Taste of the Himalayas

Nice vintage ambience, cosy, good service, nice food — ordered momos and had to so repeat that! Hot sauce is incredible, daal is perfect… loved the valentines experience!

Just had a delicious dinner with my significant other.
She ordered chicken tikka masala and requested mild, I got the lamb tandoori and garlic cilantro naan.
The chicken tikka masala was mild, in fact so mild that my SO asked to get it a little spicier. Instead of taking the dish back to the kitchen as so many other restaurants do, the waitress brought out a small container with the spicy version of the sauce. We started gradually mixing the spicy sauce with our mild one until we had it just right. Simply yummy.
The lamb tandoori was medium rare and very tender.
As a Valentine’s Day surprise we got Kulfi as desert on the house.
Fantastic experience and we’ll be back.

Pleasantly surprised! Sure the outside is unique and makes you wonder but when you go in, you get it. Food was delicious and the costumer service was great. I hope to return soon!

Atmosphere:
I’ll begin with the fact that it was freezing inside, it felt like we were sitting outside. Literally it was like 55 degrees inside we had to mention something and the server tells us it’s an old building so the heater doesn’t really work very well. It was so bad we had to tell the other sever then they brought out a portable heater for us but I didn’t feel like it was doing anything.
Food:
Our order came with what looked like a pubic hair cooked into our papadam, we were so disgusted we almost walked out but we were so hungry we decided to ride it out. We show the server and see just says oh and takes it away & that’s it. Really a shriveled up curly looking Pubic hair in the food and you don’t look or appear to be disturbed!!! We eat at the ToH in Berkeley often so we were hoping that we would be having a similar experience but ughhhh nope. We enjoyed the « Unilocal check in free appetizer» which is only pakora not anything else off the app menu & it’s very tiny in size. Our aloo cauli was runny & bland when we asked for everything spicy. It didn’t really taste that spicy. We have been eating Himalayan & Indian continuously for a month or so straight and this is not that. The coconut curry thing that’s closest to korma tasted like thai food!!!
Finally we get our check and the Unilocal appetizer is still on our bill & we gotta again talk to the server who is really sweet but kinda clueless on how to accommodate guests properly.
We will not be coming back and will not suggest this place to anyone. Complete waste of our time and not worth the $ 36 bill after the «discount for leaving a cooked in hair» in our food & Unilocal check in offer removed from our bill.
No stars if it was possible. Terrible place.

Average food and horrible service. I am not even considering time they take to serve as they say since everything is prepared fresh it takes time. They had just one waiter and that person spends more time in kitchen than in the dining area. She shows up like once in 5 – 10 minutes and disappears. So imagine you needed a glass of water or spoon to eat your food which they so totally forgot to give, how long you will be waiting for that. As far as food is concerned, there is nothing special or good about it. It’s just average. Naan was crispy instead of being soft.

FYI from a Vegetarian’s POV (I like Nepali Tibetian food alot).
Service can be slow but staff us very friendly and food is super yummie.
Small quaint little building… the oldest buildings in Napa built around 1809 or 1890 can’t remember anymore; reminds one of being in a cozy warm place while in Tibet or Nepal on a cold evening.

Appetizer
1) Pakora-awesome.crunchy and very well spiced and soft in the middle. 9
2) Veggie Momos-​The filling was too mushy and the sauce that came with it was too bland. 5
Entrée
1) Saag Paneer– creamy and spicy goes well with rice or Naan. 8
2) Coco Cream Curry-​crunchy veggies in a coconut milk sauce; so good 10.
3) Veggie Tandoori– basically a veggie sizzler but amazingly spiced. 10
Naan
1) Garlic Cilantro was yummie the naan was soft and not burnt (I don’t like black spots on my naan) and never got hard and chewy… it’s made onsite. 9
Daal soup comes with every entrée. it’s a nice light daal soup… I enjoyed it. 9
Also I asked for hot sauce. and our waitress (sweet Tibetan lady) got some house made pickle (omgg crunchy and spicy) and some habanero sauce. The pickles was outstanding 10.
I personally enjoy these sort of places… nothing fancy or fake here. Don’t expect to have a quick 1hr dinner and leave; good food takes time and it was worth it for me as we came with friends who also ended up enjoying the food.
Note: their bathroom is nice too… but it doesn’t have a changing table for a baby.

