I absolutely loved the Alice in Wonderland theme. I worked with Ashley who was super nice and informative. I think I went in with the expectation that I would leave with my curls fully restored and damage completely erased, like some «curly voodoo» lol It wasn’t like that (not a bad thing-​its a haircut not magic) I went in and got the curly cut. Ashley was great she listened to my needs and was teaching me some tricks of hydrated curls along the way. They greeted me with tea (they had a lot of options to choose from). The only (couple) negatives would be; I was expecting more of a styled look or my hair to look «done» after leaving the salon but the process was just a cut-​wash-​dry. Bringing you back to that damage I started off with, my hair in the front of my head is straighter/​wavy compared to the remainder being curly. I pinned it back with two bobby-​pins and it looked okay. Also, I would’ve preferred if my stylist had more of a curly curl pattern (close or similar to mine). But as far as experience and professionalism I’d give this place 5-​stars!

Amazing cut and style by Ashley! I usually see Hannah, but was set up with Ashley & she did a FANTASTIC job with my curls AND gave me a great style, which is awesome cause sometimes my curls don’t style well.

I moved to the Twin Cities 2 ½ years ago and have had nothing but really bad haircuts. I don’t have super curly hair, but if it isn’t cut right it looks like a hot mess. I’m going away next week and will undoubtedly run into my ex-​fiancé. The thought of him seeing me like this made me break out in hives. So, I Googled ‘Curly Hair Salon’ and up pops Twisted Hare. I’m familiar with the DevaCurl product, so with nothing to lose I made an appointment for a Curly Cut with MJ. First, this is not your typical haircut. She analyzed my (horrible) haircut and we discussed what needed to be done. She proceeded to cut my hair dry which, at first glance, looks like the technique of a 3 year old. But as she was cutting, an actual hairstyle emerged. Then she took me to the sink and used the DevaCurl No-​Poo and conditioner on me. It was fascinating to see the whole process and to learn the right way to style curly hair. It’s pretty elaborate, so I’m not sure if I have the commitment for it, but I learned a lot. I can honestly say I have finally found someone who knows how to cut my hair in Minnesota. Thankfully, I don’t have to sell my house and move back to California. Thanks, MJ!

Teresa has the Midas touch. I had my first dry cut with her 3 years ago and have not trusted anyone else with my hair since. By far the best salon in the twin cities for curly hair.

I have really curly hair and I am always nervous to get a hair cut as if it goes wrong even a little it gets really messed up.
People here are extremely friendly. Just explain exactly what you want to get and how you want your hair to look, they do a winderful job.
Had an appointment with Claudia and she was amazing. Made my hair look like dream come true.
She explained how to take care of my curlz too.
Make a visit once and I’m sure you would not regret.

Just had a great experience! Tried this salon out after seeing a friends great hair cut. My Stylist, Brianna was so nice! Listened to my thoughts and concerns and told me her professional opinion on my hair. Overall it was a pleasant experience and totally affordable!

My first visits to the salon — years ago — are a faint memory. I wasn’t thrilled with the cut, though I really like the salon and the products.
Fast-​forward and I was recommended to visit two specific stylists at the salon. True to what another post mentioned, I think the biggest difference in a curly cut comes from stylists with curly hair themselves. I was directed to see either Celeste or Erika, and it so happens that Erika had an opening (and it’s always good to have second stylist, just in case!).
Erika is super-​attentive and has all sorts of information and ideas to share while you are in her chair. Her knowledge is second only to her enthusiasm. She really wants you to feel good about your hair and the style.
I’ve never felt pushed to buy the products there, though I do love the Deva line. And be sure to try some of the offered beverages!

Excellent hair care for curly girls. They do cut the hair curly, so if you usually wear your curls straight, this probably isn’t the place for you. But, Ericka gives excellent cut and coloring service. And they are part of the Deva curl salon system.

