Helping you explore the Monterey Peninsula by land and by sea. We offer Bike, Kayak, 4-​Wheel Surrey, and Standup Paddle Board rentals and tours. Our open-​deck ocean kayaks are great for beginners and experienced kayakers. You can explore the bay on your own or join one of our experienced tour guides. We also have award winning Breezer Hybrid bikes so you can explore the coast line from Recreational Trail. We recently introduced Road Bikes and Pedego Electric Bikes to our rental fleet so come and check them out.

History

Established in 1987.

Established in 1987 Adventures By The Sea started out with a flat bed truck and a dozen bikes delivered to hotel guests. Frank and Michelle Knight, owners, started delivering bikes to hotel guests and the company soon grew to include kayaks, paddle boards, and tours of the Monterey Peninsula.

Business Owner

Adventures by the Sea began as just that — a love of Monterey Peninsula and the outdoors. Frank Knight, owner of Adventures by the Sea, spent many of his early years bicycling, kayaking, surfing, and generally engulfing himself in the beauty and serenity of the Monterey area.

Wanting to share his experiences with others, Frank began a small rental business delivering bicycles to the local hotels for the enjoyment of people visiting the area. Continued enthusiasm and success have allowed the growth to add kayaking, surreys, and stand up paddleboards to the fleet.

Frank was joined by his wife Michelle in 1991 and together they added numerous locations throughout the Monterey Peninsula. Together, they love «making fun» for their clients and are always on the look out for new «toys» to add to their fleet!

Frank and Michelle are active in community affairs and in the ecological preservation of the Monterey Bay Area. Both are avid paddleboard surfers!

Your one stop shop for kayak & bike rentals. After doing some research, it looked like Adventures by the Sea offered the best rates, and had several locations. We stopped by the Cannery row location because one of their other locations closed a bit earlier.
They have an extensive selection and it is a spacious store. I really enjoyed the kayak experience. We rented the kayak after 4pm, and was able to receive their after 4pm discount that was listed on their site.
From 4pm onwards, kayak rentals are $ 25, and you need to just return the kayak back to the harbor by 7:30PM. Kayaking was very fun, and it was enjoyable to be out in the water. The only animals I saw during an hour were a few sea otters resting in the water nearby. The was a lot of kelp in the water, and it was sometimes difficult to kayak around the entanglements of kelp.
This was also the first time I felt a bit seasick because my kayak was a bit rocky because the water wasn’t that calm as previous kayaking experiences.
Adventures by the sea does provide you with dry bags, waterproof jacket and pants (don’t forget to velcro the cuffs tightly to prevent water from going under your clothes!), and a quick overview of the limitations & map of designated kayak area of that day.
Proceed to cross the street, down the stairs, and to the dock where another employee will go over safety and basic kayaking movements.
Definitely recommend this business!

This is the most terrible tour i have ever took. The guide did not pay any attention to us. We dont know when should we return or whatever. Paying $ 60 per person for a tour without any attention? What a great choice! I paid for the tour because they told me rental was not recommended i am beginner, now whats the difference? The only difference is we paid more and got pissed off. i would not recommend anyone to take this irresponsible tour. Just rent them.

I kayaked with a huge group here.
They give you a jacket and pants, but you’re barefoot. The kayaks are the open kind where your legs are exposed, so put sunscreen on the tops of your feet. Kayak seating is also not adjustable (you place your feet on your chosen level of «steps»), so my 6′+ friend said he was very uncomfortable.
You leave your items in an open cubby or bring it with you in a provided dry bag.
You carry your paddles and walk barefoot across the street to the beach where the kayaks are stored.
We got really lucky and were able to see sea otters and sea lions from less than 20 feet away (apparently otters are vicious, so we were warned not to get too close.)
I’ve kayaked before, but I guess the waters here are rougher. I got slightly seasick within 30 minutes.
The guides are nice and tell stories at various stopping points on the beach. Mine ditched me and my friend when we got pushed all the way out by the current and separated from everyone else. Another guide did come back to help, though.

