Fish Bonez

Our waitress was amazing! The menu was diverse (for the embarcadero, anyways, most menus there are pretty similar) and the food was really, really good. The fig, cheese and date appetizer was rich and flavorful, our entrees were fantastic. Reasonable prices, good food perfectly prepared. The views from the upper level where the restaurant is located were lovely, of course, and super sad to read of its closing!

This place was on the pricey side but I don’t see any issue with spending a little extra when on vacation. This place was also more upscale than we initially thought; we were still a little sandy and wet from the beach so we felt under dressed. However, the food was good and the service was great (there were only two other tables at the time).
I had the salmon primavera which came with a dinner salad and both were tasty. I don’t remember what my boyfriend had but he ate it all.
Will return one day!

Absolutely wonderful restaurant. I came here early and grabbed a table in perfect view Morro Rock. We had a cheerful server and top-​notch service.
This is definitely a date spot; so, bring someone special.
I ordered a lot of seafood; lobster tail, crab legs, and shrimp. Everything was cooked perfectly with clarified butter on the side for taste.
Really wish I saved some space for their cheesecake :(

Fish Bonez was a great surprise in Morro Bay! They have created amazing classic yet innovative seafood dishes making the most of the available fresh ingredients. The environment is welcoming and the service very attentive. We enjoyed the Fresh and Rockefeller Oysters and a great Seafood Platter. Our favourite dishes where the Shrimps and Scallop tower and the Lobster Lollipop: one of the best ways we tasted lobster, ever!
We are Italians from the Adriatic and are very demanding with the seafood; we loved it here and would return whenever possible to Fish Bonez.

It was everything my husband and I were looking for: beautiful restaurant & great food!

Reasonably busy on a sat night but we got a window seat right when we arrived. It was already dark so no view. Other than what was in our imagination.
Menu had some good looking options. Neither one of us can usually eat a full plate so we usually share. The menu says $ 5 extra for sharing a plate?! Wtf.
Artichoke with crab appetizer. Sure sounded good. Right?! Wrong. Flavor was bland. No crab meat that I could tell.
Pasta primavera with salmon also sounded good. It was very greasy. My arteries choked up just looking at it. We could not finish the plate.
Service was good and friendly.
Will try some place else next time

This is one of the rare places where I felt that Unilocal kind of underrated a place.
It is smack dang in the middle of the Waikiki-​like dystopia of the Morro Bay Waterfront Tourist Mecca…
despite this… you go up the stairs & you are presented with a very nice Oasis int the epicenter of Tourist rip offs.
Their prices run about what you expect, but the food has a creative & tasty flare.
My wife loved there Pasta, White sauce with Cheese, & mixed Veges. It was a huge portion & easily made for two meals (e.g doggy bag time).
Her fav was the two Cannoli’s that we had for desert. They can freshly piped into the Shell, and they provided two dishes for dipping…
One filled with yummy melted milk chocolate, and the other filled with semi-​sweet chocolate chips.
It was so fun to dip, double dip, triple dip, & so on… while we watched the boats, the rock, and the people.
Our waiter was fantastic & they were willing to modify things on the menu to our preference.
He also suggested to me to have the microbrewery beer sampler to try out several beers. They were all super-​aromatic, tasty, light, & hopsy Pilsner-​type local beers fresh from the tap. It made for great sipping & a fantastic alternative to my the usual glass of wine. They did have my fav frugal local wine called Fossil Point. Fossil Point Pinot Noir is made by one of the local Edna Valley/​Arroyo Grande Vineyards, but «hide» the real producer so as not to undercut their pricer Vintage labels. You can find it by the glass for about $ 12 in some local restaurants. Finding the bottles which can go for $ 16 is a challenge for some reason & I had to try several stores in the Arroyo Grande area for it.
The Seafood Soup I had was tasty & clearly homemade. The mixed seafood seemed a bit «lost» among the many sliced mini-​red potatoes, but it was still a nice bowl of soup. I would suggest that they add some clams to it to add some more dimension to it.
The rather interesting take on fried Oysters was quite tasty & had a flaky puffy panko coating, but they still contained too much oil for my delicate system.
The Filet Mignon was a large tasty cut, and along with the well arranged layers of asparagus & mashed potatoes, made for a beautiful presentation… but the balsamic/​wine? reduction sauce was too overpowering… and I had to avoid it.
They need to tone down the sauce some for my taste.
One kind of strange thing was that they did not serve any «table» bread, which is kind of strange in a fine dinning place… but ultimately we had more than enough carbs with all the food.
On the other hand, the nice calm interior with the colorful sea life (e.g. giant jellyfish), along with the view, made for a great seaside atmosphere.
Anyway, even though I was not too thrilled with all my choices, my wife absolutely loved hers… and with the stellar view… it suddenly became her «favorite» place to go in the future.
I think I will go vegetarian like her next time & get two decadent orders of Cannoli’s…

