History

Established in 1983.

Windstar on Naples Bay would be the first Fazio course in Southwest Florida. Unlike the earlier Port Royal development, Windstar had to comply with a host of new environmental regulations.

The golf course was ready for play in 1983. Gary Owens was the first head professional. Greg Norman was signed up as Windstar’s touring pro. At his now «home course», Greg became famous for taking a 10 on Windstar’ s sixth hole after rattling around in the mangroves. When his playing partner, Ed Mooney, was asked how Norman could have scored 10 on the hole, he replied, «We gave him an eight foot putt.» After a year or so Nancy Lopez became the touring pro with a villa in Northstar. Her husband, Ray Knight, of the Mets had just been named the Most Valuable Player in the 1986 World Series. In 1987 Andy Bean was sponsored as a Windstar touring golf pro and lived at Leeward Cay.

Meet the Manager

Nancy B.

Manager

Nancy is the daughter-in-law of Julius Boros, a golfer noted for his effortless looking swing and strong record on difficult golf courses, particularly at the US Open. Boros won 18 PGA Tour events, including three major championships: the 1952 and 1963 US Opens and the 1968 PGA Championship. He defeated Ed (Porky) Oliver by four strokes at the Northwood Country Club in Dallas at the 1952 US Open for his first PGA Tour victory. In the 1963 US Open, he defeated Arnold Palmer and Kacy Cupit in a playoff. Boros was the oldest player ever to win one of the four modern major championships with his 1968 PGA Championship victory at the age of 48. His record at the US Open included seven other top five finishes, and he contended in that championship as late as 1973, when he was 53. Boros was a member of the Ryder Cup team in 1959, 1963, 1965 and 1967. He was PGA Player of Year in 1952 and 1963. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1982.
