My tenant found Kaplan to come out and check on why the air conditioning was not working after the power outage in Riverside. Technician came out for a $ 40 inspection and said it was a short in the wires and it would cost $ 220.
She got my go ahead and then was told that it would first be $ 220 but if it was not that it would cost $ 95 each additional and he would not know the actual until it was done.
OMG…what a rip off. So you would be stuck with a bill with whatever they said. So we drove an hour out there to take a look and got the advice on
from actual HVAC techs. They said it would be VERY UNLIKELY that it was a short in the wires.
It was a short in the thermostat. We bought a new $ 19.99 Honeywell thermostat from Home Depot and everything worked great.
Don’t use this company, they are a rip off.

Here it is, late July, vacillating temps in the 90’s and 100’s, and as is always predictable… the house’s central air decides to go out on protest. Sheesh. Ceiling fans just won’t cut it.
Enter Service Magic, an on-​line referral business. Over the past year, I have had great luck with finding stellar repairmen for whatever ails my home through them, and so I put in an on-​line request to them once more. They always give me three names of well screened, licensed, highly qualified local businesses. Before I could even read their business reviews, the first one calls me. Joe Kaplan, says he.
I checked. Reviewers are consistently giving him a 5 star rating on the Service Magic website (but no Unilocal feedback yet). OK! Come on over. He was willing, even with as heavily booked as he was, to come by at 8 o’clock that night, if I wanted. I opted for the next morning. His assistant, Bruce, called ahead to let us know he was on his way, promptly arrived, did a full assessment, fixed several things, guess it needed some Freon, made sure we knew that one of our units needed additional attention soon, and one hour and $ 99 later, we are living the high life again. And even Lilly-​pup (aka «Killer» to strangers) gave him her nod of approval.
I am very satisfied.