We hosted an event on the patio and were pleased by every element of the afternoon. Everything from the friendly management to the delicious appetizers, such as the Brie, was impressive.
The modern décor alongside the clean windows, showcase the beautiful bay, setting it a part from the normalcy of Embarcadero businesses.

This place is just average. The décor and place settings really make for a cheesy atmosphere (see pic of fish shaped flatware). The server was attentive and knowledgable of wines and specials. Bread for the table cost $ 4 dollars and was a skimpy serving. I had linguine and clams which was okay other than the clump of linguine that had not been stirred enough. Overall I would try something different next time I’m in Morro Bay.

Great view, lovely ambiance, and polite though not too outgoing staff. Food was so-​so. They have some unique dishes (beer Mac & cheese, crb stuffed chili Relleno), but no outstanding flavors. We picked the restaurant for a special occasion, but were just totally disappointed with everything we ordered.

By Morro Bay standards, Fish Bonez is actually 5 stars.
We were looking for dinner at a restaurant that was nicer than a fish and chips place but with entrée options under $ 20. Fish Bonez fit the bill.
Turns out to be an excellent choice. Fish Bonez serves mostly local seafood. Our group enjoyed the local sea bass with miso-​mustard sauce on coconut milk rice (delicious sauce, very light on the mustard flavor), the local scallops (big, not the bay type), and the clam linguine. Compared to, say, San Francisco seafood restaurant standards, the food was good not great. But in Morro Bay, this place is a gem.
Service was first rate. Wine selection is very small but entirely local and reasonably priced. We had a bottle of Fossil Point pinot noir that greatly exceeded our expectations – so much that we are trying to find out where we can buy more.
Several people in our group had the chocolate mousse parfait – can’t go wrong with that if you love chocolate. Smooth mousse with cookie crumbs and whipped cream. Enough to share, unless you’re with a teenager like we were… We also tried the «banana fritters». We expected a donut-​like item with banana flavor. Actually it is chunks of banana bread, deep fried. Served with chocolate sauce and banana slices.
View of the eponymous Morro Rock. Outdoor seating available. Good for groups. Restaurant has been open less than a year. They deserve to do well.

This is a great restaurant in Moro Bay!
My wife and I were on a birthday trip along the coast. For dinner in Moro Bay we naturally turned to Unilocal for some advice. We liked what we read about Fish Bonez and promptly made a reservation and were very happy that we did!
Dinner was fantastic!
We started with the Garlic Cheese Bread ($ 4.00), which was a tasty way to start the evening. Great garlic bread.
Then we shared a plate of the Roasted Dates appetizer. This was the best appetizer that we ever experienced! These were dates stuffed with goat cheese, then wrapped in prosciutto, and then roasted. They were topped with a little honey and served on small toasted pieces of bread. The taste was unlike anything that we ever had; it was magnificently delicious! This appetizer is a MUST ORDER when dining here!
I had a small soup ($ 2.49 with the entrée), which was a seafood chowder that was fantastic. Another MUST ORDER!
For our entrée, we each had the Barramundi with Sherry Lobster Sauce ($ 17.99). This is a white fish that was cooked to perfection and served with a delicious sauce and served over rice. The only issue I had was with the rice; my rice was hard, as though it was not completely cooked. My wife’s rice was fine. I told the waiter about it and was quickly given a large bowl of the rice, which was fine. The sauce was so delicious that they needed to put more on the plate. I asked for additional sauce and was given a tiny bowl of sauce; it would have been perfect if there was more sauce, as this was key to the wonder flavor of this dish. If you like sauce, I recommend that you request a large amount of sauce at the time you order.
For dessert we had Banana Fritters ($ 7.99) which was served with a great chocolate sauce.
The service was perfect, and the view of the harbor and Moro Rock was great. There are some very interesting blown glass light fixtures which will catch your eye. The utensils are amusing with their fish motif.
I highly recommend this restaurant.

