Monon Veterinary Clinic

After having gone to both Monticello Animal Hospital and Anderson’s Veterinary Hospital with both my cats and being underwhelmed and disappointed, I decided to hike it over to Monon Veterinary Clinic since they have Saturday hours from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The hospital is in a newly renovated house that has a white picket fence around it, a newly tarred parking lot and a warm, inviting, clean, organized, charming interior. There was no indication of pet smells whatsoever. Also important, they have an updated website and facebook page where you can learn about the clinic, the work they do, recommendations and how they are involved in helping the community, such as Wellness clinics, assistance to Happy Tails Animal Shelter and Animal Control. Compared to the vets in Monticello, Monon Veterinary Clinic is very modern and involved with animals in more than just profiteering.
The secretary/​receptionist was very kind, and even though we didn’t have an appointment, she asked the veterinarian, Dr. Sam Shields, to squeeze us in before her morning appointments began. The secretary was also kind enough to show us around the facilities, the boarding kennels and give us pricing options. We are excited to find a kennel with a private suite (a room not a cage) that has two windows and ample room for our cat, if we should need it. The cost is $ 15.00 per night, instead of the $ 7.00 for a cage. If you have more than one cat, each additional cat is $ 5.00 for the suite. What a bargain! The boarding rooms smelled clean, newly disinfected, and the two cats in cages looked content, not stressed out.
I thought we would be rushed, but Dr. Shields took 40 minutes giving our little cat a thorough physical exam. They were so gentle handling her that she didn’t hiss, growl, fight or cry like she had at the two previous vet’s offices. Dr. Shields asked us lots of questions which helped her diagnose our baby’s problem, and after concluding that she had allergies like I thought, and that her respiratory infection was the result of her allergies, Dr. Shields gave her an allergy shot. We told Dr. Shields that amoxicillin gave our poor baby diarrhea really bad, and she was the first vet to tell us that there is a shot which would take care of the respiratory infection in one swoop. Why didn’t the other vets let us know that? We asked Dr. Shields to x-​ray our cat’s lungs to see if any damage had occurred from her allergies having been untreated since now, and she told us honestly and upfront that they don’t have expensive medical equipment, but she would call Monticello Animal Hospital for us. Pass, but thank you.
The cherry on top of this great facility, friendly staff and knowledgeable veterinarian is that she only charged us $ 52.00 for the exam, diagnosis and shot. The only downside is that the practice is still fairly new in this location and Dr. Shields doesn’t have medical equipment, like an x-​ray machine, echo machine and oxygen chamber, but I imagine as her practice grows, she will be able to buy the necessary, medical equipment.
