I’ve now visited Fisher Towers a few times, and it’s quite a fun little jaunt to take. First of all, you get to drive up the river and that right there is worth the price of admission. Okay, so there isn’t any charge to drive the river or see Fisher Towers. But it’s still a fun excursion. The towers themselves are excellent examples of what the spirey landscape of Moabl is all about, but it’s also a great chance to see an incredible skyline. While you’re there at the Towers, don’t forget to turn around and look back down river. Or look at the impressive cliffs just up river at the other more established campground at the bend. To be clear, I haven’t done the hike here. It’s a bumpy little drive up to the campground and potty area, but I made it in the 2WD car just fine. I’m not a technical climber, but I’m told this area is used for some of that. I just come because the brilliantly colored cliffs are amazing in the dusk light and it’s other-worldly to view and photograph.

Fisher Towers is yet another example of the amazing geology that surrounds Moab. Instread of sheer cliffs, however, you’ll find convoluted towers that look more like gothic cathedrals. The climbing routes here aren’t exactly the best quality rock-wise, but if you’re up for adventure this is the place. If you’re not a climbing the hiking views are just as enjoyable.

This is a great camping spot. Due to the fact it’s still a little ways from Moab, and it’s a bit off the main street, it takes awhile for the camping spots to fill up. Even on the Fourth of July weekend, only half the spots were taken. The views from your tent stoop are breathtaking, especially for those who haven’t spent much time in the area. You get a view of not only Fisher Towers, but Castleton Rock(another great camping spot), and the rest of the wide open valley. This site is packed with all of your plush camping amenities; a bathroom(one of the cleaner ones I’ve ever seen), lined campsites, rocked fire pits, and two short maintained hiking trails around the base of Fisher Towers. NOTE: I have heard climbers talk about the routes up the Towers, and most of them say that once was enough. Apparently you can feel the ‘hardened mud’ moving away from you as you ascend(sort of creepy). So that steers me away, but hey, if you got the guts, go for it! For me, I’ll just linger around the base and take in the views. :-)

The rock towers are impressive but there isn’t that much at the actual site. They have a plaque that tells you a bit more about the site, a campground, picnic tables, grills — and that’s about it. The site is popular with rock climbers. We didn’t go on the hike(it was too hot) but it’s a short one(2.2 miles). Fisher Towers has been featured in many movies but for some reason I’ve never seen any of them. I have heard of some of them: Rio Grande, The Greatest Story Ever Told, and Nurse Betty. I’ve actually seen Nurse Betty but I must have missed the scene with the Fisher Towers.