Went rent kayaks here and the guys there were not really paying attention or helpful. After talking about single or double kayaks we then started to talk about paddleboarding. It wasn’t until I filled out a whole other release and about to pay that he said oh the winds are pretty strong. When coming back the guy was then talking on the phone about his plans for that night as we were trying to figure out what we were suppose to do with the kayak. He then goes oh bring it up here. I’m with my mom who I didn’t really want to struggle with the boat… so I’m 4’11 trying to drag the boat up hill. For $ 30 each in annoyed he didn’t even bother trying to help. It’s a good spot, but due to the horrible customer service o might venture to another company.

We were in Monterey this last weekend for the reggae festival and we decided to go paddleboarding Saturday for a few hours. This was such an easy reservation system and the people working were awesome! I would highly recommend. We saw so much sea life, even had a few sea lions swim close to us to check us out. Monterey is beautiful and whether you rent a kayak or a paddleboard do yourself a favor and do it here, the water is clear all the way to the bottom, there is a ton of sea life and just gorgeous views to take in.
Don’t forget sunblock if you haven’t been to Monterey, it may look cloudy but you will get a sunburn!

We were originally going to go with the glass boat tour, but it turns out the boats were due for repairs so we decided to go with ABTS. My friend and I did the kayaking. I’ve never kayaked before so this was a first for me and my friend. The cost to kayak was $ 30 all day person. They said you can go kayaking in the morning come in for lunch for 2 hours then go back out again. I thought that price was a steal. For that price they provide you with optional waterproof clothing at no extra cost.
The staff was very friendly and informative. They knew everything about about the wildlife in Monterey Bay and took the time to explain why they were endangered and so forth. They also have tandem bikes and electric bikes to ride up and down the trail. They also have paddle boards and guided kayaking tours.
Next time I’m in Monterey Bay again I will go back and go kayaking some more. My only advice is don’t park on the streets with parking meters. Since you only can only park for 2 hours there you can already guess that you’d have to come back in to put more money in the parking meter. If you are there staying at a hotel make the walk down to ABTS and you could potentially ride a bike or be out on the water all day long.

Out of shape dad made the peddle to the Lover’s point and back. Rented the 2 person small surrey for one hour went quick with 2 short 5 min breaks and a 10 min stop for picture. Tip is for street crossing with close poles, have one person get out and push behind is easier to steer, broken pedals and chains you get charged for this if you force pedal uphill.
Hated the required credit card scan even if you want to pay cash! because my chip card the business is liable for fraud since they didn’t have a chip reader.
My family had a blast, 1.5 yr old in front felt safe and we bought his own helmet. Surrey is 2 single track bikes welded together on a frame, not the easiest to steer and only single gear makes it for 2 uphills on the return that are not easy if out of shape.

Stunning. The water is so clear and flora and sea-​life so vibrant. Perfect morning activity for our group of 7. Even our 11 year old daughter got the hang of it. The gear (pAnts and shoes) was perfect. Wish we could have bought hats. Sun screen worked great. Ps. Bobby was very kind Nd helpful.

Adventures By The Sea is a pretty great kayak rental location. My friends and I all got single kayaks for the entire day for $ 30. Be careful if you get motion-​sick or seasick, like me, bc then you might need to cut your trip short in order to not puke into the ocean. I’ve done kayaking at the Berkeley marina and was fine there, but the ocean is an entirely different arena and has much more movement. If I do this again, I’ll take some motion sickness pills beforehand. As it was, I couldn’t really relax and enjoy.
Outside of my own stupidity and seasickness, the staff at Adventures By The Sea were pretty informative and were good at instructing. The staff sets you up with dry bags (so you can put your stuff in there while you’re kayaking) and provides waterproof/​water-​resistant pants to keep you dry. You can also leave your important belonging behind the counter in a safe area. After you receive all the equipment, including the paddle and life jackets, the staff will tell you about the approximate time frames– i.e. It would take us 2 hours round trip to go to the Monterey Aquarium– and what to do if protected animals are in your surroundings. They then lead you across the street to the stretch of beach where they launch you.
Overall, if it weren’t for my seasickness, I would’ve had a great time. We saw a ton of otters. There were also some killer whales in the distance but the staff assured us they were far enough away (in deep sea) that we wouldn’t need to worry, since we wouldn’t be going that far into the sea.

