Mystic River Bascule Bridge

Not sure what the big deal is all about. It’s a bridge that goes up when a ship needs to pass, causing a lot of traffic for pedestrians and cars.

We love this bridge!
They did a great upgrade on the bridge office. That was interesting to watch during winter. The new building is a pre-​fab built off site and brought in and loaded on.
So historic!!! Hail them on Channel 13.

I love getting the crap scared out of me at regular intervals. HORN.
It’s a fun bridge to walk over — look below, water! Left, right — boats, kayaks (don’t fall in, because HORN), water. It is old and historical and has signs to read. Take pictures, just don’t drop your phone, because HORN.
It’s also a fun bridge to drive over, mainly because it connects you to all the fun stuff Mystic has to offer. Oddly enough, i’ve never gotten stuck waiting for it to go up and down in my car or on foot. Because HORN.
Just don’t get stuck on the bridge when it is going up — technically I think this is impossible, but just in case… the HORN is important. The bridge goes up a full 90 degrees, so anything not physically attached to it is coming off.
Take a look, absorb some history, don’t spill your drink or drop your phone when the HORN comes. Because HORN.

I have a love/​hate relationship with the Mystic River Bridge & I bet I’m not alone. It’s just a bridge. Now that the construction work has concluded it’s not so bad to deal with.
When it’s up it seems like all of Mystic is at a stand still. If you’re in a car near the downtown area you have no choice but to sit & wait for it to go down. If you’re on foot you can’t cross either but you’re likely a tourist who will relish taking a few pictures of this quaint New England bridge to prove you enjoyed your time in Mystic.
I’m not sure of its schedule but I know during the warmer months it goes up almost hourly so if you can plan your escape/​arrival around it. If you’re a local or savvy you can almost find your way around dealing with it.
