Description

Specialties

In RayLen Vineyards & Winery Tasting Room, guests have a choice of three different wine-tasting flights and get to keep a souvenir glass. Visitors can also experience the exciting world of the winemaking process on an informative tour through the winery with our resident expert, John Marshall. Whether the grapes are being harvested, fermenting in the temperature controlled stainless steel vats, or aging in the oak barrels, there is always something to see on a tour.

History

Established in 2000.

Until Joe and Joyce Neely purchased RayLen Vineyards & Winery, it functioned as a dairy farm. Today, rolling hills and a winding drive romance guests as they drive through 35,000 European varietal vines. The distinctive cupola rooftop of RayLen is a beacon for the southern portion of the Yadkin Valley AVA, drawing travelers to discover a new experience, while loyal customers return for a reliable favorite of award-winning wines. Vintner Steve Shepard has been making wine commercially since 1980, beginning in PA, but migrating south by 1989 to the Yadkin Valley. By 2000, Shepard was making wines for RayLen, producing 2500 cases of five wines. Shepard has been recognized for his 1991 vintage wines by Robert Parker, while RayLen has been lauded by the Wine Spectator as a premier winery in the Southeast. After more than a decade, RayLen produces over 15,000 cases annually of 16 award-winning wines.

Joe N.

Business Owner

Joe and Joyce Neely were inspired by a trip to Italy to open a winery in North Carolina — no easy task less than ten years ago. RayLen produced its first wines in 2000 and opened its doors for business in 2001 with the completion of the Tasting Room. RayLen Vineyards & Winery became a bonded winery in April of 2001 when only four other wineries in the Yadkin Valley existed. Today, there are over twenty wineries in the AVA approved Yadkin Valley and over 70 wineries in North Carolina.
