Johnson Garden Center

I love this place. I’ve lived in Morgan Hill for over twenty years, and have been coming here and to Ace Hardware since they opened. What I enjoy the most about the garden center is the staff. They’re a hardworking group of people who really try to meet their customers’ needs. I can find any kind of plant here, and have! If I have a question, they’re always ready to help. One of the strapping young men is always volunteering to carry stuff out to the car.
Last week, though, they went above and beyond for me. I have been coveting some plant hangers that were being used for display inside the store. I asked about them, and no one knew if they were actually for sale or were part of the store furnishings. Finally someone decide to call Bruce. Bruce is the boss, I think. He’s probably in his late forties and is a tall, strong guy with a heart of gold. He came on the scene and speculated with me for awhile about the hangers, and then hopped on the computer to find out if the merchandise was listed in stock. It kinda was and it kinda wasn’t, and a pencil pusher kind of person would have shooed me away. Not Bruce. He knew I wanted it and I felt like he wanted me to have it!
He located merchandise in the computer that seemed to match the hangers, priced them accordingly and sold them to me. I was grinning from ear to ear and promptly bought a whole bunch more stuff to hang on them!
It was a great customer experience, and one that is increasingly rare in this day and age. It really is like having a neighbor who sells cool stuff. Highly recommend.

This place has interesting stuff. It’s a little on the spendy side. We’ve been here a couple times. We even got a coupon in the mail, came in intending to use it but everything was so spendy we didn’t. Even the strawberry terracotta planters, I liked that they had larger pockets. Twice what you’d pay elsewhere.
I’ve bought a small succulent and a spring cactus here. The spring cactus was extremely dry and was so happy to get a drink when I got home. Those plants were a decent price. Everything else though. Geez!

Bumped into this garden center which is next to a farmers market. Great variety of plants sun or shade. The staff were helpful, we need shade plants that will grow under the pine trees in our back yard. Hope what we purchased works. The store next door was also a great find. Well worth the trip.

Their prices are a bit higher, but you get what you pay for. Knowledgeable staff and quality plants. Their indoor gifts are unique too.

I am a local landscape contractor in town. I serve the bay area and have been to many wholesale nurseries. I can’t say how much I appreciate the customer service I recieve EVERYTIME I go there. Staff is friendly, courteous and very helpfull. I bring many residential customers there and they are so pleased with the quality of plant material. Not only that, but the way everything is staged and presented. Bruce and Kelly are the managers and are always up to date with certain conditions (drought) and are more than willing to go the extra mile to make you happy! If you don’t know where to go, forget home depot, lowes and any of the other large chains! They have everything you’ll need. They have equally great service at Johnson Lumber Ace Hardware store (right next store) So glad your so convenient! Chris Houle

yes you could pay a little less at home depot for some things but you get what you pay for. johnsons has a much better selection of annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetabes, trees, and pottery than depot, lowes, and most other nurseries you’ll ever go to.

I really enjoy spending time walking through their gift shop and outside flower plants selections. I’ve purchased plants from this location to use in my yard over the years and have enjoyed seeing them grow.

I want to love this place, I really do, but twice now bugs have entered our yard through their plants. We moved into a newly built house in Morgan Hill and landscaped the yard in phases this year through a landscaper. All was well until I brought home Johnson’s alyssum which apparently had tiny beetles that exploded in number. Now I am being eaten alive by no-​see-​ums, little gnats that were apparently brought in on shade plants 2 weeks ago. We had to pay $ 155 to have the yard sprayed and I’ve had to visit the doctor for the excruciating itches and welts their bites cause. I was told by Johnson’s today that they have no methods of pest control. They don’t spray. If they see bugs, they remove the plant. Gnats are less than an ¹⁄₈ of an inch and difficult to see. We’re going to Almaden Valley Nursery from now on. Their plants may be more expensive, but it’ll still be cheaper than exterminators and doctors visits!

This place is a lovely way to spend an afternoon, looking at plants and pots. The plants always appear to be in good shape, even during winter. If you need a pot — this is the place to go. They have a huge variety, and the prices really do range from the reasonable to expensive. The staff is always helpful. The customer service is great, but be prepared — it can get busy here when its a sunny weekend. (As any garden center can.)

This place is COOL! Great plants. WAY bigger than it looks from the outside. You MUST go look for yourself!

This garden center carries a huge variety of plants. There are some great positives about this store. If a unique plants exists, they probably have it in stock or can get it for you. Their staff is INFORMED, understands plants and varieties and knows what they are doing. They are quick to help and very pleasant. Unlike other garden stores, they do understand plants, and aren’t just their to ‘work’ the cash register. If you have questions about plants, and who doesn’t, they can help. As other reviewers mentioned, it is more expensive than other places and that is the down-​side. Still, I often find myself shopping here because of the selection. In addition, they seem to have «weeded out» inferior gardening gloves and only carry gloves that work well, fit well and well-​priced. The same comment applies to the gardening products they carry. I’d recommend going here when you want unique plants that the big box stores won’t carry, or for beautiful house plants, pots and lovely gifts.

I’m going to focus on the Hybrid Tea rose selection. It’s very good, not excellent like Yamagami’s, but you don’t have to drive to Cupertino either. I found some classic favorites that used to be hard to find: Mr. Lincoln, Just Joey, and a new one called «Secret’s Out» which combines the full fragrance of Secret with disease resistant folliage. Fantastic. Also they had «Drop Dead Red» — which is intense in its contrast of green, healthy, thick leaves and abundant deep red roses. Not much fragrance.
The point being that their selection was very very good, And they had a 15% off sale, so not only do you save gas, you get a discount on other places. Moldy plants were few. The staff were courteous and constantly watering or caring for the plants. THANK GOD. Because roses are finicky and need that hyper-​vigillant care. Their work paid off because for the last three weeks I’ve been getting constant flowers for my home.

The plants and flowers are beautiful in this place BUT the price and customer service are bad.
The woman who is a cashier in her 50s is rude. I bought over $ 300 of plants and expected for them to be delivered but she did not bother to follow-​up and was rude. I would not recommend this place after the unpleasant experience with the cashier.

Great plant selection and a knowledgeable and helpful staff make this my favorite place to shop! Kelly and Amanda helped me plan my orchard of 30 fruit trees last year and this spring I attended the Pruning Workshop, which was SO helpful for a first-​time pruner.

I actually like this place a lot, although this was not always the case. A number of years ago I thought the plants were pretty dull, but I used to occasionally come here to look at the pots or buy an indoor plant/​pot as a gift. But I really think that there’s been a change there recently. Yes, the plants can be above average in price, but the selection is quite nice. I like to look for some unusual plants or things I’ve seen in garden catalogs and this place sometimes has them … then I’d have to say their prices are probably better than the catalogs’. Also most of the people who work there a very friendly.

This is a nice looking place and may be good for plants (I’ll update if I buy plants).
I was looking for pest traps that the big box stores don’t carry. The pest selection here is pretty minimal and the staff didn’t know where I could get them. Turns out Tractor supply had them.

Beautiful gift shop and interior plant scapes — you can wander through that section for a while!
Going through to the back, there is a huge selection of herbs, veggies, perennials, grasses, and trees. Lots of neat pottery and fountains, too.
The staff is informative and helpful, too. Prices are moderate, but it can really add up as you get sucked into the beauty! They’ve done a great job with the setup and atmosphere.
