Econo Lodge Monterey Fairgrounds

Recently stayed overnite at this econo lodge. We had two rooms and both were deplorable from the heater that did not work, no extra blanket and a smoke detector that kept going off.
Staying in a tent would be a luxury compared to this experience. The worst Econo Lodge I have ever stayed at. DO NOT STAY HERE!

We chose the hotel because it advertised a pool and hot tub. Upon arrival I was told
the City closed down the hot tub” should have turned around there but didn’t. We could not use the pool because it was disgustingly filthy .Room had incredibly strong «auto fragerance dispenser» which was horrendous (we unpluigged it) The refrigerator in the room wasn’t plugged in and when we tried to correct that — it wasn’t close enough to a plug to reach. Never again !!!

It is what it is but not a bad value for the money the room was clean but smelled of cleaner when we entered. the bed was very comfortable the bathrooms were clean but the paint was chipping off the walls and the water sprayed in all directions in the shower. The continental breakfast is what you would expect some Costco pastries A few slices of bread and some bulk cereal. I would not use the pool if you paid me, it greeted you with a sign about diarrhea in bold print. The staff was pleasant enough and the surrounding area was quiet. I did find it odd that there was a ashtray bolted to the wall outside my non-​smoking room where other tenants like to gather. Overall if you’re looking for a bang for your buck and want to be near the fairgrounds not a bad choice

This is by far the worst Econolodge I have ever stayed at.
Bathroom sink seemed about to fall off the wall.
Cracked and loose tiles on the bathroom floor shifted with every step.
Water did indeed come out of the shower head, barely. My usual five minute shower took fifteen minutes. Same problem with the sink. I understand low-​flow faucets, but that was ridiculous.
Bare light bulbs.
Disgusting carpet that I didn’t dare walk barefoot on.
Carpet tacks at the bathroom threshold that stabbed my feet.
Dirty stained chair that I didn’t sit on.
A non-​smoking policy does not prevent the room from stinking or prevent neighboring rooms from smoking right outside the window.
Someone was clearly living permanently in the room three doors down. I had to walk past their awkward open door and full ash tray to get to my room.
Hot tub was half full of stagnant filthy water with a putrid smell.
Receptionist greeted me sitting down and never stood up or took off his sunglasses or earbuds.
I have never paid so much ($ 140/​night) for so little. Clearly there is very high demand for hotel accommodations in Monterey which means the owners of this Econolodge have plenty of business and don’t have to put in even one ounce of effort to fill rooms.

At 1^st glance ok. Asked for downstairs, got upstairs, only had decaf coffee in room. Fridge not cold. Had a monthly resident living in room next door who was loud, constantly working on his truck. Second day no maid service, we were told when coming back from the beach there was no water in the rooms! Wtf 4 girls no water plz. Not likely to stay here again

This place was the most disgusting place I’ve ever stayed at. We frequent Monterey often, we stay in cheap motels like motel 6 bc the fact is we aren’t in the room that much. At 90 $ a night wed/​thurs stay i figured that it was a decent place to stay. I don’t now do reviews but after staying here i decided people should know. Tweakier everywhere. There was a run down motorhome out front. Should have been our 1^st sign. The curtains barely hanging on. The carpet looked like black but is suppose to be green with red specks & had not been vacuumed since the last people have left. Beds are horrible. Bathroom wall looks like some smeared human waste on the wall, tub looked like sit had not been cleaned in forever, shower curtain is cloth with stains of brown on it. Mold everywhere. Left shortly after we check in to only come back to our room keys not working. Had them redone, next day it happen again twice. The 2^nd time i had gone it & they made me feel like it was my fault. Telling me it was bc it was next to my cell phone. Well i never ever had that be the case in any only hotel/​motel! 3^rd i left them in my car never near my cell phone. still they become demagnetized. We had a do not disturb sign on the door & someone knocked on the door when i opened it there was a hispanic man holding dirty towels & a vacuum said oh just checking. Nothing saying he worked there & this women was multiple time trimming the ivy bush out front of our room. Stay far away from this place. This place should be shut down. Zero zero zero !!!