Theresa is THE BEST with curly hair. She has cut my hair three times now, and every time I leave satisfied. One time, I changed my mind about what type of cut I wanted mid appointment and she was very patient and accommodating. The salon is very cute and clean, the receptionist always offers a great selection of tea, and they sell DevaCare products (along with others, I’m sure). I would recommend Theresa to any curly girl!

FINALLY, a place where people understand my curls! I’ve had two haircuts here so far, and both of them have been fabulous. I didn’t know I could have curls like this. Love the DevaCurl products also.

Since moving back to Minneapolis I have been searching for a stylist with the right combination of skills and personality — and the ability to listen, ask the right questions and make gorgeousness happen. Thankfully East 42^nd Street Salon specializes in curly hair. They use and promote Deva products (and process) — which I love. I have had four cuts here — and for the last two Rosie was the stylist. She has a great sense of humor, is a great listener, is really good at what she does and makes it seem effortless.
I am growing out my hair, but I wanted to avoid that ‘ugly’ in-​between stage so I took in pictures and Rosie listened to my wishes — resulting in an adorable cut both times. I am happy to say I have found my new stylist!

This was easily the most disappointing haircut of my life. I’ve had unflattering haircuts, but this one is not only unflattering, it’s also choppy and uneven.
I’d heard some good things about this salon and thought it would be the perfect place for me and my ringlet curly hair. Sara cut my hair, and she is charming and attentive. She seems to ask all the right questions and listen to all the answers. I am growing my hair out from a very short flat ironed cut and wanted a cute curly style.
I explained that I just wanted it shaped up to look more stylish in the process. For instance, remove the long mullet-​like growth in the back. I showed her a picture of my very long term goal of just below chin length hair. Obviously I wanted only the very slightest trim to the layers on top.
Sara spent A LOT of time explaining their products and how important they are to having the best looking curls. This all made sense and since I hoped for an adorable bouncy new hairstyle, I certainly wanted the best looking curls.
What I got is something along the lines of David Hasselhoff circa 1975, but not as cute or feminine. Seriously, it’s far less adorable and much more stuck to my head with whatever they call the slickness left over from their products. There was zero bounciness and life. I didn’t love the final look at the salon, but figured that was just personal preference, and when I styled it myself I would be pleased. I went ahead and purchased the products that were recommended and headed home, I’m not sure why, Sara is just so likable, I really wanted to believe her.
Pretty much from the minute I got into my car I regretted everything about this visit. The products are so overwhelmingly scented I instantly got a headache in the confined space in the car. I will not be using them.
Sara told me it was very important not to touch my curls so that I didn’t cause them to frizz. Also, she didn’t show me the back of my hair. I had no idea how much she had cut off. When I did get home and was able to really take a good look and feel, I was extremely disappointed. She basically cut all my hair shorter AND took out big awkward chunks of it here and there. I now have a shorter, yet more pronounced mullet, a weird clump of bangs and much more fullness on one side than the other. Most disappointing is how short she cut the back at the crown. No, it’s the 1″ long sections around my face. No, it’s how I have an earmuff on one side and hair long enough to tuck on the other. It’s just all over awful and terribly unflattering, unstylish and dated looking. And it’s also now several more months removed from having the cut I really want. It’s like she didn’t listen to me at all.
A massive disappointment. I’m just so sad every time I look in the mirror. And mad. Very mad. I was excited to have a new look, now I’m just trying to figure out how to fix this mess.