A family member that told me that there are no good restaurants in Morro Bay, I thought they were crazy and Unilocalers would help me find some good food. We’ll i was completely wrong and Fish bonez was a huge disappointment.
This is the first time that I have been completely deceived by Unilocal.The food was completely underwhelming. I would have enjoyed Rubios fish grill more then this place.
We ordered the sea bass and the shrimp nachos and both were pretty lousy.
The only reason I gave it a 2 star was because it has a nice view of the bay.
If you are visiting Morro Bay I would skip Fish Bonez and try your luck somewhere else.

I came here for my engagement dinner with my family and friends to celebrate this past weekend. We were a large party of 20 with no reservations so we were very happy that Fish Bones was so accomodating to our last minute plans. The restaurant was pretty empty when we arrived around 6pm and the manager said he could only seat our group outside on the deck. There was a really HIGH CHANCE OF RAIN that night and the weather was extremely chilly, but we took the outdoor seating since we were all there already.
Our waitress was absolutely lovely! We adored her so much. She was friendly, charming, and managed our large party with ease and conviction. We were so happy with her superior customer attentiveness and she really saved the day with her great personality. The food was good and everyone seemed to enjoy the meal. The crab louie salad was a HIT!
But our MAJOR ISSUE was that it was FREEZING on the deck. There were a few heat lamps off to the side but it didn’t really reach where we were sitting. I had grandparents and young children with our party and they were all really uncomfortable and cold. As soon as our food reached the table, everything was cold within 5 minutes. Try eating a seafood pasta dish cold and clumpy – It was not enjoyable at all. The inside of the restaurant was still fairly empty so we were confused of why we sitting outside when we could have easily fit inside. I mean, we’re paying customers and guaranteed money for the night. Eventually, the rain clouds were getting really heavy above and the deck got really dark. As soon as it started to sprinkle, the party came to a sad end. And luckily we left when we did because moments later, it started POURING rain.
Overall, I think it was an okayyyyy night. It could’ve been a really AMAZING AND MAGICAL engagement night, but the weather condition and outdoor seating kind of put a damper on things… literally. We ordered a sh*t TON of food and at least 8 bottles of wine. I had a memorable engagement regardless and our waitress did her best to take care of our party.
My fiancé and I come back to Morro Bay at least twice a year (since this is our special spot) but unfortunately, we won’t be returning to Fish Bonez on our future visits.

The place is hard to find. It’s upstairs and is poorly labeled from the outside. However, once you go in and go upstairs, it’s actually a pleasant space with a beautiful view of the ocean and a nice outdoor space. Unfortunately, I went for dinner, so I had no such view. The service was great and I really liked our waitress. However, food is paramount.
For appetizers, we ordered the prosciutto-​wrapped dates with goat cheese, Rockefeller oysters, chicken-​rice soup, various salads. The dates were pretty standard. The Rockefeller oysters were a little undergrilled and a little briny (I know some people prefer it this way). I LOVED my chicken-​rice soup, primarily because the broth was actually a coconut one… how can anyone resist.
Unfortunately, the rest of the meal devolved. I had the linguine with clams. It sounded promising, but the pasta didn’t have great texture, and of the clams, 4 were fresh, and I think they poured 30 small clams from a can into the pasta, which was not great. It was obvious they didn’t have good fresh clams. The other people I dined with ordered the «special» and the shrimp scampi. The scampi was a little bland. The «special» was what I had a large problem with. It was a combo crab claw, shrimp, and lobster dish. The lobster tail was pretty good, shrimp was OK, and the crab claws AWFUL. I was tempted to complain, but since I was with my parents, I held back.
This is the reason I gave this place a 2. The crab claws had this stringy texture, and the claw meat, instead of being sweet, was actually bitter. I am actually concerned that they served me dead crab meat, because I’ve never had crab meat taste like that. It was actually not palatable, and the dish was $ 35. It’s a shame, because I actually like the décor and service of the place.