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO STAY IN A DECENT HOTEL THIS IS NOT IT. Wow! Where do I even begin with the problems. When we walked in the door jam was screwed up. It looked like they had been pried previous. I used the restroom. There was no toilet paper, shower door open with a wet towel, on the floor of the shower. The back of the bathroom door had a used shower cap with toilet paper stuck in it. ½ of the counter was broke off. There were stains and everything was shoddy. The towel bar was put on so crooked the towels barely stayed on. There was no deadbolt. It was very noisy. There was never anyone at the front desk. The lady at the front counter said put the do not disturb sign on. The next morning another worker said they didn’t have do not disturb signs and put my number on a sticky note so the maid wouldn’t disturb us.
There were stains on the walls, holes in the walls, the bed was dilapidated.

DO NOT STAY HERE. I would give zero stars if I could. They checked me into a room that the GUESTS HADN’T CHECKED OUT OF. I’m not talking about the room not being clean. I’m talking about people’s luggage, personal items were everywhere. I was lucky that no one was in there at the time (could you imagine what could have happened to me?!). And thank goodness I am a good person, because I had access to all of their things!!!
When I ran and told the front desk they promptly blamed the guests for not letting them know they intended to stay longer. Uhm, if your check out time is 11am and check in time is 3pm, and supposedly your maids check and clean each room before 3pm how do you miss this and put both me and your other guests in a dangerous situation? And how do you send a girl into a room where STRANGERS ARE STILL IN where she could potentially be RAPED OR HURT!!!
They moved me to a new room but the more I sat there, the more uncomfortable I felt thinking at any moment someone could barge in the same way I did unknowingly on some other guest’s room. I ended up barricading myself in with two chairs shoved against my door. Outside I could hear all sorts of people with dogs loitering — it was a very uncomfortable feeling.
When I finally ventured out of my room to try to enjoy my vacation I went to speak to the front desk. I told them how unsafe I felt and he told me he can’t do anything but speak to the manager in the morning. When I spoke to the manager in the morning she said there was nothing she could do since I already stayed, but had I left last night they would have refunded me fully. Uhm, are you serious? So YOU tell me to stay, and then because I did exactly what you said you can’t give me a refund or partial discount? And this refund was NEVER mentioned as a possibility for not staying and you’re going to tell me about it the next day when it’s already too late?
If you want to get RAPED, INJURED and don’t mind scumbags who are clearly on DRUGS loitering about stay here. If you VALUE YOUR LIFE and want to actually enjoy your vacation stay anywhere else.

Cute little motel, a little dated but by far not the worst I’ve seen. The room was clean the staff were friendly and the breakfast was simple (toast, coffee, Danishes and cereal) maybe I have simple tastes but that’s enough to keep me happy breakfast wise… I mean it’s easy! And yum! The wifi was pretty average but that’s to be expected. Would stay here again if passing through!

If I could put zero for this place I would. What was wrong? Oh just a few:
i. Bathroom door would not stay closed. ii Unidentified organic matter permanently affixed to toilet porcelain. iii No pressure in bathroom faucet. Huge pressure in bathtub. No pressure in the shower. iv Filthy carpet with noxious odor. v. Holes in walls and ceiling with exposed disconnected wiring. Accommodations only for those with strong stomachs

My friends and I booked two rooms under one name and they allowed us to check in without the person whose name was used to book it… I don’t think that’s allowed. Anyways the people working the desk gave us our friends’ room key so that week could prank them… Also don’t think that’s allowed. It made for a great April Fools joke, so I have no complaints about that part of the stay.
Walking into the room I was amused to see the arrangement of furniture. There was a stove, ancient coffee pot, fridge, miniature safe on top of some block contraption, and a hole in the wall used as a closet. The carpet was falling apart and there were used q-​tips scattered around the room.
The lack of outlets caused us to unplug the fridge and microwave in order to charge our phones.
While pranking the other room we discovered they were provided no toilet paper or trashcans. Also, there was some mysterious white bed sheet folded on top of the «closet» with a definite bloodstain on it… Hmmm.
After surviving the night we made our way to the free breakfast. If you like toast then you will be happy, otherwise I’d suggest going elsewhere.
I wasn’t really expecting anything after reading other reviews, and you shloud not either. We survived but if you’re not a poor college student under the age of 21, save your money by booking another hotel or just sleeping in your car.