Literally the best hair cut I’ve ever had. I have spent 25 years hating my hair. Loathing the SHIT out of my curls. Not until I found Kristy at East 42^nd did I realize why. Because no one has ever actually known what the hell they were doing. I admit my hair can be overwhelming to someone who doesn’t have curly hair themselves; it’s unruly, frizzy, coarse, dry, & large and in charge. I’ve spent my life trying to rid myself of them… straightening every day, cutting it while straight and dry. Then I had two kids and didn’t have the time to straighten my hair every day, and decided to embrace what my mama gave me.
Kristy listened to exactly what I was looking for. I’ve been trying to grow my hair out after years of butchering it, so I asked for just a trim. And that’s exactly what I got; a trim. I didn’t leave horrified that 5 inches had been taken off, and I didn’t leave pissed that I couldn’t tell any difference. I also got a full foil. It was like she was in my head… my hair came out looking EXACTLY like I pictured it. That just never happens, let’s be real. I thought I knew how to take care of my curls (I even attended beauty school myself), but I was wrong. Kristy educated me on the best way to even wash my hair, what products to use and why they work best for my hair. I work somewhere I get a discount on the Deva Curl hair products, and she knew that, so she knew I wasn’t going to buy product from her, but she educated me anyway regardless. She wasn’t just trying to push sales on me.
It sucks that a few people have had a bad experience in the past here, because it almost deterred me from even making the appointment here. But I’m glad I listened to my gut, because I left so freaking happy. Kristy will be my stylist from now on, regardless of how far away I may end up living from the salon, or what salon she goes to, I will follow her!

Had my first «curly cut» here with Sara. Wow, what a change! Curly or wavy-​haired girls, this place is a MUST. They cut your hair dry so they can see the curl pattern and how it lies. Then they not only wash and style according to the DevaCurl method (the brand of products and style of cutting used here), they teach you everything while they are doing it. Sara was awesome in showing me how to wash and condition in the shower (yes, there’s a specific way for curly hair) and style. I was sent home with a nice information sheet with everything from what type of curl I have, to how to wash/​condition/​style etc. It’s truly an educational cut, which is awesome. My wavy hair has never looked curlier or better; I can’t wait to wear it natural now! Highly recommend Sara for a curly cut!

I wanted to like this salon — I really did. My sister and I bought tickets to their «Set It Free» curly hair event — live music, swag bags, wine and cheese. The time and effort they put into organizing it was evident. The food was great. There was a fun curly hair fashion show and interesting speakers.
As soon as I my sister and I checked-​in, we were approached by stylist Claudia. She offered curl assessments, and we were all over it. Claudia started with my sister’s assessment. She disparaged her haircut a bit, which I thought was unnecessary, but predictable. Once my sister’s assessment was complete, Claudia seemed to hesitate. My sister asked Claudia about my hair type, and she looked at me and said, «You have S’wavy hair.»
My sister, knowing my hair pain, pushed Claudia a little further and asked her what products I should use. At that point, Claudia reluctantly picked up a piece of my hair and said, «Well, it’s heavily textured…» by which I’m sure she meant damaged. That is an accurate statement. I know my hair is damaged. But then Claudia continued to say, «…And it’s filthy!»
I’m a pretty tough bird, but that shocked me. I guarantee my hair was not filthy (or even dirty). And even if I had walked into the salon with bugs circling my head like Pig-​Pen, there certainly was a better way to say that.
I wrote the salon an e-​mail explaining what happened and heard back from Jaclyn, their marketer. When we spoke on the phone, she did apologize for what happened but she went on to make a bunch of excuses. Jaclyn told me that Claudia was not a native speaker and had only been in the US for two years. I knew that. Claudia told us she was not a native speaker; and that she had been in the US for SIX years. Jaclyn also claimed that what Claudia had been attempting say was that my hair had product build-​up, but there was plenty of body language (observed by both my sister and myself) that indicated otherwise. Jaclyn then continued to list off a host of other reasons why Claudia was behaving strangely — including personal information about Claudia’s health that I will not repeat here out of respect for her privacy. Trust me, though, it was deeply inappropriate.
Eventually, I got sick of this and asked Jaclyn what I could do for her. She responded by asking what she could do for me, but I was not about to ask her for something. I did not stage my complaint in an attempt to collect free haircuts. If she had some plan of making this right by buying me off, she needed to offer it — not make me ask. A nice place to start would have been offering to refund the 50 dollars I paid to be insulted (the cost of event tickets) or perhaps an offer to send me some shampoo for my filthy hair.
Anyway, don’t go there. They’re not the only curly hair game in town. There are Deva Curl stylists at both Moxie and Salon Stella.

