The Belcourt Theatre, Nashville’s nonprofit cinema, is currently closed for approximately 5 – 6 months for construction and preservation work on it’s 90-year-old building. Visit www.belcourt.org for details and more info.
Housed in Nashville’s only historic neighborhood theatre, the Belcourt presents the best of independent, documentary, world, and repertory cinema, while promoting visual literacy and providing opportunity for people of all ages to experience the power of film.
History
Established in 1925.
First opened as the Hillsboro Theatre and showed silent movies. In the 1930s, had the first performance of the Children’t Theatre of Nashville and was home to the Grand Olé Opry for two year. Returned to its original use as a movie house in 1966. In the late 1990s, the theatre was almost shut down for good, but grassroots campaign resulted in the formation of a nonprofit organization – and one of the organization’s founders purchased the theatre, and then sold it back to the nonprofit. Today, the Belcourt Theatre thrives in the heart of Nashville’s Hillsboro Village neighborhood.
