Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa.

The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase.

History

Established in 1978.

Donald Hess combines his two passions, art and wine, in one historic location in an old stone winery dating to the 19th century. The Hess Collection is part of Hess Family Estates, which produces wines with a sense of place on four continents. As one of the world’s most notable contemporary art collectors, he has pledged to share his collection, without charge. The Hess Collection is a long-time leader in sustainability, and is certified Napa Green.

Meet the Business Owner

Donald H.

Business Owner

Born in the heart of Europe, in Bern, Switzerland and surrounded by the finest vineyards of France, Italy, Spain and Germany, Donald Hess developed an appreciation for wines that speak of their specific place.

With a passion for top winegrowing regions world wide, Donald personally developed The Hess Collection Winery in the Mayacamas Mountain Range on the slopes of Mount Veeder, Napa Valley and Bodega Colomé and Amalaya Wineries in Salta Province, Argentina. To further complement his vision of diversity and excellence in fine wines, Hess Family Estates has grown to include Peter Lehmann Wines of The Barossa, Australia, and Glen Carlou Winery in Paarl, South Africa. Sequana, whose name honors the Goddess of the River Seine, is focused on Pinot Noir from California’s most storied growing regions, as is MacPhail Family Wines. Artezin features heritage varieties from the North Coast of California, with an emphasis on classic Zinfandel and heritage varietals.