BEST INDIAN FOOD EVER
I could eat Indian food every day if I had my way. It’s been hard to find a consistently good Indian restaurant and now that we have been to ToH it is our go to spot.
The food is obviously made with care in small batches – this will effect your dining time and service if you eat in (they put priority on to go orders). That said, it is worth the wait. Service was friendly and they accommodated us generously for the wait. Aside from the food taking a bit longer than expected, the restaurant itself was incredibly cold (it is located in a landmark building). Whatever, that just builds up an appetite.
We had a bit of everything – lamb curry, samosas, pakora, raita, naan, hot chai, chicken tikka masala. Everything was good. Everything. The mint chutney that accompanied the samosas and pakora was out of this world, flavored with a hint of cilantro, we practically lapped it up. There wasn’t a scrap of food left on our plates once the bill came.
You know a meal is good when all conversation stops unless you’re mentioning how good it is. We left with full bellies and the next day I was wanting more. We ate in on a Friday evening for date night and by Monday I was craving it so badly I drove out from Vallejo only to find them closed!
Just writing this review has me hungry. I’ll be back, no doubt.

Truly great Indian food. Really. I got the coco curry, and it was perfect. Definitely will be coming back for the very tasty and unique food.

I have been here couple times with my friends and family. Each time we ordered different items from the menu and I must say the quality is consistently good. .Momo’s are my favorite-​very authentic Nepali food and their curries are well made. Awesome friendly Service.

Good food and quick service. I do like my hometown indian restaurant better, but this is a close second. Recommend the tikka masala. I would skip the pakoras.

Well I have been too many indian resturaunt and I always order chicken Tikka Masala cause it’s my favorite dish. Almost all the resturaunt has great sauce but usually has hard chicken. So I usually end up dipping my Nan in the sauce. Well I tried out this resturaunt which supposedly is the oldest building in Napa. Place is a little small but does have a patio. But it’s closed, the manager said it will be open in a month or so. Anyways I tried the usual chicken tikka masala. First of the sauce was great and secondly the chicken was really tender. So I ended finishing the whole dish. It felt like fine dining inside and with Nepali workers. Anyways just needs to open patio so that others can enjoy outside as well. Price was decent especially since the food was great. Enjoy guys if you go.

I can only give this place 2 stars (I barely wanted to do that) because my server was lovely and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time. Other than that, my meal was the WORST excuse for Indian inspired fare I was ever had. I ordered the Tikka Masala and when they brought it out I thought maybe it was a mistake because it was a pale green, yellowish soupy dish. WTF?!? It wasn’t creamy and spicy or even flavorful.
Also, for $ 15 a pop you’d think you’d have enough to take home for one person — wrong. There was a about 4 pieces of chicken in this «soup» and nothing for me to take for leftovers. It was bland as can be and to be honest I’m a bit pissed about it. I will NEVER come back here. If you want what you’re used with Indian inspired cuisine, look elsewhere. Trust me, it’s terrible.

This is an example of why having no competition is a bad thing. You and your local customers have nothing to compare yourself to and so you go on with life thinking you’re rocking it when in reality you’re putting out really bland food.
I knew something was wrong when they kept asking me how spicy I wanted various curries. I looked at the server like he had two heads because I can’t remember after hundreds of meals in Indian restaurants being asked that… like being asked how salty I want my meal at French Laundry. I dunno, don’t you grind your own spices to make curry and cook it for hours? Turns out they add their special Habanero sauce to spice it up. Ugh.
That sauce was noticeable and distracting in the $ 11 mismas (mixed vegetable curry). However, it did break up the otherwise bland mush of criminally-​underseasoned vegetables covered by a thin gruel of curry water. This dish was discretely pushed to my wife’s side of the table — a move I’ve perfected over the years.
The $ 16 lamb shank was a way better deal, but it did taste like it was made for an Indian hospital cafeteria. Again, very under-​seasoned (but thankfully no goofy Habanero sauce) with a thin lentil-​based sauce. In full disclosure, I did eat it all (pulled to my side simultaneous with a distracting drop of silverware!) — but that’s no indication of its quality. I’d eat a plate of crab brains if I had naan to dip it in.
The garlic naan was whatever — not good, not bad — but even meh naan is worth eating.
Tried to order a diet coke but they were «out» at 6:15pm… tried to upsell my wife a mango lassi. FU — there’s a Target right across the street… have your busboy or dish washer take 10 minutes to go buy soda.
Yeah, so, well, if you live in a remote cabin in the Ozarks, then I highly recommend the restaurant. It’s probably not as good as possum meat but at least your palate won’t be assaulted by flavor.
Otherwise, I’d bite the bullet and drive 20ish minutes south and find something infinitely better.

