Specialties
For over 68 years and throughout 3 generations our family has hand-cleaned and repaired Oriental rugs. Although our method may seem old-fashioned, the hand-cleaning process, while labor intensive, is by far the most effective and least corrosive to your rugs. We know that these rugs become a part of the family as they are passed down from generation to generation. In order for them to last for generations to come they must be handled properly by professionals. Individualized attention allows us to offer levels of service consistent with the needs of the rug and our customers. Every rug is unique. Every need is different. Trust in McGrew’s for all your cleaning needs. Our mission is to see to it that your treasures are cleaned and maintained to ensure they provide warmth, beauty and longevity — as they gain value over time.
History
Established in 1945.
Our history began when «Grandpa» McGrew drove to Florida in 1944 for an exam to become a professional barber. He was a day early and being ambitious and a bit impatient he drove back to Charleston and started a job at Copleston’s Rug Cleaning downtown. He worked days, nights, and weekends and upon customers requests had saved enough money in one year to start McGrew’s Carpet Cleaning and Sales. In no time at all the property at 1346 Chuck Dawley Boulevard was erected into the shop that still stands today. We are still offering a tried and true carpet and rug cleaning service throughout the second and now third generation of the family. Throughout time nothing much has changed with our in-plant rug washing. What worked best in 1945 still to this day is something not found elsewhere: hard work and determination. Complete with zero shortcuts and warm friendly customer service. Place your confidence in Charleston’s oldest rug and carpet cleaners and you will not be disappointed.
Meet the Business Owner
Luke M.
Business Owner
Luke McGrew is the grandson of «Grandpa» Herman McGrew, founder of McGrews Carpet Cleaning in 1945. Luke is the 3rd Generation of the family business and officially took over full operations of the company in spring of 2012. The company name changed a bit that spring to include «3rd Generation» in the title. Vans were upgraded, newer more powerful machines were purchased, and the shop had a deep scrubbing… but one thing stayed the same: he still offers only the best in customer service and hard work with determination in everything he sets out to accomplish. There’s no job too small such as repairing a ripped fringe on a rug and no job too large such as being entrusted with Boone Hall’s 75 year old Oriental rugs which number over 30. Great pride was instilled in Luke McGrew as he mentored his father through his childhood and continues to keep the family legacy alive with each phone call and every rug drop off. Trust in the 3rd generation as your parents and grandparents have.
