Much research has been done in the last thirty years with regard to enhancing the success of marriage. As David Schnarch said in his book Passionate Marriage, marriage can be sort of like an hourglass. In the first stage, the honeymoon stage, couples fall in love and life together feels blissful. In the second stage or the «narrows», the relationship enters a more challenging phase which is similar to a power struggle. This is the time in which couples often seek counseling. I coach couples through this stage by helping them be more realistic in their expectations of each other. The relationship can then operate more as a team, not as opposing parties.

I enjoy working with couples who want to improve their relationships. As your marital counselor, it is my goal to:

1. Create a safe environment so both of you can communicate more effectively, especially with the tough conversations involving anger and conflict.

2. Provide insights into each of your family of origins to make sure that old scripts are not subconsciously being played out in your adult relationships.

3. Improve your friendship so you can support each other’s hope and dreams.

4. Encourage you to design a vision of the relationship that both of you want and coach you in achieving that vision.

Meet the Business Owner

Louisa S.

Business Owner

I knew the exact moment when I was ready to begin a career in helping people. I had a friend named Kaye Sharpe who was a founding member of the S.C. Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. She kept a sign in her office which said «Alterations». A woman had rang her doorbell once looking for someone to «alter» her clothes only to find out she specialized in different types of «alterations». She was in the business of helping people alter or modify their relationships. For many years, I was lucky enough to have her as was my teacher. Many of the people who come see me in counseling want to make changes or alterations but change can feel daunting or scary. My approach is to listen as people talk about what is not working in their lives, help them to imagine how they want things to be instead and coach them in making these changes that they want. I continue to enjoy helping adult individuals and couples.
