History

Established in 1987.

When the Dunbar House was originally built in 1880, it was considered one of the most prominent homes in Murphys, due to the stature of Willis Dunbar. Many details in the house give clear evidence of this. The wood graining, becoming a lost art, is as fine an example as any in the state of California.

Many people have thought the main house was built in two sections, due to the different architectural styles, Italianate and New England. But the floor joists and beams in the basement show that both styles were employed at the same time. It is surmised that Willis’ New Hampshire upbringing influenced the choice of architecture.

The house also features a wonderful stacked stone basement and original stacked stone well that now efficiently provides all the irrigation needs of the beautiful Dunbar House gardens.

Meet the Business Owner

Arline and Rich T.

Business Owner

«I’m not buying any &#@% Bed and Breakfast,» were the first words that Rich uttered when Arline jumped on the bed with excitement, saying, «It’s for sale!» «The Inn is for sale!» Growing up in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains in New York, Arline always dreamed of owning a B&B on the East Coast. Thanking the previous owners for their hospitality, Arline let them know that the DH was the epitome of what a B&B should be, and that she would love to own a place just like DH, but most likely back East, preferably, Maine. Their response was, «Well, honey, it’s not Maine… but it’s for sale.»

We purchased the Dunbar House in 2004. Guests that have come back to visit us again and again, are always relieved to see that nothing has changed, and that they are still gently cared for by our wonderful staff.

Rich’s view of owning a B&B has changed considerably. We find Murphys every bit as beautiful as the Hudson Valley and the Adirondacks. We especially love the close-knit, community feeling.
