enough to be at the restaurant. The portions were small, the food was mediocre. I was surprised by their use of processed foods on the menu(Coke glazes and Krispy Kreme desserts — wtf?) and felt like they were just using the green concept to get hipsters to frequent the restaurant. Will not recommend to others or waste my money visiting again.
