Sub Zero Ice Cream and Yogurt

My husband and I come here often and love it, but we’ve been waiting outside the door for half an hour waiting for someone to come open the store. It clearly states on the door «open Sunday 4−8» but no one has shown up. It’s a great place but needs some more responsible employees. Very disappointing.

Love this place. So many different flavor combinations to choose from or if you’re not feeling up to it then have some tasty combinations already made up for you. Choose between milk, custard, yogurt, or even dairy free options like soy or almond milk for your base and then choose from their many lists of flavors and toppings for a truly unique ice cream.

Very nice and clean. Super friendly staff. Great flavors and add-​ons to choose from.
I went there midweek around 4pm. Not busy as expected. I had the chocolate ice cream with rainbow sprinkles and a caramel ice cream with m&ms for my daughter. Caramel was pink in color which tripped my four y old out. Haha. She loved it. The kids size is enough for her and for me. A pint to go is $ 7.50. Totally worth it for a party or to have some of this deliciousness in the fridge for later.
You can also get smoothies, shakes, frozen yoghurt and other things.
Definitely recommending this place for a non traditional ice cream parlor.
To see them make the ice cream right in front of you is a treat in its own.

Wow, I never knew that ice cream made with liquid nitrogen would be so good … Excellent!!!
Upon entering, the young lady greeted my granddaughters and I immediately and explained the ice cream-​making process (which was fascinating).
The girls tried a watermelon and lemon combo with coconut and gummy bears mixed in. It was FANTASTIC, although I could have done without the gummy bears (yes, I tried it, «taxes» my dad would say).
It’s a tad bit expensive, hence the reason for 4 stars not 5. But this is a great way to cool off on a VERY HOT Salt Lake summer day.

We came in not knowing what to expect from this establishment. The signs were a bit confusing as we were looking to get a frozen yogurt and they were reading from right to left.
The person behind the counter was very friendly and asked us if we had been in the store before. We mentioned that this was our first time as we were visiting from out of the state (Seattle). She was very helpful and genuine as it looked like she enjoyed her job (hence the 3 stars). Unfortunately, the flavors of the three (one was vanilla/​peach with mixed berries, another was vanilla with strawberries, and the other was vanilla/​mango with mangoes) were overpowering with sugar as the syrups made the frozen yogurt too sweet for our palates. I could see how many kids would like it with them blasting the concoction with the liquid nitrogen.
Great way to get the kids interested in science, but it may be best to reformulated with the mixtures. Appreciated that there were fresh fruit.
Also, they should remove the eye ball toys and the squiggly looking animal things that are attached to the cables and pipes. Some were missing (showing the sticker that once attached the eyeballs) and one of the squiggly animals looked like it was about to fall into the mixing bowl. Now that would have been entertaining to see the plastic critter get frozen.

Sloooooooooooooooooooow. There was only one person in front of us and they took 15 minutes to get us the ice cream. Really? Come on Sub-​Zero. Train your people correctly and this wouldn’t be an issue. I mean, I get it. Everyone needs to learn. But on a Saturday night maybe give your locations enough support to do their job. I’m not blaming the staff either, they were very friendly and just looked stressed.

I’ve been here several times and love the ice cream, custard, and frozen yogurt. It’s fun to see it made right in front of you. This time was special tho, Patrick, the employee helping us, was great; he recommended delicious combinations to mix in with our frozen yogurt and custard. He was very helpful, informative, and personal. I’ll definitely be back after my next softball game.

This place is so good! It’s really fun to watch them make the ice cream and it has such a smooth, creamy texture. I love all their flavor options. I do wish this location had butterfinger, which I’ve had at a different location. I also wish their brownie bits were real brownies that they bake, not the packaged brownie bits that taste more like bits of hard fudge.

Interestingly, this is an international chain, with Utah beginnings. Admittedly, I spent a lot of time looking around for Mortal Kombat stuff the first time I saw one of these and I kind of think they should find a way to tie that in, ultimately, but walking in, you see very cool décor. Interest in science will increase enjoyment with their sort of cutesy, but somewhat nice to see modifications on the Periodic Table. Staff was also really nice.
Part of what you get here is a show, so if you like to see liquid nitrogen vapor swirling around in a bowl (and who doesn’t? No kid I know), that’s a fun part of the experience. I was wondering, though, of course about the flavors and I chose what ultimately turns out to be one of the hardest flavors anywhere to hit, the piña colada. Now piña colada, as a flavor, in general, isn’t going to be right without rum and fresh juices, at minimum, but as a fake flavoring, this one did frankly pretty well, though I did sort of key the advantage by choosing custard as the base. My wife had a Amaretto/​toffee thing and complained it was too sweet, but I don’t see that as the fault of the place, given the components.
I ordered a large, which turned out to be too much, as the peaches I had chosen for it basically turned to ice cubes, which I didn’t enjoy so much but given the process, there was nothing else that could have happened there. Choosing soft add-​ons, that are susceptible to freezing, is probably not the thing to do here.
I also got my son a cookie yogurt thing, as I was curious what the textural difference would be. His froyo, while good tasting, also had the consistency of those little ice cream dots that you see here and there. They weren’t that separated, but the yogurt did seem to develop into pellets, which eventually froze into a sort of solid block in the cup.
Place was very clean, from layout to the booths and was definitely an enjoyable experience. I think the inherent application of science would also be useful to help anyone with a lean in that direction develop or perhaps kickstart what could be a lifelong love for learning. It is admittedly a bit pricey, but that’s the way these sort of unique things go. In my view, it was definitely worth it.

