Turner Hall of Monroe

I loved it. Went here for my companies’ Xmas party. (Similar food to what you might have at Thanksgiving) Loved the food, employees and the atmosphere. I cannot speak to regular meals here but they do a very nice job with large parties.

The food is good atmosphere excellent. So nice love taking parents
here when we are in town everyone enjoys themselves.

Pretzel bun burgers were incredible! Just started the lunch menu yesterday and it’s going to be big! Good service and of course we came for the atmosphere. Best food of our trip.

We originally came here because all the other spots that we originally wanted to go to were already booked. We went with this Swiss restaurant over a different Swiss restaurant because of the steak picture here on Unilocal but decided to just try the Swiss fare since we never went to a Swiss restaurant and thought Hell why not? Might as well taste it.
ATMOSPHERE:
–Empty and desolate.
–We were the only people AT ALL in the restaurant. It was 8:30 pm. We are from Chicago. Maybe everyone here eats really early?
–Classical piano music played over the speaker for 20 minutes. Stopped for another 10 minutes. Then played again. We already started to question the quality of our upcoming meal right after walking in. We stayed because we were already 30 minutes out of way from where we were staying (and everywhere else seemed booked)
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
–Waitress was very nice.
–EXCEPT she was very unknowledgeable about the food.
–We showed her the picture of the steak from Unilocal.We asked her to identify where it was on the menu. She had to go ask someone else what it was. (What? Really??)
–Reviewing our options on the menu, the waitress didn’t even know what half of the food tasted like. Boo boo! Know what you’re serving the patrons!
–Did chat a little with her afterwards which was cool. They were probably bored.
–There was an event or party going on upstairs. Some church was throwing a charity event dealing with Mardi Gras.
FOOD:
Nope.
APPS:
Had the Beer Battered Swiss Cheese with Honey Mustard on the side.
TOO GREASY. Every bite we took, grease leaked on the side of our mouths.
MAIN COURSE:
Had the SCHULBIG. Literally like a 12 in hotdog that was left in the oven too long. It was very hard and chewy on the outside and the bed of sauerkraut it was served on was a little dry but it was okay.
Had the KALBERWURST. Much better texture and tastier than the Schulbig. The onion gravy it was served on did not look appetizing. The carrots and bread were probably the best part of this.
DRINKS:
Sweet Amber and Spotted Cow. Delicious.
The waitress came and brought us tasting samples. That was nice.
OVERALL:
Food was not worth $ 50 AT ALL. (1 app, 2 dinners, 2 beers) I’ve had way better at a dive bar. Customer service– nice but unknowledgeable. Décor and atmosphere– drab. Could use some extensive cleaning.

Turner Hall, a staple refuge for Friday night fish dinners, has recently undergone a soft relaunch. For this, they have revamped their menu, trained new servers and ushered in an up-​and-​coming chef with a great deal of previous experience and passion for an entirely new and enjoyable Turner Hall experience.
Food ⁵⁄₅: Gone are the Jalapeño Poppers and in is a focused menu that draws much of its inspiration from traditional Swiss recipes tailored to Southern Wisconsin’s freshest ingredients. Highlights include the Pheasant Pot-​pie, a flavorful and meaty twist to a typically creamy and bland dish as well as the Hasli Felli (Pork Filet with a mushroom sauce and Spatzle) as well as the Kalberwurst with perfectly caramelized onions as garnish. I’d also recommend ordering a few or all of the specialty rostis to share for the table.
The meal ended on an even higher note with homemade pies. Don’t miss the Swiss Crème Pie and if the chef has Door County cherries on hand, the cherry tart with crème fraîche — hopefully this will become a seasonal fixture on the menu.
Service/​Décor ³⁄₅: As with any new group of staff, the service is still working to match the quality of food. However, with a bit of time and practice I’m hopeful that this aspect will help round out the overall experience. The same can probably be said for the décor as the dining room still has the same, local-​museum-​meets-​community-​center vibe as it has for decades.
Summary: Monroe has recently surged in the food and hospitality sector as it has been picked up by many travel writers and food critics. As many of the town’s best dining experiences focus on lunch menus, Turner Hall is certainly poised to fill a gap for Monroe’s supper crowd and tourists alike. If you’re looking for a sophisticated menu inspired by the town’s Swiss history, Turner Hall should be on your list.

I eaten here for the lunch buffet twice. They provide Swiss food selections and the offerings were plentiful, hot and tasty.

This place makes some of the best Friday Night Fish Fry I’ve ever had in Wisconsin.

Update: Recently went for dinner and found much improved service. Will give it another try soon.
Food is average to good, service is awful to mediocre. Standard Midwestern fare with some good Swiss and other items. Service is slow, with many messed up orders. Recently went to a meeting meal there, a basket of buns was brought to the table. Tore one open, frozen in the middle, told the wait staff, basket was whisked away never to return.

Had heard lots of good things about their Friday night Fish Fry — and finally tried it. Not quite what we expected. The dining room is quite casual and smalltown homey — okay for a family meal. The fish wasn’t very good — my plate arrived without color — very blah. My husband had the buffet with ribs, potatoes and other hot dishes. It was okay — but not great either. Service was nice — efficient but not overly friendly. Monroe really needs more restaurant options — I’m sad this isn’t more appealing or we’d make it more of a habit to go there. I doubt we’ll go back.