This was absolutely the worst hotel stay my wife and I have ever had. I will NEVER stay in an Econolodge hotel again. The first room I was given had not been cleaned by house cleaning at all. I opened the door and the TV was on, the bedding was on the floor, there was trash and food on the table, floor and bed. This was my first impression of the place. I was disgusted. I was quickly given another room, which had been «cleaned». We were in a hurry to get to a wedding, so we just dropped our stuff and left. It wasn’t until we got back later that evening that we realized what «clean» meant to their staff. There was hair EVERYWHERE in the bathroom. The toilet, shower, and sink only looked like they had been quickly wiped down, not even cleaned. The carpet didn’t appear to have been vacuumed. Due to this, I was afraid to even pull back the bedding to see what condition that was in. We immediately packed up our car, checked out, and found a much nicer hotel just outside of town.
I paid for two nights, and was in the room for all of 30 minutes before I was so disgusted I left.
When I checked out, the employee told me that he would have the manager call me back to speak with me regarding my complaints. I have yet to receive a call.
If this is how their establishment does business and presents itself, then I will stay as far away as possible. I knew I was getting an inexpensive hotel, and was not expecting the Four Seasons. What I did not expect was a den of refuse.

My husband and I were just in Monterey for the weekend on a diving trip with very early morning dives, so we were mostly just looking for a cheap place to sleep rather than driving back and forth to San Jose. That being said, we didn’t have too many expectations for a room. For the price we paid (about $ 47 a night via Hotwire), we got a decently clean bed (and I make sure to inspect my hotel beds carefully), a hot shower after our dives, and from what I could tell, a fairly safe area to keep our gear during the days. The room had a clean mini fridge and microwave as well as fairly spacious closet space. There was wifi (though not too strong) and cable tv (on outdated, small television sets, which isn’t important to me anyway).
I’ve stayed in budget hotel rooms several times in the past, and overall I would say that this hotel was just a LITTLE below average what I would expect from similar two-​star hotels. Our room could have used a routine carpet cleaning. The same goes for the bathroom, which had countertops that appeared water-​stained, walls/​wood foundation with chipped paint, and slightly rusted doorknobs. The shower was clean, which is a good plus, but the ceiling was covered in a few stray bugs that made me a little uncomfortable. The furniture could have also used a little loving and/​or updating and if room service is something you look forward to and coming back to clean sheets and towels, this may not be for you because we never had anyone come into our room.
For under $ 50 a night, I feel like I can’t complain too much. The room served its purpose and if I needed a cheap place to stay again, I wouldn’t be opposed to another visit here. All I’m saying is that I’ve seen a little better room quality at the Days Inn :)

Absolutely horrific! They literally used the thick floor tiles to make the sink. Disgusting room, not clean, beds were ridiculously uncomfortable and loud ass neighbors were up ALL night long moving furniture and stomping around upstairs. The rooms look nothing like the website shows and nothing in the room worked properly, from the tv to the heater, nothing worked. Plus there were no plugs at all in the room, so you could not even plug in a charger for your phone. Never again!

I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels in my life and will never stay here again. Filthy! Broken tiles, ripped carpet and holes in the walls. I will say the toilet was nice and clean. There were parties going on in several rooms, people yelling from the balcony and there was a school behind our room having band practice at 11:00pm! All I hear was drums beating for hours. I understand it is just a place to lay your head but there was no rest. Oh, plus the tv didn’t work! I purchased my room through Expedia with a no cancel policy and paid $ 78.00 for the night. That was $ 77.99 wasted! I think I’ll skip the continental breakfast! Oh and by the way, the heater/​c doesn’t work either!

Go directly to jail, do not pass go and do not collect your 200 dollars. This place is an over priced joke, I’m sure the homeless have better cardboard boxes to sleep in.
I understand that this is Monterey and hotels can be expensive, but COME ON! I so overpaid, the room wasn’t even properly cleaned. There was trash still in the trash can, beds weren’t properly made, didn’t even have fitted sheets on the bed, the headboards weren’t even connected to the bed and didn’t match each other, I could hear the conversation of the drug dealers in the next room. It smelled of chloroform, and bum sex. The shower head was covered in calcium build up, the thermostat didn’t turn on… all in all this was a janky hotel. I would highly recommend taking an add off of Craigslist and taking your chances on a strangers couch, I’d rather endure a cuddle struggle than go through that crap hole.

