The Fox Den Salon

Steph did a fantastic job fixing a botched color job and Jess gave me the exact haircut I wanted. Everyone seemed to really care about their quality of work and customer satisfaction. I will definitely be returning.

I had two very different experiences at Fox Den salon. First, I saw Steph and asked for a balayage style and a trim with bangs. She gave me a great haircut but my hair was completely ombré. It went from a dark brown color on the top to solid blonde on the bottom. I never asked for ombré and the color did not look like the photos I showed. If you are looking for an ombré style, definitely go to Steph! It was a great ombré but I felt like I left the salon with her vision for my hair, not my own. I should have said something before I left the salon but I didn’t because Steph is very nice and seemed to be very pleased with the result so I didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.
I called back the next day and the salon was super nice about having me come back in that day and fix it for free. I saw Audra and she did a great job of giving me a look that was much closer to what I wanted. I really appreciate how understanding and responsive they were when I talked to them about not liking the color.

I’ve been seeing Kristina and she does an awesome job! I’ve had a couple of bad cuts recently and she did a great job of fixing the hot mess that was happening on my head. I’ve seen her for color have also been happy with the result. Plus the prices are SUPER affordable. I made the switch because I was paying TWICE as much as Juut for very comparable services. I do miss the Aveda products and more spa like experience of Juut (Fox Den is fairly bare bones and a bit shabby) but Fox Den definitely has them beat in terms of service and value! I also feel better about supporting a small, woman-​owned salon.

At my first visit to The Fox Den, Sica gave me my dream haircut!
My hair isn’t straight, and it isn’t curly; it’s a sad kind of in-​between wavy that I’d always needed to flatiron or curl into submission to look decent. Sica gave me a cut that requires just about zero effort to look good, which is perfect for me because I hate mornings, and effort, and effort in the mornings. It’s the «it’s tousled because I’m a Victoria’s Secret model and I totally just got some» kind of bed head that I’ve always loved on others but could never get to work for myself. Sica knew exactly what to do to make that happen for me, and I love her for it.
Not only did Sica give me an awesome cut and style, but she showed me several ways I can style it (ranging from «just slightly above zero effort» to «totally worth the hassle for a special night out effort»). I learned so much, and I appreciate that she took the time to answer all of my questions!
Bonus points: she was rocking a totally sweet cat shirt for Caturday. This salon rocks.

So, this was about a year ago. I went in to get a perm. I had very realistic expectations that it wasn’t going to be perfect big curls right away. I knew that I would still be styling it in the morning etc.
While the atmosphere was relaxed and Sika was really nice to talk to, I walked out of the salon with wet, flat, wavy hair, with the instruction to «let it air dry and then curl it with my iron.» Ummm…
Basically, I spent 4 hours there only to leave with straight, damaged hair. I didn’t know any better though so I didn’t know how to handle it and I went home crying.
Lovely people, never going back there.

This rating is strictly for Brandi– 1 star. I’m giving the salon a few more because it’s not their fault. And she’s leaving anyways.
I recently moved here from CA where I had the same hair stylist for 4 years, so letting someone else touch my hair was a bit scary. Based on all the good reviews, I decided to try this place out. I arrived a couple minutes early, and waited around almost 25 minutes for Brandi. She saw me walk in, didn’t greet me, or even have the decency to let me know she was running late. Just a blank, ugly, constant bitch face look. Jeffrey who also works there finally came over when he was finished with his own client, to let me know she was a little behind. We chatted a bit. He’s friendly, and very relaxed. Super cool guy.
Then it was my turn– already NOT excited. I explained how I wanted my layers, only to be shut down and told «all you have to say is long layers, I get it» she also complained when I requested a few side bangs. «You do know how hard they’ll be during the summer right?» I didn’t go home with bangs.
She was unfriendly, looked a hot mess, and not being rude, but when you get your hair done, usually the stylist have nice hair themselves. I see how much she cares about hair from her own.
I might try this place again after she leaves, had a really cool atmosphere with easy going people. You should still try this place, just make sure she doesn’t get you.

I love the Fox Den, and I’ve been coming here for a while, they’re awesome, and care about their customers.
A few months ago I had a not awesome haircut (experience) from Brandi, but she’s no longer there.