The rental process was easy. They have the boats on the water so there is no need to carry them across the street. You just grab a paddle and a life vest and you are off. I do recommend wearing the splash pants if it is anything other than a very hot day. They water is usually in the 50s, so staying dry will be more comfortable.
The launch location is solid and you have access all the way to Lover’s Point. We saw seals, sea lions, and a few otters paddling to the Aquarium and then to Fisherman’s Wharf and back.
My only complaints are that $ 60 is great if using two kayaks all day, but for a couple hours it is steep. Also, they didn’t tell us what to do if we fell out of the kayak. Fortunately it didn’t happen, but a heads-​up would be nice.

Came here to rent kayaks. It was way cheaper than other places I’ve been to, only $ 30 a person for an all day rental. They also provide you with life jackets, dry jacket and pants, and dry bag. Once you get your gear on they lead you to the shore and send you off on the kayak. They also give you their number so you can give them a call when you come back and they can help you out of the water. The staff was really friendly and helpful the whole day. I definitely want to come back to rent kayaks again and even try out the other rentals they offer.

Rented two paddle board for 2 hours here. Don’t forget to check in here to get a free bottle of water (if you see the deal is on!) We kept running into playful seals that occasionally swam back and forth to check us out!
I’d suggest go to the right side first as you start paddle, as the water is pretty shallow and you can see and meet lots of wildlife there.

Rented a kayak for the day. It was not very expensive. We took off just fine cruised around in the bay for 3 hours then came back. We saw jellyfish, otters, sea lions, seals, and tons of birds. It is definitely a workout for your arms. If you get motion sick take something before you go. We had a great time definitely a highlight of our vacation. The staff was nice and helpful. It is best to go kayaking in the morning before the wind picks up. Also when you go to get out of the kayak watch out for waves. I took a dip in the drink due to a rogue wave. I wish i had a change of clothes. I would definitely come here again.

They insisted on getting an imprint – which I’ve learned never to do, and haven’t done in years since I started making the association with fraud – but relatives were in town and I didn’t want to be a stick-​in-​the mud. Sure enough, fraudulent charges started popping up a few days later. AVOID this place and never let ANYONE make an imprint of your credit card.

Can’t beat $ 30 for an all day kayak rental. They also have paddleboarding, tandem kayaks, lessons and bikes available. They were super helpful, nice and of course, getting to kayak in the ocean with sea lions and otters is pretty priceless. I would definitely use them again. Only thing I would say to be cautionary of: the ocean can get pretty choppy and windy and if you aren’t fairly confident on the water or kayaking, then I’d say do a lesson or pick a lesson unpredictable place.

Amazing service! And a great deal as long as you can last more than an hour on a kayak! $ 30 per person for the day on a kayak, can share a 2 person or get your own. Same price! Amazing wildlife! Seals were curious and kept popping up by our kayak as we ate our lunch.
We decided to bring lunch out on the water and asked for recommendations from the people working. They suggested burritos from next store and they did not disappoint. Two burritos and two drinks for $ 20 was a great deal as well!
The shop offers everything you need to get going and have an amazing day on the water –from cubbies for your clothes, dry water bags for your phone and valuables, towels and water when you get back to wash off your feet, freeeeee water bottle if you check in on Unilocal!Free rental of water resistant pants to keep your butt and clothes dry. And great service all around.
On to the wildlife which they have no control over… It was amazing yesterday!!! Lotssss of otters hanging out since it is a sanctuary. Even some babies laying on their mamas! Also, lots of two types of seals. And the visibility in the water is great as well so if you don’t get sea sick you can watch schools of fish go by!

