Specialties

Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort operates on a special use permit on the Mt. Hood National Forest, offering some of the most spectacular skiing and snowboarding in the Northwest. The resort is close to Portland — just 90 minutes away — but delivers a big mountain experience you’d expect to travel much farther to enjoy. The resort sprawls across Mt. Hood’s southeast flank, the sunny, wind-protected side of Mt. Hood. Meadows’ playful terrain welcomes and challenges all levels of skiers and snowboarders.

History

Established in 1967.

In 1966 a U.S. Forest Service prospectus for a ski area on the southeast face of Mt. Hood caught the eye of local businessman Franklin G. Drake. Several trips to the proposed permit area perked Drake’s imagination. The variety of the terrain, the beauty of the alpine meadows providing natural open spaces to the tall stands of timber, and the wide open untimbered spaces above tree line, provided a near perfect landscape for downhill recreation.

From opening day winter enthusiasts enjoyed the undulating, interesting and challenging aspects of Meadows’ terrain. From the steep front side bowls to the gentle slopes of the beginner runs, Mt. Hood Meadows terrain is known for its diversity and playfulness. Growing from 2 lifts to today’s 11 (including 6 high speed quads) providing uplift to 2,777 vertical feet on the resort’s expansive 2150 acres.

It’s a big mountain with a lot of character — and a staff that happily serves those in pursuit of Mt. Hood’s natural beauty and adventure.