I was on the lookout for a new hairstylist. I made the decision to CUT my beloved, bone dry, coveted, dyed, cultivated, mass of shoulder length hair. I liked to imagine that my hair still stopped men in their tracks but the reality was, I’m 67 years old… and my near shoulder length hair was not envied or sought after by anybody! It was time for a change!
I wanted somebody who would listen to every single thing I had to say about my hair history and current hair criteria, I wanted someone who would look at every picture I ever took of my hairstyles over the years so they’d ‘get’ the person I am… and then I wanted that person to proceed to get busy turning my old hair into new and improved hair that could keep up with all the looks I have had in the past! and I didn’t want ANY of the exact hair cuts I showed him from my haircut history! and I found… JEFFREY at Fox Den Salon.
I read about Fox Den Salon on the Internet and was intrigued… I made the call and booked a haircut with JEFFREY! and I left my appointment thinking these words… BEST APPOINTMENT WHERE YOU ABSOLUTELY ENJOYED EVERY SECOND OF YOUR APPOINTMENT!!! THAT should be a NEW category in the City Pages Best Of each year… I’d have to vote for Jeffrey!
Jeffrey!!! The man is fun! Personality off the charts! Skills up the kazoo! … you get my drift… the man is creative with a scissors and when you are a client with him, every second is about you! How fun is that?
Like I said, I’m 67 but after getting my hair cut at Fox Den Salon, I have a different look. … instead of haggard old lady with bone dry hair… now I feel like one of the ‘mysterious and quirky older female characters you read about in novels that take place in France! In my world… that’s the way you want to leave a salon… you want to FEEL LIKE A NEW WOMAN and I did!

Very friendly! Great customer service skills. Make you feel welcome and at home. Give a great haircut. What more could you ask for?

Obsessed. That’s really all I can say. Obsessed with my new hair, with the ease of scheduling, with the atmosphere, and with Steph. Seriously, there are not enough positive things I can say about my experience today.
Steph is my hair soulmate! She is a one in a million hair unicorn. She clearly knows her stuff and was so in tune with what I wanted. I barely started explaining what I was looking for and she understood immediately. The best part was that she gave me a few ideas on how to modify my cut a bit to make it a little more unique and fun while still being «work appropriate».
I ended up going shorter than I initially planned because I decided to take her suggestion and push my style just a little more and do an asymmetric cut – I am SO glad I did! Hands down best cut of my life. I cannot recommend The Fox Den & Steph enough.

Hannah is amazing at what she does. I walked out feeling like a brand new woman! I walked with some greasy locks filled with split ends galore. I drove home listening to Fergie Ferg’s ‘Glamorous’ featuring Ludacris feelin like a milli. Get it girl!

The Fox Den is located off Lyndale, on a side street across from the Wedge, that I have passed thousands of times in the car, but is not easily noticed unless you’re looking for it.
I’ve been bouncing around for the last several years to other highly rated salons like the Beauty Room, E 42^nd Street, Hair District, the Hive, Moxie, the ones that rhyme with ‘sha-​meda’ and others. I have been caught up in the abusive cycle of paying way too much for hair cuts that have ranged from just pretty good to mediocre. I should add that I have somewhat challenging hair, with uneven waves. Typically hair cuts are more stressful than not.
I have now had my hair cut three times with Sica. The first time I brought a picture, and we had a good conversation regarding my hopes for the the hair cut. A sincere, professional conversation, where active listening occurred, and where she interjected suggestions, ideas, and approaches. The results were very good. I looked great when I left the salon, which is no small trick for someone over 40. For me though the test is styling my hair after a cut. That’s when I find out exactly how much the stylist understands about wave and cutting layers, when it may become apparent the cut was a basic cut, and only propped up by styling product. I feel a good layered cut should require minimal styling and little fighting. The first cut was relatively straightforward to style, and I was able to achieve a consistent look every day. However the cut grew out very fast. The second cut left too much volume in my hair, and the third cut out way too much. In the end would score her cuts overall as above average. Again, I have challenging hair to cut.
The salon is not intimidating, like some other salons especially around Uptown can be. Sica is an unpretentious stylist and I find that refreshing. To me the pricing reflects that the the focus is on the service itself. I’m happy not to be paying for accoutrements the more expensive salons have, like the fish aquarium or the designer wallpaper. I also consider it a benefit that I didn’t have to listen to a lot of Uptown prattle during the cut. Others may not.
Like other reviewers mentioned, there’s not a lot of up-​selling here. For me, the first objective is to tackle and accomplish a good cut, and I find it tiring when a stylist hasn’t even cut my hair and they’re already discussing foils and treatments. Show me you can cut my hair and maybe the next time I’ll think about color, or something else.

