History

Established in 1970.

Kwik Key Lock & Safe Co. opened its doors in Palo Alto 1970. Started by Joe S, a retired police officer. The first two employees were teenaged brothers: Alan and Gary. Both of them are still with the company: Alan as owner, Gary as the longest standing employee.

After studying business finance in college, Alan returned to the area and bought Kwik Key Lock & Safe in 1982. The company continued to flourish and was incorporated in 1985. Combining his college background with 30 years of actual locksmithing Alan has built a reputation for professionalism and skilled service.

Integrity, reliability, great service and competitive prices are the way we do business. Add to that a handful of nice guys who really know locksmithing and you have our formula for success. We now have 5 service vans. Maybe you have seen them; light blue with the distinctive logo of ‘Super Key’ man in the red and blue suit.

As a young man Alan worked at Kwik Key Lock & Safe, learning the locksmith trade in his teens. Alan attended Brigham Young University, majoring in Business Finance.

After college Alan and his wife, Patti, returned to the area and bought Kwik Key Lock & Safe in 1982. Combining his college background with actual locksmithing experience Alan has built a reputation for professionalism and skilled service.

Alan & his wife Patti are the parents of 5 children and 3 grandchildren. His hobbies include community service, scouting and family.

Outstanding customer service… BANG that easy!
Dropped by to have a key for my car made, the flip out kind of key with the snaking cut.
The gentleman behind the counter explained that this type of key cutting service is charged regardless of results as the key cutting machine charges them per use. After numerous attempts to get the machine to recognize my key it became clear that it wasn’t going to work.
No charge and a promise to call me if the issue was resolved. OK so no new key but excellent and personal service will bring me back again and again.

They were quick, I will grant them that. Took them about a minute to make four keys. However, the quality is low. I had a key they made get stuck in the lock for about five minutes. It was just completely jammed. Tried again with the original key (once i got it out) and it worked perfectly. They do rough cuts and it shows in the quality. I now have to go to another store and get the keys recut. I don’t want to be in that position again.

Two star off for the owner who has a bit of an attitude and doesn’t answer questions politely. Another customer was there with a issue of a copy of the key they made and he was not courteous with her either. His workers are all good but the owner is crabby.

Used their service to duplicate car key. Provided my own programmed blank. They asked for payment first which wasn’t a problem. Proprietor cut the key, tossed it on the counter and gave me a dirty look. Don’t expect courteous service if you’re resourceful, manage to buy a blank key from an online source and program it yourself.

Gary saved the day! I had some deadbolts that I needed to be re-​keyed. Other companies told me $ 70 travel fee plus $ 15 – 20 per barrel and they didn’t have anything available until next week.
I called Kwik Key. I was told $ 85 to re-​key both deadbolts and no travel fee. AND Gary was there within 30 minutes.

Stupidity tax is probably proportional to the amount of carelessness and absent-​mindedness involved with the deed. One could say its human nature to reflect on such an instance with a negative framework, but recent research on cultural variations in human psychology would suggest it’s my western mindset slanting toward this tendency. Philosophizing aside, I managed to lock myself out of my place. (Since this has never happened before, a catastrophic differential diagnosis is currently being formed.) After calling four local locksmiths, Allen at Kwik Key Lock was friendly and offered a reasonable rate of $ 82. Making an appointment was equally easy. The technician arrived exactly on time. He never told me his name and was initially not super friendly, but managed to slightly warm up to my hokey sense of humor during the 40 minute visit.
He couldn’t pick my lock which is probably a good sign that potential thieves couldn’t either. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt until I befriend/​fall in love with someone adept at breaking and entering who shows me how easy it is to pick locks. My lock had to be drilled which resulted in a fee of $ 156 (including tax) for a new key, drilling and replacement of the lock.
I recommend not locking yourself out of your house, but, if you do, Kwik Key Lock is the business I recommend for a reliable and relatively pain free fix for your blunder.

Hard-​to-​find keys for the obscure filing cabinet…
I bought some pre-​owned locking filing cabinets, but missing the keys. Hardware stores were no help. I called Kwik Key with the brand name and lock code and bingo! Problem solved…

I locked myself out of my apartment in just sweats and flip flops in the rain (don’t ask). I used a neighbor’s phone to call Kwik Key. The man who answered the phone was so pleasant and reassuring. He said they could be at my apartment in 25 minutes, that it would cost $ 79 to open up the door, and I could pay with a credit card. I’ve since found out that this is pretty reasonable, and other neighbors of mine have been charged much more from other locksmiths.
Long story short, my apartment manager was able to come unlock the door for me, so I called Kwik Key to cancel. They were very nice when I had to cancel. So even though I didn’t actually use their services, I’ll definitely call them again the next time I lock myself out.

Don’t come here much (how often does a normal person really need to get a key copied?), but have always been completely satisfied with the service, speed, & price. And what’s more. the keys actually work! I’ve completely given up having keys copied at the hardware store or anywhere else (what was I thinking anyway?). I’ve also found that they carry a lot of lock/​security/​miscellaneous things that other stores would have to special order in and would charge way more.
The shop is nothing fancy, but that probably helps in keeping their costs down, so I’m not complaining.

Had a great experience with Kwik Key re-​keying my door! They weren’t quite the cheapest estimate (the least expensive had uniformly horrible Unilocal!reviews… and I learned a lesson from my experience with New Planet Moving), but they got here when they said they would, the locksmith was friendly and gave great advice, took careful care even with something as superficial as aesthetics, and did what he could to save me money. Exactly how every business should ideally be run.

Great service and quick for having keys made… I was in and out in less then 5 minutes having 3 keys made.
I just hate it when someone is helping you at a counter and talking out loud to another employee behind them in a back room while facing you. I don’t think it’s too much to ask of someone to wait until the customer is not at the register to engage in a full on LOUD conversation in front of my face.
But either way… I’ll be back to have keys made.

My husband and I had been running around from one hardware store to another in search of a replacement mailbox lock. After what seemed like weeks of running into nothing but dead ends, we were sent to Kwik Key.
I walked into the store, ready to do battle. I looked around, not sure where I would find a mailbox lock.
«Can I help you?» said the man behind the register.
«I need a replacement mailbox lock like this,» said I.
«Just one?» said he.
«Yup,» said I.
«Here you go! That will be $ 10,» said he.
WAHOOO!!! Fast, easy, good service (not to mention a good selection, obviously). Thank you, thank you, thank you, Kwik Key!
