First time i tried this location was 20 years ago. it WAS delicious, i kept coming back often but this last week was my last trip,. Food quality have change so much than i cant even tell if that was chinese food or not. Same owners but totally different food, flavorless and chicken with a funny taste on different plate preparations, our suspicion; chicken kept out of the fridge too long maybe? a BIG NO, NO… i got stomach ache/​poisoning and several other co-​workers as well… not the first time this happened though !!!

I have been going to China Gate for about 30 years, for a long time their Garlic Chicken was the best, it still is…, but years ago I tried the David Special because the chicken was not fried and I wanted to eat healthier once in while.lol. Wow, it is awesome, tasty, spicy, it is my probably my all time favorite period.
I feel bad they do not have a better location, like on McHenry, Coffee, or Oakdale Rd, they would easily double or triple there business, but where they are located keeps them less crowded, so better for me.lol. They have won best place to eat from the Modesto Bee a few times, there is a reason why and it is not the location.
Staff has always been friendly. This is the only place where I have ate, and felt bad they did not have another location in Modesto, because they are that good.
I have had a few other meals there and side dishes, it has always been good. It is difficult for me to see anything then a 4 star review unless it is personal and not a professional review on food. I have had times where it has been busy and had to wait, but it’s worth it, so if a newbie walked in and it was a crowded day there, and that person was in a hurry, I can understand a four star for that one bad experience I guess.lol.

I have gone here as long as I remember! I’ve only ever gotten one item-​Davids Special. The most amazing spicy chicken noodle dish ever! I can’t describe the sauce but it’s spicy. I love it.

Worst Chinese food I have ever had I got the won ton soup it had no flavor, my hubby got beef and broccoli and chow mien it was gross! Had to go back and return food for refund, they only gave half a refund.

Food is ok. Well ONE dish is delicious (snow white chicken) everything else I tried barely made the «ok» mark. Service is by far the worst in town. (This coming from a customer of over 18 years)

I am really picky about Chinese food, but I have been coming here for 20+ years (since I was in the womb — no wonder I love it so much!). I have tried a lot of their dishes, but my favorite is the snow white chicken!

This place is a hidden gem. I got to meet the owners Dave and his mom Frances. She is such a cute lady. Not to mention Dave is very easy on the eyes. Now on to the food. we ordered to go. All the way home I wanted to dive into the back seat and devour everything. I was patient and waited til we got home. OMG. Daves special was sooooo good I wanted more. Also the #9 Garlic chicken is very good. If you are ever near here you gotta try it. The prices are good and the people are very nice.

So two of my friends went to China Gate for lunch… they ordered the same thing and took one bite… then one of my friends being how she is started to examine her food… and she found a DEAD BUG. yes in her food like it was supposed to be there! So she took it back to the lady and told her theres a dead bug in her food and showed it to her and asked for her money back and she just goes «Oh». Like it was not big deal! didnt say sorry or anything! I will not being going back here again.

both those dishes are the best in town. I have been eating there for 20+ years and I always have either one of those dishes because they are fabulous!
Place is really run down looking… so I always get take out.

Wow. My how times change things.
Growing up, my family would get all our chinese take out exclusively from this place– but it had been years since we’ve been there and my dad insisted they weren’t even in business anymore.
I was craving Chinese, called them up– and they still were there! It looked the same inside and I suspected it would taste just as good (5 star worthy) but boy, was I wrong.
The fried rice and chow mein weren’t the normal beigey brown colors but ORANGE! and the sweet and sour chicken was fried chicken with a huge glob of BRIGHT RED sauce in the middle– so odd. My mom got broccoli beef and stopped eating it immediately because she said the meat tasted as if it had turned (I did not taste to verify– EW) the chicken in tin foil also looked alarming so I didn’t even try it (gag).
The pot stickers were okay and that is about it… steamed rice was good! ahahahah.
I will never come back here.
