In-Shape: Modesto McHenry North

This is a pretty nice gym. The old YMCA. Pool is nice and the equipment is decently clean.

A little pricey, but inshape is the only gym that has daycare open til 9pm all year long, and they have the indoor pools. Plus the daycare has a full on playground which my son LOVES.
I think the staff at this particular inshape are very friendly and helpful. They didn’t try to talk me into joining like a pushy car salesman (how they are at other gyms). They haven’t asked if I want a trainer– most gyms are also pushy and try to get you to sign up for trainer sessions. They just let me do my thing, and are always available to answer my questions about the schedules of classes and whatnot. I was told you can quit in person– I asked this when I first signed up, since I used to go to fitness evolution where you had to get a notarized letter sent by certified mail in order to quit. I signed up for inshape Aug 2015– they said if I need to cancel or pause the account, I can just do it in person. I haven’t needed to, but I was happy to hear this!

Inshape used to serve entire family needs well. However, that is no longer the case in my opinion. While I appreciate the family swim times and appreciate rules and regulations for everyone to enjoy the hours that works well for their family, this no longer is the case for school schedules and the children’s family swim times during the school year. Inshape has times that children and families can swim. The times strictly set are 7−9pm only. We live in Oakdale. I have chosen to keep my membership because we love inshape and wanted to stay with the club even though we realize we can choose other clubs closer to home. However, I work in Modesto full time and my child attends school in Modesto. I pick up my child and we attend Kids fit on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:15pm. it ends at 5:00pm. We wait for the other water aerobics class to end and then I take my child with me to the warm pool working close with my child in the warm water, as this is best for the particular needs that my child has. it is considered a therapeutic modality. We were told we could not use the pool by one of the front desk employees because the hours for children and families are strictly between 7−9pm. I asked if they would accept a doctors note as to the reason why we would need to use pool. They told us we will need to come back between 7−9pm with no exception not even in any disability or need for a particular family documented by a doctor.
Again, I totally understand the rules and regulations and the reason to not change them… «if you change for one you change for everyone» rule. I understand this and never impose anything on anyone or on any business we are actually a quiet family and very compliant and respectful. However, in this instance this is after all a school year and school nights need to work differently for families in general, anyway again in my opinion. The adults can use the pool all day while kids are in school and there is an adult water aerobics class that keeps the pool closed in the evenings anyway and families need to wait for the class to end. While I can appreciate these hours for a summer schedule, this will not work for some families during the school night and work hours that we can’t come during the day as easily. The gym attendant told me I could put my child in the lap lanes before family swim time but in no circumstance would my child be allowed in the warm water pool until 7pm. ending at 9pm. This does not make sense at al, l as my childs bedtime for school nights is 8pm. I need to find a gym that offers different hours for our family needs especially on a school night. I am disappointed that they would not see my childs case even documented by a doctor.

I have been here a couple times either on a guest pass or to see the personal trainer Fernando. The gym itself gets the job done, there are lots of cardio machines upstairs and there are free weights downstairs and more weight machines. The gym has a pool and racquetball courts both of which I have never used. I have seen the personal trainer Fernando a couple of times and he seems to have a very good understanding of proper body mechanics and works focuses on form while exercising which is great since I know some personal trainers stare at their phones all day instead of paying attention and explaining concepts to their clients.

Man has this place come a long way.
I grew up in Modesto, and learned to swim here when it used to be the YMCA.
I visited my family in town for a week, and my Mom and I were able to get passes to get our workouts in.
Everyone we encountered was very friendly and helpful, especially Rob who set us up with the passes!
Indoor pool, outdoor pools, all your standard cardio machines upstairs, different areas for the weight rooms, many group fitness rooms for spin, etc. and raquetball courts. Also noticed some 15 – 20 minute quick circuit rooms.
Pretty nifty looking childcare facility too if you have little ones.
I made use of the weights area and took a Zumba class with Pamela, and had an absolute blast.
Glad to have a great place to work out on my trips back home — Will make use of this place again in two months!

The facility is clean, with friendly staff members. I swim in the warm water pool… and love this pool. I have R.A. and swimming is about the only exercise I am able to do without pain. I enjoy swimming early in the morning, when there are few swimmers. I do wish there were exercise classes for Seniors that were fun but challenging. There are mostly young people at this club, but the therapy pool attracts many Seniors. I think classes for this age group could be very popular.

I enjoy this gym, and I love the Hatha yoga. I wish they offered more morning classes.