I came with a large group to watch the December boat parade. The food was solid, but ridiculously pricey for what you get. Most of the dishes are pretty boring restaurant staples like fish & chips, shrimp scampi, lobster, steak, etc.
I ordered Calamari, Shrimp Scampi, and the banana fritters. Both the calamari and scampi (with 4 shrimp) were average tasting small portions for the high price. The banana fritters were inventive and delicious. The bright spot of my visit.
Without the fritter dessert, this would probably be a two star review.

AMAZING! After our horrible dinner experience in Pismo Beach the night before, I was ready for a great meal and Fish Bonez did not disappoint.
After checking into our cute «no tell Motel» we wondered down to the waterfront to have a glass of wine and a bite. Most restaurants are your typical touristy trap places claiming to have the best chowder or fish-​n-​chips. Not impressive to me at all. Then we stumbled into Fish Bonez. It’s above Rose’s which we walked into first and 5 seconds after sitting down we got up and walked right back out.
Fish Bonez has breath taking views, superb service and food that will knock your socks off. The décor is modern nautical with a great red bar and rich blue walls. Huge patio that I’m sure is packed on warmer days. I stepped out for a minute to enjoy the fresh air and sip my wine. Truly lovely.
It was still early so the restaurant was a little slow. We pulled up two seats at the bar and scanned the bar menu. Hubby ordered a beer and I had water. The wonderful woman behind the bar this evening was actually the restaurants executive chef Rebecca. It was obvious that she is passionate about this place and making sure her customers have a memorable experience. She also noticed I was only drinking water and had me taste one of the Chocolate Porters which was okay but I’m just not a big beer fan.
Per Rebecca’s suggestion we ordered the goat cheese stuffed dates on crostini. These little bites of goodness were rich and sweet and just a perfect start to the evening. We hadn’t decided on dinner just yet so we paid our bill and wanted to wonder around the waterfront to check out some other restaurants. 15 minutes later we ended right back at Fish Bonez and back in our seats at the beautiful red bar. Rebecca asked us if we’d rather sit at a table by the window and we laughed and said no thank you, the bar was fine and we honestly wanted to enjoy her company. By this time tables were filling up fast. One group came in and kept commenting on the stunning view and atmosphere. I had to completely agree. Chef Rebecca made her menu recommendations and we gladly followed her expert suggestions. Here’s what we had:
Ribeye with peppercorn sauce served over a bed of soft buttery garlic mashed potatoes, perfectly cooked asparagus and Chef Rebecca convinced me to add shrimp which were plump, juicy and oh so yummy. HOLLY HEAVEN IN MY MOUTH!!! The best meal I’ve had in years and I’m not easy to please. Everything was seasoned perfectly, cooked exquisitely and plated in such a way that I knew it was love at first sight. And if that wasn’t enough to make you run here, listen to what the Hubby had.
Seafood plate — shrimp scampi, crap clusters and lobster tail served over rice and a side of drawn butter. Yes folks … this was a meal for kings and we felt like royalty. Each item was succulent and buttery and tasted like it was caught that morning. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. And if that wasn’t enough, we had dessert too!
Banana Fritters with warm chocolate sauce. 5 soft, hot, doughy balls of heaven. We could only eat one each so Chef Rebecca boxed up the rest, including the warm chocolate sauce (which I’m eyeing right now and thinking about taking a bite). We were stuffed, smiling and excited that our evening wound up being so incredibly special.

No chowder & no fried food, just fresh clean AMAZING dishes that will please everyone.