I have mixed feelings about you, SubZero.
Pros: Super-​friendly staffer Kayla was attentive, knowledge, and did a great job explaining how everything works.
The liquid nitrogen is pretty awesome! Watching her add the nirto to my ice cream was fun.
Cons: No fresh fruit available to add in. Adding strawberry syrup is pretty sad, when you can add fresh strawberries and have real strawberry ice cream.
Holy expensive price, batman! Small was $ 4.50, without any extras.
The ice cream base tasted a bit artificial, like there were some weird additives.
Overall, I probably wouldnt come back, unless I was trying to explain the concept of liquid nitro to someone.

I went to a place in Florida that was the same concept, but this place here is way better!
It was really good! I had yogurt with cherry and chocolate. I like that you could choose between ice cream, custard, or yogurt.
My favorite part, though (probably because I’m a Cancer and Cancerians are emotional people), is how friendly the staff was! When I walked in, there was a line of at least 5 people ahead of me, and the two guys working chatted with us while they made everyone’s order. And they seemed very genuine. Not like they were chit chatting just to seem friendly (you can tell), but they were just nice guys. Made me feel like I was an actual person there, and not just cattle in line for feed. Def will go there again.

Interesting place. The clientele are a bit strange but i love how creative this is. Delicious ice cream too. Can’t wait to try more!

Sub Zero is delicious. I believe it’s a bit cheaper than Cold Stone, and it’s a fun alternative to the run-​of-​the-​mill ice cream shop. It’s interesting to watch them freeze your creation right in front of your eyes.

Definitely my new favorite ice cream shop! You choose your base [custard, yogurt or ice cream] then flavors and mix ins or choose from the pre designed ones, then they mix and freeze it right in front of you! It was a cool experience and so very tasty. The price was a little high about $ 5 to $ 6 for a small but I will be going again if I have the money!

Sub Zero ice cream shop is pure novelty that actually tastes good. It’s sort of like a Cold-​Stone, but instead of watching the employees «fold» the ice cream, you watch them freeze it via liquid nitrogen, right before your very eyes.
The basic premise is you walk in and choose a size (be careful here, as the small is already large), and this determines the base price of your creation. Then, you choose a base of premium cream, lowfat milk, yogurt, custard, soy milk or rice milk. Add as many flavors as you like and the first mix-​in is free. You can ask them to make your treat «soft» or «extra frozen.»
By today’s ice-​creamery standards, Sub Zero is moderately to high priced, depending on how nutso you go. You have to do it at least once. The gimmick is cool (pardon the pun) and the taste is worth it. Best of all, every picky palate and dietary quirk can be satisfied in one place.
I go for a custard base with vanilla and blueberries or other mixed fruit, like peaches and strawberries. We go here often, whenever kids visit, and have always had consistent, good quality & service.

Although the employees here were among the nicest I’ve met, the ice cream was not good at all. The experience was interesting, but we will be going to BR or Cold Stone from here on out.

refrigerated section of the counter. I liked the fresh and natural ingredients. My mango strawberry frozen yogurt was very good.

I am very indecisive about how to rate this super cold treat. On the one hand it’s a very gimmicky idea– take liquid nitrogen, apply to liquid cream base, mix-​ins and add flavors and quicker than you can say «ice cold» you have a frozen treat on your hands. Also, the thing about most of their flavors is that they are just simple syrups. Non of the fruit option are actually real fruit. On the other hand, they do have a variety of liquid bases: 14%, non-​fat, yogurt, soy and custard.
Sub Zero does give you a large variety of flavor choices and mix-​in choices but maybe that’s the problem. Do you need all of these choices to enjoy their dessert? I tried to keep it simple with a 14% bases, marshmallow flavor, and almonds. It was an incredibly sweet dessert, with the «normal» nitrogen freeze (they can do a soft, normal, hard or super cold freeze). I was very happy that I got a kids size because otherwise I would have been super full.
Overall it was okay. This sub zero treat is pretty pricy, $ 3.50 for a kids cup. It’s kind of cool to checkout but I don’t think I will be making any return visits.
