History

Established in 1991.

Minnesota Athletic Apparel, Inc. was founded in 1991 as a manufacturer of sweatshirt fleece garments selling primarily to retailers and teams. The company was quickly awarded a patent on a unique fleece material with knit ribbing and utilized the fabric to market a stocking hat. Along with the hat, unique custom sweatshirts were developed. A strong network of customers developed from the introduction of this unique product to the marketplace.

By this time, founders Kent Larson and Steve Gnoza had gained valuable industry experience working for a headwear supplier and promotional product company and the two decided to make this a full-​time venture.

Shortly thereafter, they changed their company’s name from Minnesota Athletic Apparel to M.A. Apparel & Promotions since they already were selling to a nationwide market and they no longer were pursuing just the «athletic market.»

Business Owner

Steve grew up in Hibbing on Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range hunting, fishing and exploring the great north woods. A graduate of St. Cloud State, Steve now resides in Edina and enjoys traveling, in-​line racing, riding motorcycles and snowmobiles and being in the outdoors with his sidekick Jäger, a registered male Drahthaar (a German wirehaired pointer), at all times during the year. His time is also dedicated to volunteering in various sportsmen’s clubs and to making the north Minneapolis community a better place to live.