As someone who does not regularly pay attention to hair and doesn’t particularly like to pay for haircuts, I must say I’ve definitely changed my ways, thanks to this place. The salon itself is perfectly sandwiched between a coffee shop and liquor store, across the street from a gas station and a co-​op, making it the perfect spot for running errands (ideally after you get pampered and styled to show off your new look).
Not only are the stylists experienced and knowledgeable, they are welcoming and extremely helpful. Whether you make an appointment with Dee, Hannah, Sica, or Steph, you won’t be disappointed! I never really know what I want to do with my hair going in, but am always satisfied with the results. The services they provide, the flexibility and accommodations (they welcome walk-​ins, free bang trims, open on Sundays and Mondays – where else can you find that?), and the atmosphere overall make it a great place to get all your personal styling needs met. I highly recommend this salon to everyone, and will definitely continue to make regular appointments here.

I discovered The Fox Den while frantically searching for a salon that could get me in at the last minute on a Sunday right before the holidays. I am in law school and needed my long split ends and layers cleaned up for an interview the next day. Sean did my hair and he did a great job and was fun to chat with.
The salon is comfortable, laid back, and unpretentious. Seems like the kind of place that does a lot of more edgy cuts and styles, but if you have more of a basic/​mainstream look, they’ve absolutely got you covered. I don’t do anything crazy or funky with my hair – I just needed it to look clean and professional, and that’s what I got!
The prices are also very reasonable for a good salon. It was a nice surprise to get $ 5 off for my first visit, and it sounds like they have a lot of great little perks if you keep coming back, which I will be!

I love this salon, I’ve been going here exclusively for the past 2 ½ years and seeing Sarah. I have a ton of long wavy hair and bangs. She always gets my bangs just right, which is a biggie for me. Also, she always has great ideas for little extra touches to make my long hair a little more fun than the standard layers and face framing. She’s very perceptive when you’re trying to explain what direction you want to go with your style.
About a year ago I went in to have my hair dyed to match my roots, they did a perfect job. A year later and you can’t tell where my roots end and the dyed hair begins.
The staff at The Fox Den is always very friendly and it’s a great relaxing environment, they always let me know what products they’re using but I never feel like they’re pressuring me to buy a bunch of products. The prices for their services are reasonable for a quality salon too!

Love this place! Chelsea is very good. I got a pink streak In my hair and it wasn’t as bright as I wanted it. I went back in to have it fixed no problem. The salon is quaint and cozy with an artists edge, like a salon ought to feel. Not pretentious at all. No caddy chickens here.

I’ve been coming here for years and Sica really gets me, man. She had the intuition to find the angles and layers to flatter my hair that consistently falls weird and has a tendency to look limp. This place is definitely edgy/​alt, but I’m pretty mainstream style-​wise and have always had a great cut.
It’s comfortable here, open-​air in the summers (except when it’s too hot), unpretentious, and occasionally someone will bring their dog. The music ranges from The Current to someone’s playlist that might be a mix from 1998 – 2002 when it was called «Indie music» and you had to work to find it.
Also, there are deals here for first-​time customers and bonuses for referrals and buying product.
I’ve had cuts from other stylists here that have always been solid, but no one has beaten Sica for me. You just have to find your hair soul-​mate.

I love my stylist here, she does the best job cutting my very fine hair and making it look fuller and thicker. For this reason I would love to give 5 stars. BUT, she has been late to more than one appointment, which didn’t really n bother me, but this time just didn’t show up at all. It is by appointment only from 10 – 12. I am very disappointed. I hope there’s a good reason and that she didn’t get into a car accident or something.

I’ve always had a great haircut after coming out of this place. Unfortunately every one of my stylist left so I constantly was changing, which didn’t matter because my hair has always been stellar!
However, now I see Katy and I love this girl, she is super easy to talk to, which is a new thing for me, I’ve always been the silent once wishing for my appointment to go by faster so I can get out and stop being awkward. Well the awkward has stopped thanks to Katy, she really cares not only about my hair, but mental health, and things happening in my life. She also cuts my boyfriends hair, I don’t know if any of us have mentioned this, but she does a great job on his hair as well!
They never push products on you here and they offer free bang trims and neck trims. They are all super hip and are willing to go the extra crazy with you (or maybe give you that confidence to do what you’ve always wanted) or just give you a damn good look, all the stylists are roughly the same price of about $ 30, some a little less some a little more.
Bonus for me, I’m like a half block away from them, bam. Bonus for you, $ 5 off your first haircut, $ 10 off your first dye.
Tip-​If you pay with a card, they have to ask you if you want to add a tip before the transaction goes through, for some this is super awkward, so I just always have a cash tip ready!
