The sad fact of moving is that no matter how careful you are, something is eventually going to get damaged or broken. When we moved last summer, that’s exactly what happened. Except it wasn’t just a plate or a vase, it was a signed photograph of Mike Ditka that was one of my husband’s most prized possessions. When the glass broke in the frame, it left unsightly gashes and scrapes across the glossy photograph. He was despondent and convinced it was ruined.
I can’t tell you how many places I called before I found Tom Shesek. They all had the same answer — that they would be happy to scan the photo, retouch it and give me a copy. Well, that might work on some old torn picture of your grandmother, but it doesn’t work when the entire value of the picture is in the original signature. Tom, however, knew exactly what I needed. He explained that his work was a dying art, that most people preferred to do the «photoshop fix» anymore, but he could repair the actual photograph for me.
He is located in Munster, but travels to Chicago on a regular basis. I met him in the city and gave it to him. It took about 2 weeks for the repair and since we were traveling to Indiana anyway to visit a friend, we were able to sidestep the wait for him to return to the city and just pick it up from him.
The results were amazing. The only thing I could see was the repair on the very largest gash, but he had done it in such a way that it looked like a part of the photo, and if you weren’t looking for it you would never know it was a repair. Everything else, the scrapes, the scratches, gone — pretty unbelievable for a glossy photograph.