I went to get my hair colored and asked for a shade darker and a little richer and ended up with blackish purple hair. Now I have to pay for someone else to fix it because I’m worried they’ll make it worse if I go back!

This past Wednesday was my first time embracing my curls. I usually go to salons where my stylist doesn’t have curly hair and they deal with mine in the only way they know how, straightening it. On a recomendation from a friend I decided to try East 42^nd Street Salon where they specialize in curls.
I walked in super early and was asked if I wanted water or tea and settled in to read a Real Simple. Soon Sarah came and retrieved me and started dry cutting my hair. «Say what,» i said, never having had my hair cut with out it being drenched first, Sarah then schooled me on the correct way to cut/​care for curly hair.
She was extremely knowledgeable and interesting. I didn’t think the price for the cut was too outrageous considering all that I learned. I walked out with better looking and feeling hair. If you’re a curly girl I definitely suggest this salon.

When I first moved to Minneapolis almost 2 years ago, I decided I finally wanted to learn about taking care of my curly hair. I was tired of it being frizzy, and I never again wanted to see that my hair had dried into this really stupid looking triangle. Straightening had taken its toll, and I was ready to go au naturel. The East 42^nd Street Salon & Spa took me in and spit me out with the hair I was hoping for.
At my first appointment, I blabbered on about the length and layers that I wanted. Before I could get out three sentences, I was basically told to quiet down and was instead asked questions about my hair, its tendencies, and what I did and did not like about it. Kyle (my stylist) took great effort to learn about my hair before he even asked me what I wanted. When I was finally allowed to tell him, he told me what would work for and against me and provided some suggestions. Flash forward to 1.5 years later and I’m still devoted to this place. My hair looks great, and I look forward to my curly cut every 4 months.
In all honesty, I struggled on deciding whether to give this place 3 or 4 stars. Lately, I feel as though more of a «salesman» approach has begun and products and services are being pushed on me. Additionally, because my hair is more wavy than curly, and we have reached the point where I tend to know more about my hair than my hairstylist. That means I have to give him advice rather than vice versa — real shame when I’m paying him $ 45 to be the expert. HOWEVER, I rolled with 4 stars because my hair looks great and I have no plans to look for a new salon.
I trust Kyle 100% and we will forge ahead together toward my Kim Kardashian hair dreams!

I am born again, as of two days ago. The East 42^nd Street Salon took me in, nurtured me, healed injuries both emotional and fibrous, educated me, and released me back into the wild armed with the (slightly pricey) weapons needed to face humidity and hard water.
My curly brothers and sisters, hear me! Finally, somewhere out in the dark, cold reaches of the universe, someone appreciates us and our rapacious locks. For the first time, when the mild-​haired tell me that they wish they had my curls, I understand why. The grass isn’t greener on the other side; it’s greener on our side. This diva’s gone Deva. Come on over.

Should I wait 24 hours to review a beauty salon? Yes. Am I going to?
Carolyn is the shit. I came here for a deva cut, because I was sick and tired of my curly hair looking like a well used sham-​wow.
Just like Sam says, this woman takes care of you. I had 3 spectators hovering around while she dry cut my hair. She discussed what annoys me about my curls and what my end goal is. Even though my hair is fine and will hit a breaking point in my quest to grow longer, she didn’t try to talk me out of it. Carolyn asked me specific questions during the entire process and talked to me about what I have done to my hair versus what I should be doing to it.
I’ve had my hair trimmed before while growing it out, but this cut takes the cake. Carolyn is a professional and definitely goes the distance to make her clients comfortable and happy. Her colleagues were also very friendly and helpful (cups of water, tea, etc) and the woman who washed my hair took me through an entire tutorial about how to care for curly hair in the shower.
I’ve had a deva cut done before, but never with this amount of attention and professionalism.
I feel hot, dood, for real.
