History
Established in 1927.
Montebello Ballroom was built in 1927. It was originally an Oddfellows Lodge, where it was the hub of Montebello’s social scene. Throughout the years, they hosted the very best Big Bands during the 30s and 40s, the best rock and roll bands in the 50s and 60s and the best R&B and Soul bands in the 70s. It became Terrazza Jamay in 1976, and operated as a Mexican nightclub, showcasing the best bands from Mexico for the next 36 years. The owner retired in 2012. The building was then bought by the owners of Memories in uptown Whittier. They remodeled it over the last two years and reopened as Montebello Ballroom in 2014. It is the perfect place for your vintage and Great Gatsby themed parties. The perfect mix of of nostalgia and good taste.
Meet the Business Owner
John C.
Business Owner
John came to California in 1982 to train for the Olympic Games. While traveling the world to compete, he was introduced to the cuisines of countless countries. That gave him the experience to, after the 1984 Olympics where he placed 6th in the Decathlon, become a restaurant writer for the LA Times. After about 10 years of reviewing other peoples’ restaurants, he made the leap to opening his own restaurant and swing dancing venue in Anaheim, called Memories. At he height of the swing dancing craze, Memories was named The Best Swing Dance Venue in the US! Memories ultimately moved to uptown Whittier, where it has been a favorite spot for weddings and quinceaneras since 2001. It is John’s favorite reward when families host their daughter’s Quince, then her bridal shower, then her wedding reception, then her baby shower, then her baby’s baptism-all at Memories! And now the same tradition is happening at Montebello Ballroom.