I’m sorry to say this restaurant has slid down hill. Most recent take out order has me feeling like I was robbed. For the $ 60 spent, I received plain taste and very small amount of food. The nann bread was the highlight! (Because that’s what took away the hunger when the food was gone) Once again I’m so disappointed!

Even though i live a short distance from a Himalayan place im always seeking out good new options. Had heard good things about this place and i drive by it often. Came in for a late dinner right before close. Shredded lamb curry, ground beef curry, prawn curry and rice. Seems to me the sauces seemed to be a bit on the watery side and medium hot wasnt hot at all. The goat was excellent but the other dishes were ok. Maybe an off the night? Service was really friendly and theyre very warm people. Guess ill have to try again and see if its better. 3.75 stars

This place was great. It looked like a ranch when we pulled up, something I am not used to and when we walked in, it kind of looked like an igloo or dungeon of some sort. We were told it was an historical place, there was a name for it but can’t remember. Either Way, it was fascinating.
It was completely empty, we were the only ones there so I was a little skept, However, we ordered our dishes, some got wine, I had water but they seemed pleased with their choice. We got many different kinds of naan for the table, all was very good. I ordered the shrimp curry in low to no spice, it was very good. Everyone else seemed please with what they got. The chef even came out and introduced himself which was very nice. Maybe they always do that or maybe because it was empty, who knows but nice touch. Would go back again if I was in the area and in the mood for Indian/​Himalayan food

The Himalayan/​Nepalese food scene in South Florida is non existent. First time i tried Nepalese food was in Toronto, Canada and after that i was always craving more.
Luckily, on a trip to Napa with some friends i was excited when they were adventurous enough to go and try it with my husband and i, who are big fans.
This place is an unassuming little old adobe house that has been re-​purposed and sits on kind of a strip mall looking neighborhood.
The place was empty when we sat down, we had reservations but could have been seated either way. It was a Tuesday so that may be why, i am not sure but i was surprised it was so empty since we had chosen this place solely on the rave reviews here on Unilocal.
In any case our server was nice and friendly and even the chef came to the table and introduced himself and chat with us for a while. He said he had worked as sous chef as French Laundry and other places, but his expertise was Nepalese food (he was from Nepal).
There were a lot of Indian dishes in the menu and not a lot of Tibetan/​Nepalese items.
However, every thing we ordered was delicious!!. We had 2 different types of nan and we each order different plates. Everyone was happy with their choice.
I had the tikka masala (chick pea) and it was delicious. The rice was fresh.
My dish was super hot even though i had ordered it medium, so if you are sensitive or do not like spicy food, this may not be the place for you.
Samosa was good as well.

Indian food in Napa?
I had my doubts. But then I saw a name I trusted when I came across Taste of the Himalayas. We decided to stop in for lunch since I never got around to trying the Berkeley location, and were far from disappointed.
I’m not sure where the accusations of this place being overpriced stem from, in all honesty. $ 14 for a lunch special that includes the entrée, daal, naan, and rice seems about average to me. Heck, maybe even a little on the cheap end.
I ordered the paneer tikka masala, which is cheese cubes cooked in a tomato based sauce that was both rich and smooth, and at the same time spicy and lively. Paired with the garlic rosemary naan it was a wicked combination, with the naan managing to be crispy but not burnt; a great setting for such a well prepared entrée, but also something I would more than happy to eat on it’s own. You know, like instead of toast?!
They also provide an interesting selection of Indian and Nepalese beers, from which I tried the Mustang Lager. I love beer with my lunch!
Setting is fun, and everything about the experience feels authentic. Service was great, prices were fair, beer was… It existed, and the good was excellent. I wish I’d tried this place earlier!
