From what I have been told about this chain by a Nebraska friend I trust a ton, unless you grew up with bierox(runza sandwiches), you probably won’t like their signature sandwich. I’d tell you that your first visit to this establishment is wasted if you get one. WHY, when you could be getting some amazing cinnamon rolls and chili? The chili is only available until April 15(it’ll be back again Sept 1 if I read the calendar correctly), and I look forward to getting it at least 2 more times before the end of chili season, with cinnamon rolls. It sounds weird, but it works. Never has sweet met savory in the best way possible in the fast food universe. I’ll definitely try a burger at some point(I’m psyched for that, all the actual burger reviews I’ve read are quite good), but until then I’m going to be chowing down on some really great chili and Miller & Paine cinnamon rolls. 5BIGSTARSALLDAY for Runza! Stop eating a sandwich that apparently isn’t for your Kansas palate and get your face into something that you will actually like! Just off the cinnamon rolls and chili, I should’ve had to wait in line for at least 20 minutes. It’s that good.

In all truth, I really enjoy this fast food«loose meat» sandwich joint. I know that it is a fairly small regional chain; but, their specialty, «The Runza Sandwich», which is based on the old Midwestern/German immigrant food known as bierox, is especially tasty! I would advise only ordering the Runza sandwich and not dining here more than 1 time per month; as, the food is darn greasy & filled with calories; therefore, cannot be great for one’s health. Despite the fact that it is a chain and the fact that their food is packed full of those«fast-food» empty calories, their take on the classical bierox is well-done! Bierox, from what I remember being told and cooked by my mother, are little pockets of dough filled with ground beef and onions and other tidbits,(like potatoes) if you like, and baked to a golden brown. The Runza sandwich does a quality attempt at recreating the bierox classic! I have to remove two stars for: 1) the rest of the menu is simply a typical fast food burger menu(and not that good) &2) the food feels extremely heavy after you eat it, but I guess that is what you get when you cook greasy yet tasty Runza/Bierox sandwiches!

I like this place but not for their signature sandwich. I think the runza you have to grow up with and you love them. They are okay to me but nothing special. But they have a really good double cheeseburger. They told me they do not freeze the meat and it taste like it. The fries and rings are good but nothing to write home about. They serve Pepsi products always a plus for me. The staff was really nice and helpful. The restaurant was clean as well. So stop by and try it.

My first ever runza wasn’t what I hoped for… the best word to describe it would be «squishy». I had an original cheese runza and my husband tried the philly cheese steak runza. Both were unimpressive to us. I won’t say they were bad, and I want to stress that if this is connected to nostalgic memories of childhood and special treats growing up that it would probably be a different experience altogether. Tastes of home and childhood are like that! Crinkle cut frings(fries and onion rings) were average.

I was born and Rasied in Nebraska and these loose meat cheese and cabbage sandwiches are amazing! If you have a chance you must get here and try them! Made fresh daily!

I normally don’t like«fast food», but this place is an exception. I grew up in Nebraska and ate runza as a kid. I’m glad there is now a location within reasonable driving distance. A piping — hot runza make a great lunch.

I 1st saw Runza Restaurants years ago when I would travel to Omaha to visit friends. Because they bragged on it, I always meant to stop & give it a go every time I would come back home But never did. I just recently moved back to Mission & low & behold. Just happens to be a Runza in the area. Boy.Was I disappointed !! I had the Cheese Runza sandwich & was nothing but bland. The fries wihere the classic crimp style, same there, just bland. I would hope the Burgers are better because that would be the only thing left that I would go back for…

One of the best for burgers, fries, onion rings and Runways. Service always good. Love that place.

This was a one and done experience for me. The food here is horrible. Fast food is generally gross anyway, but this place takes the cake. I will say that the restaurant is clean, but that could be due to a lack of guest traffic. I live nearby and never see more than a handful of cars in the parking lot.

I used to visit this place every couple of weeks when I was eating out for lunch. Less so now, but still, it is better than most fast food out there. I used to frequent the Runza in Lawrence, and I was excited when I found this one here in Mission. My regular meal is the chicken strip meal with fries. Just as delicious as I remember. It is consistently good every time I visit. From what I’ve seen, Runza’s are typically family run joints. They always have the most polite customer service, even better than places like Chick-Fil-A. I have never once gotten my order wrong at any Runza I’ve ever been, this place included. Top notch customer service, good prices, consistent delicious food. The only reason I can’t give a full 5 stars is because I’ve really only eaten one meal from Runza. I haven’t gotten the burgers or any of the other things on their menu, so I can’t speak to it. They are unique in that they serve bierocks, which is typical German faire, meat and veg(often onion and cabbage) wrapped in dough. If that’s your thing, give them a try. One of my favorite lunch stops!