Love Adventures by the Sea! I’ve been paddle boarding with them on 4 separate times at 2 different locations in the Monterey Bay.
The girl who worked at the Breakwater Cove location was super nice both times we went to see her!
She was very helpful and enthusiastic despite the fact that it was late in the day and we were a group of 6.
Would definitely recommend that location above others!

What a terrific experience, all around. We walked in (without a reservation) as a group of 5 kids and 2 adults. We were outfitted, given a quick lesson, and out on the water within 20 minutes. We saw many sea otters and seals, often so close by that we had to paddle away from them to maintain the 50 ft. distance.
The flat rate makes it easy, no worrying about how long you’ve been out and when you need to return. Minimal effort, wonderful adventure.

Rented bikes here to ride by the wharf, and everything went without a hitch. Bikes were clean and functional and helmets and locks included in the deal.
The only reason I am giving 4 instead of 5 stars is that if you are even a tinge late, you will be charged for another half hour. It is $ 8 an hour, otherwise, and overall it was an enjoyable experience.
NOTE! There IS a Unilocal deal for a free bottle of water, which I didn’t discover until after I left. But in a drought-​stricken state like California, it might not be a bad idea to pick one up.

I really wanted to give this place five stars. My boyfriend took me kayaking for my birthday and this was the spot we had chosen because we had talked to someone on our previous trip to Monterey and he was really nice and explained everything to us. We went on Friday to the shop to reserve our spot for Saturday for the tour because neither of us had kayaked before. The next day we arrived 20 minutes ahead of time which is what they said we should do. We practically got scolded for showing up early. There was so much confusion about what gear to put on and what lifejackets to put on and what to put on that we were kind of left on our own to figure it out. When we got there they told us to take our shoes off. Never having kayaked before we were surprised but at the same time we forgot to put sunscreen on our feet because we were so rushed. The disorganization just added to it. While the kayaking itself was fun and I did enjoy Jan who was our tour guide, my boyfriends feet were completely burned in just two hours. I know we’re adults who are responsible for ourselves but after having been told to take off our shoes (remember: we never kayaked before!) they could’ve at least warned us about the sunscreen on our feet. What could have been a great experience ended up with my boyfriend having to cancel his golf game the next day and being in pain for the rest of our weekend. Bummer!

Just got off the ocean. Rented a tandem kayak with my dad for my birthday. It was great! We got out pretty easily and made our way through the kelp. Got to see a hmch of seat otters which I was hoping to see. We heard one of them making a strange call and realized it was a baby calling for its mom. She came to the rescue and they floated off together. So adorable and so cool to see. Saw another baby and mother eating what looked like a crab.
Only saw a couple of seals… I think one was a sea lion.
The water was pretty calm and wasn’t too windy or busy which was nice.
Jordan helped us out at the shop. We were very happy with the service. Will definitely be coming back, whether for more kayaking or bike rentals.

$ 30 will get one person an all day kayak rental, whether in a single or tandem kayak. So, beautiful boyfriend and I were off for $ 60 for some adventures with friends. I appreciate that they give you all the gear from pants to jackets to the life vests, to a dry bag if you need! There are also cubbies, but if you don’t want a dry bag (or are they called wet bags?) or to use the cubbies, you can ask them to hold your items behind the counter. They held my purse and about a dozen others, apparently, behind there! Much appreciated.
The staff is kind and attentive, and they take good care of you! I was very impressed that they had a member show us the proper stroke technique, as other places I have been (in SD and Morro Bay, so not in the area) have never done that. They showed us a map and told us where to go and where to avoid, and gave us lots of tips and tricks.
The equipment is in good condition and appears to be cleaned regularly. Shop location is excellent, right in the heart of things, and the launch site is ideal! We even saw a pack of otters when we left, and I was the happiest girl ever because otters are sooo dang cute.
All in all, $ 30 for a kayak rental is what you make it! They will set you up as best they can with all the gear and instruction you need.
