History
Established in 1895.
In the winter of 1894 a Muskogee women’s group embarked on a project to create a library for Muskogee. By 1895 they had collected 100 books to be shared by community members and began loaning them.
In 1912 millionaire Andrew Carnegie funded the building of Muskogee’s 1st library building. The building opened in 1914.
In 1969 the Muskogee Public Library (MPL) joined a cooperative, multi-county library district, Eastern Oklahoma District Library Service.
58 years after opening the library building Muskogee citizens voted to match monies from a federal grant to build the current library building which opened in 1972.
The Muskogee Public Library is committed to maximizing people’s lives.
