Cooking fat, oil and grease (FOG) is a leading cause of sewer pipe clogs. FOGs cool and congeal on the inner walls of sewer lines and on tree roots that grow in them, much like arterial sclerosis in our bodies. The resulting clog restricts sewage flow, which can back up in your home or property, or even in the street. In fact, kitchen grease is a leading cause of sewer spills into the Monterey Bay.
History
Established in 2003.
The leading cause of sewage overflows is FOG: Fats, Oils, and Grease. FOG builds up in drainage pipes which result in clogs over time. Wastewater collection districts in Northern Monterey County united to form the Southern Monterey Bay Dischargers Group. The Group provides public education on overflow prevention to protect the public health and the environment.
These municipalities serve over 285,000 people in the cities of Salinas, Castroville, Moss Landing, Marina, Sand City, Seaside, Monterey, Del Rey Oaks, Pacific Grove, Carmel, Carmel Valley, and Pebble Beach.