As a child of central Kansas, I grew up on bierocks, so I had high hopes for this restaurant(a runza is essentially the same thing as a bierock). Alas, what they serve here doesn’t quite live up to my favorite childhood food. The bread dough is way more moist than a bierock and not nearly as thick, and the use of cabbage is subdued versus a homemade bierock. Plus, I prefer the round shape of a bierock, although the rectangular runza does probably work better as a sandwich for in the car. While it doesn’t match the absolute perfection of a homemade bierock, for fast food the runza is still pretty good. You can customize the runza, too, adding burger-like toppings such as cheese, jalepenos or bacon. Runza advertises on the wall that they won an award at the state fair for their onion rings. While I wouldn’t call them award-worthy, the O-rings are certainly better than the ones you’d find at McDonald’s, Burger King, or even Sonic. The O-rings are not greasy and do not crumble easily(like Sonic’s), but they are very salty. Unless you are one of those salt vampires from Star Trek, you’ll probably tire of them quickly. The fries from Runza are fairly standard crinkle cut fries. Nothing spectacular, but tasty. I have not tried a burger from Runza. I don’t see the point. It’s kind of like the Chinese buffet that offers some Mexican and American food. You don’t go to the Chinese restaurant to eat a burrito, and you don’t go to Runza to eat a hamburger. This location is super clean, the staff is always friendly, and the food always tastes fresh. Can’t complain about any of that. This store is obviously well-managed. Anyway, if you go to Runza, don’t expect a homemade bierock. It’s not the same. But a Runza is a pretty good substitute on the quick.

The best fast food experience you’ll get. To this day, I’m not sure if I’ve ever gotten a cold meal at a Runza like you sometimes get through the drivethru. Its always hot and it melts in your mouth. I see a lot of people saying that they couldn’t get through a whole Runza, saying its disgusting or too spicy. All I have to say is go back to eating your salad because you are not worthy of such a bounty that has been given to the people that is Runza. A Runza is an indescribable collection of everything right in the world. Every spice massages the taste buds. The warmness of each bite hugs you like a overweight grandma. Then to top it off, some bomb fries and onion rings. Awww yeah. So if you aren’t some sort of loser, go to Runza.

Though I now live in the Kansas suburbs of KCMO, I spent my first 42 years as a Louisiana chow hound. That speaks volumes about my ability to sniff out and identify outstanding food. For quite some time now, I have been meaning to stop by the Runza location in Mission, Kansas. One of the reasons for my interest is the fact that their sign brags about burgers and Runza sandwiches. My life experience tells me that when somebody is proud enough of a sandwich to hang their name on it, chances are it is very likely to be way worthy. Well, today was the day I tried them on for size. I had the original Runza with cheese, a cup of chili, and a cinnamon roll. I loved the bread in which the goods were wrapped. It was on a par with poboy bread from New Orleans … that’s a huge compliment. The meat and other fillings were hugely tasty. The chili might just be the best I’ve ever had at a restaurant. The cinnamon roll was, to use a well worn phrase and mean it, to die for. Since you can count the Runza restaurants outside of Nebraska on less than two hands, I feel blessed that there is one less than two miles from my house. I will ever after be a regular visitor. Now I need to investigate the one in Lawrence, Kansas. It just might be the reason for the excellence of Jayhawk basketball. Don’t tell the folks in Lincoln that I said that.

This food is disgusting. The food is saltier than licking a block of Himalayan sea salt. That I survived my meal is only due to the miracle of drinking 10 gallons of water immediately after. I wouldn’t feed a runza to any living organism on this planet. The meat in a runza would have more taste if it were not for a package of Morton being poured into a single serving. I’m surprised I didn’t get the«runs» after eating a runza. If you haven’t tried it, don’t waste your time. And please, PLEASE don’t believe anyone who tells you it’s like po-boy bread. Some people smoke so much grass their taste buds must be fried…

Not a bad lunch, not really my cup of tea. I think the bread was good and the filling was so-so. I did notice that the store was very clean and the service(counter service) was good. I will probably try a burger with Frings next time I visit Runza.