I absolutely love this gym! Very spacious and has a lot to offer, from cardio to weight training and everything in between.
In regards to the personal trainers, I had the chance to train with Ryan Baker, and I have to say he is hands down the best trainer I’ve ever had (I had 2 before him). From the get-​go I could tell he really cared about helping me reach my goals, but more than that, teaching me in a way that would ultimately lead me to love fitness way past the superficial «gains». He is very knowledgeable and caring. Always checked in with me to see how I was doing, and would really provide the guidance and support I needed. I had finally found a trainer who cared and wanted to help me reach my goals as much as I did! Every workout was tons of fun and I always felt so empowered after any training session with him. More so than the physical successes that I achieved while training with him, he equipped me with the knowledge that I will use for a lifetime!

Great facility. I get friendly welcomes and chit chat with the front desk greeters at Sport. I hear and see that they have great child care and the exercise classes seem fun and usually pretty filled. The facility tries to keep as clean as possible, but with such high use and so large so wear and tear shows from time to time, but they are friendly and timely in repairs, and if you mention what needs fixing or cleaning they are on it. So most of the issues I even have are from irresponsible or lazy clients that don’t mention when stuff gets broken.
The personal trainers are a bit full of themselves and a couple of the guys just seem to hit on women even when they are working with someone else. But the instructors and regular staff are friendly and can be helpful. Over all a good place to work out, decompress, socialize, focus or relax.

I went to this gym November 2013 because I was going to Modesto 2 weeks out of each month and needed a place to workout. I told them specifically that we were moving our offices to the Davis, CA and that I would probably need to cancel my membership then. They said — NO PROBLEM, it’s easy to cancel your membership.
Horse Manure.
We moved our offices as planned from Modesto to Davis in April 2014. In the contract, it says you need to send a letter (no email, no fax, no phone call) to the corporate offices to get your membership cancelled. So I did in April 2014. They continued to take out the $ 50/​month. Sent another letter (with a copy of the first letter) to in December 2014. They still took out the $ 50/​month.
I made a screaming phone call just this past week and finally got resolution on this from their manager Tyrone who is a great guy. He has been working to get me what he could back but they only would give me 6 months back. So in 2014 I paid $ 600 for this gym and I only got to go once.
Tyrone was a good guy but this company is SHADY. If you sign a contract you need to beware. They won’t honor my letter copies because «anyone could just write a letter saying they sent it when they didn’t.» That’s what I got told. I believe they lose your letters on purpose so that they can gain extra monthly income and pretend they never have received it unless it is via registered mail and/​or certified mail (which of course, isn’t stated in their contract).
Really poor customer service from the Corporate Office makes this a NOPE!

I pay almost $ 100 a month for access to all of the gyms for me and my family and at the beginning of my contract it included towel service. 2 years in to my contract the towel service rules changed. Decent facilities but the staff no matter which gym you go to acts as if they don’t want you there. Like it is a privilege to pay them to workout there. I won’t be renewing my contract and will be switching to 24 Hour Fitness as I feel appreciated when I workout there. Arrogance is not a good business model.

I signed up for a membership when this place was being transformed from the old YMCA. During the period when I could change my mind and nullify the contract I went back and their representative talked me into signing for one year instead of three years. Thank god I kept this new contract with the signed addendum that it was only for ONE year because when I went into the gym after the one year was up to give my thirty days notice, the guy who handles the contracts said I was wrong and that my contract was for ThREE years, according to their computer records. I Tried to tell him he was mistaken but he said there was nothing he could do I was bound to the three years. I then produced a hard copy of the contract and proved it to him. They tried to rip me off by charging me for their gym two extra years! It’s a good thing I keep good records or they would have gotten away with it. Bad form you money hungry crooks!

Good gym. But its nasty when the heavyset guys jump into the pool after sweating in the sauna. Eww! People swim in the lap pool. Its not meant to cool off in and spread your nasty sweat all over! Nasties!

Like that they have pools but wish the outdoor pool had more space around it.

I’ve like a lot of the classes they have Body pump, Fat burner only complaint about classes it Zumba which is really my complaint at every gym… I’m beyond tired of salsa/​Latin music and moves monotonous repetitive tiny foot step moves enough to drive you crazy it’s not that I can’t do them I totally can but talk about boring and the music is enough to drive a person mad!
The Latin/​Salsa was fun for a while but Modesto gyms need to move on now.
I went to a class on tues or weds here the teacher was decent she used some pop and hip hop much better movements and better beat to move to and motivate.
Overall great gym!

