Spa W

I make an appointment for various services every Friday at Spa W. The staff is extremely friendly. They are never over-​crowed. You are always offered hot tea or water when enjoying a pedicure. They are more expensive than other local nail salons but I believe they do a much better job. Will does excellent massages. I highly recommend him for a 15 minute chair massage after your mani pedi!

I first visited this spa when it initially opened, and the manager appeared to be running both this salon and the tanning salon next door (which, after a few management turnovers, is now out of business). At first, the service was consummate and worth of the premium pricing. I enjoyed a facial and a massage during its first year of operation, but have only been back for the nail services. At first the service felt luxurious, but now I feel like since they’ve expanded their clientele, they have to rush through the nail services. They use mostly OPI, have a few essie, and used to do Chanel polish but I think they got rid of them. I feel like there’s a difference in customer service for the regulars vs. the occasional patron (me — I usually only treat myself to a mani/​pedi once a month) but maybe I’m being overly sensitive? All in all, I might stop by if in need of a quick manicure because of geographic proximity, or to use a coupon from their email blasts, but I’ll most likely seek another salon as my regular place.

Although I am well into my 50’s, most people think I look about 16. I swear. Anyway, there’s nothing better than regular facials to keep your skin looking 40 years younger than it really is.
Spa W would have a lot more cachet if it were not in the CVS strip mall in Montvale. I made an appointment for a brow wax and basic facial, which I quickly upgraded to the lofty ‘Collagen Facial’ when the receptionist complimented me. I’m stupid that way.
It’s a beautiful place… high ceilings, breezy and elegant… with huge front windows so large you feel you could practically reach out and touch the SUVs on Kinderkamack Road. Oh wait. You almost can. Someone brings you a cup of tea while you wait. And wait. Finally my brow lady approached.
She was a charming Korean woman, quite young and ingratiating. This was our exchange:
Me: Not too thin. Just clean up the strays.
Her: OK. Lie down please.
Me: Not too thin, OK?
Her: You like thin brow?
Me: No. No I don’t.
Her: No thin.
Me: No. Just the strays.
Her: *girlish giggles*
By now you’ve guessed the end of this story. Through some strange wax miscommunication, I was left with just the strays and no brows. For the next several weeks — despite judicious use of pencils, powders and gels — it was like Uncle Leo + explosion + Sharpie.
Anyway, the facial part is okay. The collagen mask consisted of… an actual mask with eye, nose and mouth holes. W.T.F. This was placed on my face for 15 minutes while she gave me a massage, which I have to admit was pretty awesome. She told me I should come back every 2 weeks for the collagen mask. Um. Yeah. Except no.
Anyway, if you like to be pampered and are not all that interested in maintaining your incredibly youthful appearance, Spa W will fill the bill. And let’s not forget the view!

The place does a nice job, but way overcharges. 42 dollars for a mani-​pedi? That’s supposed to be a discount? Ridiculous. I mean, honestly, it was good, but I didn’t get a massage or anything, and to me that is part of the package, at least a few mins of massage or something. The place is nice, clean, nothing wrong with it. But it’s just that– ok.
