History

Established in 1987.

The market for oil remained confined to lighting and lubricants until, in 1886, the internal combustion engine and demand for gasoline arrived with Karl Benz and the first Mercedes. By now the Samuel business had passed to Marcus Samuel junior and his brother Sam. They exported British machinery, textiles and tools to newly industrialising Japan and the Far East and on return imported rice, silk, china and copperware to the Middle East and Europe. In London, they traded in commodities such as sugar, flour and wheat worldwide.

It was during a trip to Japan that Marcus became interested in the oil exporting business then based in Baku, Russia. The Rothschilds had invested heavily in the 1880s in rail and tunnels to overcome the transport difficulties of getting oil from this landlocked base to the Black Sea and from there to overseas markets. Shipping still posed a problem as the oil was carried in barrels, which could leak and took up much space in the ship’s hold.

Gas price 50 cents more than Shell on El Camino and Shorline. There is a 15% difference in price. Seriously this is a rip off. Just warning people. If they rip you off by 50 cents a gallon, can you trust them on the car repair bill?
Today at the El Camino/​Shoreline Shell, 91 octane is about $ 2.80, at this place $ 3.30 why?

This was the nearest service station when my battery light came on. They took a quick look and told me my alternator was dead. They offered to replace it at what sounded like a reasonable price, and it would be ready in the morning.
They were definitely pushy about adding on other services, like an oil change, a new battery, etc. I resisted the oil change, having just gotten one not long before, but did agree to some other things (one which was necessary anyway, the other I realized later I should have skipped). They were nice enough to call me a cab though, and off I went.
I was a bit nervous when I saw the reviews here, and I imagined my car would have more issues or burst into flames as I drove it home. However, my car was ready on time the next morning, and it seemed to be working just fine. They charged me only the agreed-​upon price, as was documented beforehand.
The only downside was that they reset my stereo, so the anti-​theft thing disabled the radio. I ended up having to take it to the dealership the next day to get it reset, and also had them inspect the repair job. They said it looked fine for now.
So, not a perfect experience, but better than some of the other reviews. I just hope the alternator lasts through the 1 year warranty.

This is the second time that I used this repair shop and they fixed my car problem, when the Toyota dealership couldn’t do it.
I’m very pleased with the results and can recommend them highly!

These guys are complete thieves. DO NOT GO HERE FOR ANY AUTO REPAIR. They over charge you, give you faulty estimates and the owner will call you and try to sell you services and repairs you don’t need. Complete BS. My friend told me that these guys were thieves. I didn’t listen and now I know for sure they are thieves. They are so obviously over charging that when I asked one of the mechanics, he just laughed and pointed at the owner’s office.
The repairs done on my car were horrible. The owner upsold me on some BS. Instead of a $ 400 repair (I had paid for a similar repair elsewhere), I was charged $ 900 because of some upselling the owner did. He never told me the price of such upselling till I went in to pick up my car. I drove the car 50 miles and it had the same problem — again! Great work — NOT

Will not go here again. Tried them because of the Valpak coupon. They changed a few dollars over the written estimate I already signed off on, citing additional recycling charges over the ones they already quoted. I questioned the technician about it but he claimed the boss had already told me about those fees. (wrong, and they were not in the written estimate)
They also left a very noticeable black smudge on my door’s upholstery. That’s going to cost me more than $ 20 to get removed!
Only gave 2 stars and not 1 because the oil change was fast. I guess because they have few customers…

I used these guys once. They did not give me an estimate on paper (a violation of state law). At the end of the repair, they tried to charge me some exorbitant amount — which I’d never approved.
Never, never, never, ever patronize such an unethical business.

I have been taking my car here for years and they are able to work on BMW’s, which was a big selling point for me. That doesn’t go to say that they aren’t able to work on other cars, because they can. The staff is friendly and helpful even when they are swamped. Honest and hard working team that works here.

These guys, especially Mr. Vipan Gupta, are all a bunch of thieves and should not be allowed to stay in business. I took my car here for several oil changes and service tune-​ups. I stopped going to them because they stripped the plug on my oil pan, and then repeatedly lied about it (see William’s Unilocal review below). However, an update to that is that they had done my 100K service, in which they listed that they replaced my spark plugs, timing belt, etc. All the things you’re supposed to do at 100K…
Well, my current mechanic (who is extremely trustworthy and awesome — M&G Auto Repair in Belmont) was doing a 140K mile service, and he found the original VW factory spark plugs in my car???
So these thieves never changed them, but said they did, and certainly charged me for them. Wonder what else they lied about. Seriously, people, don’t be fooled by the cheap coupons. The reason they constantly advertise in Valpak is because they screw over ALL their customers and can’t keep anyone around.
I hope they all rot.