I am a devotee of INshape Sport gym. love the transformation from ghost of YMCA past.

I’m just visiting Modesto for a few days and needed a gym to go to. This one worked real well for me. (Many seem to be complaining about the customer service. I have no idea since I didn’t have to deal with them)
It’s got everything I need and surprisingly quite a lot of space as well. Some free weights are too old school, with all metal parts but it does the job. Just don’t drop it on your head, you’ll be fine.
The dance studio is of very large size and has hugely high ceilings. They have plenty of the plastic 3 lb — 5 lb weights that I use for conditioning.

Be careful. Beauty is only contract deep at this place…
This In-​Shape is clean, newer, and has indoor pools. The facility used to be the old YMCA, which they completely gutted and remodeled. All I can say– it is a gym. It is a nice gym, with many things to do. I still want to try racket ball one day.
Sign the contract and get yourself there, you’ll be happier about the money you’re spending. However if you plan on ending your contract make sure you read the small print. It will take at least 30 days to stop your account from getting billed.
I’m giving this gym and more the corporation of in-​shape only 1 star because although the gym is nice– their customer service is ridiculous. There are less than a handful of people that can help you and take pride in their job. However if you have any type of billing issue be ready to have to make multiple calls, keep notes of who you spoke to, follow up and possibly be dissapointed. Read the fine print, which I did. Overall they seem like they don’t like to be accountable for mistakes they make, with my money, and that is unacceptable to me.

Went into Inshape sport today because they said I could use that facility on my birthday (I am a member of Inshape Fit) the email stated I could use anything in the facility. I.E. pool, weights, tanning, everything. The less than friendly girl at the desk said that I needed to fill out a form off my email first. They wouldn’t accept my phone email for proof of receipt of the form. Also, they didn’t have any forms at the desk. No waiver to sign, absolutely no way to make this work. «Happy Birthday anyway» she said. Hmmmm, will be quitting my membership. Inshape is all about money, not customer service. «Add personal training to your membership, upgrade, etc etc» is what I hear staff telling me as I am working out… Hahahahahaha. NO THANKS

…“I found that I somehow metamorphosed into one of those Hippo-​Geezers, that I so dreaded as a youth.
I lumbered into the Steam-​room, found a comfortable spot for my rump, and started to roast it. I really started to enjoy the roasting of my blubber until some twenty somethings came in. I prayed that they would respect the sanctity of my silent vow… of silent peaceful & quiet blubber self-​roasting, basting, and meditation.
They were quiet for maybe 2 minutes, and then the horror of «small talk» began. It was their first time and they were afraid that they would be «burnt» and thought they were starting to sweat. Ugh!
I continued my silent Blubber Buddha pose in the mists of the steam room for another ten minutes. Did I have enough roasting or noise, I was not sure, but the cool, near empty pool beckoned…
The pool felt great as my steaming roasted blubbery body seemed to displace half of the water.
As the euphoria of weightless bliss, enveloped my ponderous form, I thought I heard something, which went something like this:
«Avast thar, me hearties, thar he blows, the Great White Mobile Dickhead… hurry my scurvy mateys… get out the great harpoon, before he submerges. Aye Captain, here is thar harpoon, which is filled with Grog that will take good care of the Great Mobile Dickhead, but you Bilge rats must have true aim, and plunge it deep into Dickhead’s Spine and nowhere near his bung hole. Otherwise he will rear his ugly head, thrash about, and escape… Arrr Captain».
After the delirium past, I slowly crawled up the «evolutionary ladder», as the gravity seemed to increase exponentially. I then cursed my distant relatives, who stupidly choose a life deformed by gravity, as they too crawled out of the primordial ooze, so long ago.
As I wandered around the pool while toweling off, I marveled at this In-​Shape that offered so much for both the young and the Geezerly.
I then decided to do some dry blubber roasting in the Sauna and see if it was toasty enough for me. Ah! Nice and toasty and empty of people.
Just as I was getting into a good roast, the door opened wide & then a gazillion noisy people invaded my claimed sacred domain.
That just ruined it for me, so I retreated to the locker room and changed.
Ahhhhhh! That felt so relaxing.
After dressing, I then checked out the rest of the complex, and snickered at all the people grunting, sweating, and killing themselves with all kinds of weights, strange devices, and contortionist classes…
Arrr! …**** «.