Just… NO.
Our room was not clean upon entry. It’s the type of place that kind of makes you shrink into yourself and fearfully peel back the blankets on the bed before settling in.
Low and behold, the bed sheet were not changed. There was a panti-​liner sticker off a bikini stuck on the wall. I’m not kidding. On the WALL.
We asked to have someone come and clean the room while we unloaded our car.
The woman at the front desk apologized and sent someone immediately. WE would have switched hotels or at least rooms, but we were there for the Monterey First City Festival and were out of other options.
That night, my friend and I hesitantly stumbled back to the room. We got in the bouncy yet hard bed… tossed and turned ALL NIGHT. I woke up with an injured shoulder! We were so tired, we decided to check out early and nap on the fairgrounds at the festival.
The only positive was its close proximity to the festivals entrance. Literally up the back exit of the hotel’s parking lot and across the street.
Never again. Ever. I would rather sleep in a car.

Expensive as shit and the dirtiest, smelliest room I have ever rented! I almost slept outside instead… the place is also old as fu*k. Shitty ass boxy TV with sorry ass channels. Smelly blankets and bathroom. Everything is broken including AC. I wished I could give it a negative 2 or 3 stars. Dookie stains all over the walls. Hopefully I didn’t catch any diseases.

Decent Inexpensive No Frills Lodging

I was hitting the South Bay «Farm and Sea to Fork» YEE that Abby, Nique and Jelena were throwing on the Sunday MLK, Jr. weekend — and the day that Seahawks won over the 49ers (W00T!), and so I was tempted to crash in Monterey that night so I could chill probably that evening as well as hang out for another day in Monterey.
Question was, did I want to spend money that I didn’t really have to, or was there another option? There was another option: this hotel.
THE SETUP
Since I really didn’t want to spend nearly $ 100 to stay at the La Playa Carmel Hotel for a single night of just crashing, I decided to use accumulated Choice Hotel points for a night here. 6000 Points was all I needed which was the equivalent of $ 40 if I had paid the corresponding $ amount. Not too shabby either way.
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR (OR DON’T PAY FOR ACTUALLY)
But as in anything in life, there are limitations on what you can get when you go «on the cheap».
* First of all, there were absolutely NO outlets anywhere in the room. Except for the one behind the TV & Dresser riser — which I could not get to.
* Luckily, there was a surge protector that came out of that outlet and placed next to the TV. But this was no where close to either the desk in the room, or the table next to the bed. I was just lucky that my computer cord was (almost) long enough. (I had to be careful to not trip on it while walking around the room since the cord was partially suspended in the air a few inches off the ground.
* Also, more pillows would have been nice. There were only two small pillows on the bed, and no extra ones to be found in the closet.
* I suppose since this was a no frills stop, there was also no free ice. I was lucky I had quarters so I could put in a quarter in their on-​premises ice-​machine to fill my plastic sport cup I had from the 7-​Eleven to use with my Pepsi One cans of soda (my preferred soda of choice), a cube I always bring on road trips with me.
* No hot foods (no eggs, no sausage, no bacon, no pancakes, etc.) with their complimentary «breakfast». Barely just one step above a vending machine with only bread to make toast with and some pastries and dry cereal (not even bagels or cream cheese).
But it was a comfortable room, a decent bed, a place to catch my hot shower, free WiFi, got to catch a couple episodes of the new BBC’s Sherlock Holmes, got to sleep in until 10am without some friend’s cute rugrat jumping all over me on their couch at 6:30am, and so I can’t complain.
THE LOWDOWN
A decent stop for a quick night’s rest.

Not bad. We ended up staying here for the 2012 Big Sur Half Marathon. We got a really great discounted rate, which was great since many of the other bigger hotels were charging very high rates for this particular weekend.
Check in was fine and we noticed there was complimentary continental breakfast, which I didn’t get to catch anyways, since I was leaving a lot earlier than the start time for the run. Parking is easy and seems to be just enough for all of the rooms. When we walked into our room, everything was clean and it was nice to see a large room with a kitchenette. This was very useful the next morning when we needed to heat up breakfast and whatnot.
The rooms are ok, but the good thing is that they are clean, large, and has the kitchenette — you get what you pay for so I’m not really complaining. Much rather have stayed somewhere okay with a great rate than somewhere nicer for much more $$ for just one night.
