The Exploring Joara Foundation specializes in educational programming related to the science of archaeology and study of early history within western North Carolina. Exploring Joara leads educational programs such as field trips, workshops, summer camps, and more. Exploring Joara is based out of the Wall Center for Archaeological Research in downtown Morganton. We serve home-​school, public, and private schools through support of standard curriculum. Exploring Joara offers specialized workshops and events to students of all ages with a passion and interest for history and archaeology. Housing is available for groups interested in group tours, workshops, or learning adventures.

History

Established in 2007.

The Exploring Joara Foundation was formed owing to the need for public involvement in on-​going archaeological research conducted in the region. Exploring Joara is 501©3 non-​profit organization which is supported through memberships, donations, and grants.

Meet the Manager

John K.

Manager

John serves as the Staff Archaeologist for the Exploring Joara Foundation in Morganton, NC. He conducts field trips, presentations, workshops, and other activities associated with the educational programming conducted by Exploring Joara. John studied archaeology in Florida and is interested in research on early colonial interactions.