I came here with my husband on a coworkers suggestion. We both ordered the Runza. I am not a picky eater and have never even set a meal back as a restaurant. This Runza however, could not be eaten. With one bite I felt nauseated by the combination of the sweet bread and the overdose of pepper coating the cabbage inside. Where is the meat in this item?! Although we paid $ 4.99, this sandwich had only a few tiny grey bits of meat slathered in the pepper and cabbage goo. I tried taking a few bites more of this sandwich before fearing it might give me the runz. It was too disgusting to eat. We threw away our sandwiches but the Runza wasn’t done with us. Our mouths burned long after of pepper and acidity. I have never purchased something so horrible in my life.

Once upon a time when I was 14, I found myself«so blessed» as to be uprooted from my Los Angeles life of beaches and boogie boarding to move to Omaha, Nebraska in the dead of winter(chalk that up to being a Government Brat). Needless to say, I was not amused. One bright light in that upheaval was a haven of meat and cabbage stuffed breadom called Runza. I instantly fell in love with them and a year and a ½ later when we let Omaha, I was sad leaving them(and a nice chunk of fabulous friends), behind. Well I am sad no more. Runza is now in Mission near my home *Insert Stimpson J. Cat squealing«JOY!» here* Many of you may be saying, «What the hell is a Runza anyway?» As stated, the original runza is a long soft bun stuffed with seasoned ground beef and cabbage(imagine a Hot Pocket only softer, bigger, and tastier). When I went to Runza in Mission though, I see they have branched out. Philly Cheesesteak Runzas, Chicken Runzas, and a Mushroom and Swiss Runza which was very tasty. Now not everyone will love Runza, but with all the new choices of tastes you can get in a Runza, you should be able to find one you like. I truly urge you to give them a shot. This Omaha treat is a comfort on a cold winter day. Really on ANY day.

I have been told you have to grow up on Runza to get it. Makes sense because I just don’t get it. When they first opened I was excited for something different and went by. They have big signs in their windows saying you can customize your Runza. I pull up and order one without onions and I am told they are baked into the Runza and can’t be removed. I mention the sign and the guy had no answer, but did decide to be a smart ass and point out that I ordered frings which have onions at the window. I think the look I gave him scared him a little as he also gave me a second Runza of a different flavor for free. I ate about 3 bites of the first one and half of the second and did not care for it at all. For the next three days I felt like those Runzas were turning into an alien in my stomach and working its way out, just miserable. The inside of the bread wasn’t fully cooked and doughy. The stuffings were boring and bland. Just nothing good about them. I decided to give them another try. I ordered a burger and the frings and added a pepperjack Runza. The burgers are not bad. Mine did taste like it was premade and they just opened it and removed the onions. I don’t mind onion flavor, just don’t like raw onion, but this isn’t the way to prepare someone’s food. The burgers are juicy, but could use some seasoning. Overall not a bad burger. The pepperjack Runza was pretty much a sandwich. The Runza bread was cut and the ingredients put inside. Not prebaked into the bread. Now I am just all confused. This time the bread was cooked through(probably because it wasn’t cooked with the stuffing inside), but still not that appetizing and I only made it through a few bites. I really like their fries. Crinkle cut and thicker than typical fast food fries. Nice crispy outside and meaty inside. What a fry should be. The onion rings are not bad, but the breading has no seasoning and mine were not salted. They are onion rings are a little heavily breaded masking the onion taste. A good stop for a burger and fries, but that is about it.

I don’t eat much fast food these days but when I’m in Mission Kansas and am craving some I’ll make sure I come back here! They’ve got sandwiches that are like bierrocks — something I’ve never seen anywhere else. Not quite like a homemade bierrock but pretty good for fast food! I also appreciate that you can order a fry/onion ring combo. I’m used to fast food onion rings tasting freezer burnt but the ones I had yesterday were really good. How much better can you honestly do for $ 7 these days?

I’ve heard about Runza for years. After a day at Worlds of Fun, before heading home, my husband and I decided to stop in for dinner. We wanted to go somewhere«not in Topeka». Someone suggested Runza — neither of us had ever been, so it sounded perfect. I loved the hometown feel of the dining area and the girl taking our order was great. Sweet, patient and knowledgeable. The food however, is something I think I can live without — I’m guessing it’s an acquired taste. Don’t get me wrong — I LOVE cabbage. Cooked or otherwise, but this sandwich had a very strange taste… dunno. There wasn’t anything specifically wrong with the fries or onion rings either — I’ve just had better. They were heavy or something. I’m glad I tried it but don’t ever need to do so again. :) Just isn’t my thing.