Lured by cheap oil change coupon. The Indian owner was very pushy to sell fluid topping, battery change, etc. I made the mistake of getting other problems fixed, like replacing the turn light relay. When I picked it up, there was an electrical noise when I tried to signal right turn. Owner insisted that noise was there before and it was mechanical. After I showed my extreme displeasure, he agreed to fix it without labor, but then he charged $ 80 for a piece of relay (which later I found is is twice the market price).
I came in for $ 20 oil change, ended up spending $ 400.
As an immigrant American I am very disappointed with these thieves who give a bad name to immigrants and my friends from India.
Avoid at all costs. I won’t even buy gas there anymore.

They told me that my car’s engine needed to be flushed and cleaned when I took my car there for an oil changed. Later, I found out from 20⁄20 that that is how they cheat you money. Sucks.

Awful, awful cheaters! They seem very nice but when you bring your car there, they will do things to it you never asked, charge you and arm and a leg for it and forget about asking for your money back! My husband took my car in for an oil change (we thought we’d give them a second try after a bit of disappointment the first time we took the car in for tire repair) and they fleeced us! We didn’t ask them to make any repairs and they went ahead and did it; then topped off fluids and charged for it — we hadn’t asked for that and the charge if any should have been minimal. We will never go back.

Tried to upsell me on various fluids and car care plans that I don’t need. Seriously, my brake fluid was FULL already.

Honestly, this place seemed kinda shady. They kept trying to upsell me on things that I didn’t need when I merely brought my car in for a smog check based upon a coupon I found. While they do it with a smile on their face, their insistence and pushiness was quite unbecoming. The interesting thing is that they didn’t even do the check on-​site, they brought it over to another place to get it done and made me wait an hour. They said I could wait in their tiny little office and offered me coffee, but I opted to walk over to Nob Hill to avoid any more attempts at upselling me on service that I didn’t need. Definitely not going back.

Lack of respect for the customer. So today I pull into the Grant Road Shell station with my 2 yr old daughter in my wife’s car to get some air in the tires. This is the same station that several days earlier I spent over $ 70 for a Smog Check for my car. The same attendant starts lecturing me on how he can only turn on the air if I buy gasoline — but I have a full tank of gas already. I tell him that I was there for a smog check several days earlier and he continues to lecture me dismissively and finally reluctantly turns on the air. I really thought he was going to turn me away. I will be driving past this station in the future.

My experience was pretty similar to the last reviewer’s: lured in by a coupon for an oil change, then scammed.
The owner (a Mr. Vipan Gupta) tried to pull the top-​off-​fluids-​then-​double-​the-​price trick on me – and when I protested, he tried playing the guilt trip card and scolded with «you’re the first person who’s ever complained.» But the part that’s dishonest to the point of being laughable was his decision to STEAL A PAIR OF GLOVES that was sitting in the back seat.
I mean dude… a Rolex, certainly. A laptop — heck, what self-​respecting thief wouldn’t? But exactly how cheap of a bastard do you have to be to steal a pre-​worn $ 10 piece of apparel?

Thanks Grant Road Shell for fixing my flat yesterday, and in under 10 minutes. I would’ve been up the pervebial creek without a paddle if I didn’t get the flat fixed before the weekend.
But, what’s with that price? I came to you guys last year to get a flat fixed, it only costed $ 10.00 then. And now you raised the cost of fixing a flat by 250%? I understand the high gas prices, it’s one of the first warm weekends and you guys want to make some fast money off us gas guzzling, daily drivers. But, the cost of rubber hasn’t gone up, atleast not 250%.
Yeah, yeah… I know. I’m complaining over an extra $ 15.00. I’m being cheap; but, if I get another flat (and I hope I don’t), I’m not letting you guys fix it.

Our new rule about finding mechanics is that they must speak fluent english. I have no problem with those who do not, but when someone says «we won’t charge you for the diagnostic.» To me that means I wont be charged for the diagnostic. To them it meant, we will fix your problem and 10 other things that weren’t broken and then charge you an arm and a leg. After that we’ll pretend that we don’t speak english and my uncle will call you to discuss the charges. Which never happens.
I have given up on the fight with these guys, but I have to think about it every time I drive by that place! :(

This gas station is tricky. The price for regular is lower than most on the bay area but the premium is much more expensive. I think because all the people who drive into Los Altos (and generally only get 91 octane) use this, they make it so regular catches your eye then, they sodomize you when you get premium. So crafty.
However they have smog check station and general automotive mechanics, with a couple of nice guys that work there so they get an extra star for that.
