TCF Bank

TCF continually finds ways to take your money. Then they make excuses as to why they can do this and they take it with no warning… When you want to talk to customer service you have to wait for a long time just to be greeted by a rude person… I Closed my account and I will never bank with them again… STAY AWAY FROM TCF…

When you setup a auto transfer of money, to happen monthly, it does not show up in scheduled transfers for the appropriate date range. This is very confusing, inconvient and dangerous. The natural inclination is to assume the transfer was lost then you setup the transfer again and then two transfers happen. This has been going on for over a year with no fix insight.

Seriously, the worst bank ever. Stay away from it.

I had no idea TCF was as bad as it is until I worked with other institutions. TCF was the first bank I opened an account with — I was a teenager — and I had been a customer of theirs for almost fifteen years before finally cutting the cord due to their inconsistencies, their unethical practices, and tendency to rack up hidden fees and inability to grow with the times regarding phone/​web transactions. At one point, they allowed me to transfer funds from my TCF account to my mother’s TCF account via the web, but they stopped that service (why?) and when I’d physically go to a branch to make the transaction, sometimes they would deny it («it is too late in the day, we won’t process this for three business days») and sometimes they’d honor it immediately (it depended on who was working). THEN: I opened a new account with a different institution and started doing my banking with them (my family members are slowly migrating, too, for the same reasons), but left my TCF account open with about $ 100 in it. I stopped checking my funds there because I wasn’t using it, and I was out of town for a period of time — when I came back, I found a stack of overdraft fees because TCF honored a merchant doing a monthly recurring charge for a service I had suspended. Not only did TCF allow the activity to continue, they then tacked on insane overdraft fees and daily fees to the point of me having to pay almost the same amount to TCF that I would the (mistaken charges) to the merchant. I recouped the merchant’s fees and tried to bring my account back up to a zero balance with TCF so that I could close it (my frustrations were not just from this), and this is what happened:
— I called the number they listed in their letter to me. This number was 1−877−823−7377
— After going through multiple prompts, I was put on hold for over 25 minutes
— I spoke to a customer service representative who told me that she could not help me; that I would need to call a different department, and she gave me the number
— After hanging up and starting to dial the number, I realized the number was…1−877−823−7377
— I went through the prompts again. I was on hold again for over 15 minutes
— I spoke to a second customer service rep. I gave her the same information. She said that she could not help me. I would have to call… wait for it! 1−877−823−7377
— I started laughing out of sheer frustration/​incredulousness and explained that this would be the third time I called that number and waited and that it would lead back to HER department
— She told me that she’d try it herself and put me on hold
— She came back to the line and said, «You’re right! That’s weird.» (SUPER weird!)
— I got transferred to a «lead» who «understood my frustrations» but could not help me. I’d have to go to a branch location in person
— I told him I was out of town and there had to be a solution
— He said someone would call me back
— THEY NEVER DID (spoiler alert!)
— I called back. Same scenario, different day (my blood pressure: ¹⁸⁹⁄₁₁₁)
— I told them there was no way I could physically get to a TCF bank, but I could give them a check over the phone or a Visa card number to satisfy the balance and I would deal with the fees/​closing the account etc separately when I was back in town
— They said, «Sorry, but we are just not equipped to handle any transactions over the phone.»
AND THAT WAS IT. No other options.

I felt like I was Julia Roberts in «Pretty Woman» holding fistfuls of cash and the establishment wouldn’t accept my money. I am not in town, I want to give them funds and close the account, and they just want to let it hang there, keep me on hold for hours, not understand their own system enough to know to not give people the 1.877 number over and over for no reason (unless that’s their game? potentially they are making money off of this if I don’t dispute the fees), and I should just… I guess fly back and drop everything so I can walk into one of their poorly maintained locations and have more issues with them taking my money?
Moral of the story: if you care about stress-​free banking, good customer service, no hidden fees or unethical practices, NEVER bank with TCF. I had been with them for over fifteen years, and in those years, I can think of nothing good about them. It is my fault for staying that long, but my lesson can be applied to you. DO NOT bank with TCF.

I went to this bank to cash a check written to me on a TCF bank account. I was charged $ 7 to simply cash a check from THEIR bank. Of course, I could save this «fee» by opening an account with them. I gladly paid the $ 7 rather than reward them for such appalling practices.

TCF Bank is the worst bank on this planet. All they do is rip off their customers with fees. The employees at the downtown location are clueless and never able to answer any questions. I would NEVER recommend this bank to anyone.

TCF stand for The Customer First. Should be The Corporation First. They give you free checks and a free account, because sooner or later they know you will overdraft. While most banks will give you a fee back once in a while, TCF will not. Additionally, they will run the largest transaction first, this ensures that if you accidentally spent $ 50 more than was in your account, and those transactions were $ 500, $ 10,$ 10,$ 10, $ 10, they will deduct the $ 500 first, triggering a $ 37 NSF fee per transaction up to 5x. So because you were short $ 10, you just paid $ 185 in NSF fees.
All of the customer service reps read they’re corporate scripts to the T, because obviously they’ll probably get fired if they don’t.

This bank has to be the worst possible bank for home loans. First of all, their phone prompts system for customer service is a joke. Also, don’t expect to talk to a human — when I did catch someone, I was transferred to voicemail. I’ll be looking to transfer my money someplace else just to get it out of their hands. I wish I could give zero stars.

BEWARE! I have a hard inquiry in my credit report from TCF bank for opening a checking account.
The worth bank ever! I opened a CHECKING account (no request for credit card, loan, etc.), provided all information including my ssn. Also I was offered a «free» book of checks, which seemed nice…
BUT in 2 weeks I received a mail that my account is suspended because I did not provide ssn and I need to come over to show my ssn. I went to bank and found out that the guy who opened my account left a day ago! I did not have my ssn card with me, they said that an operator should have taken a copy of my ssn and this was his mistake. However, they refused to resume my account. I decided to close my account and leave this awful bank.
In 2 weeks I received a bill ($ 20) for check book which was offered for free. The most awful is that the account was closed when they sent this bill and I have never received this book.

i have had more problems with this bank than any other company i have ever dealt with. in the past 10 years, they have unilaterally «corrected» my personal contact info without my request to something completely wrong, have notified me that after over 10 years of banking with them they are forced to close my account because they do not have my SSN on file?, have placed absolutely unreasonable restrictions on my money in terms of what i can transfer, how much and where, and have provided me with the most awful customer service despite the fact that i continued to bank with them after moving to a state where they do not have a physical presence. quite frankly, i didnt know what a GREAT bank is until i opened my accounts with JP Morgan Chase and transfered all of my money there. wish i would have done it years ago!

Take the business ethics of Bernie Madoff, the customer service of a hungover Soviet bureaucrat, and the organizational skills of a bunch of bonghead stoners, and you have TCF: Totally Corrupt Financiers.
I opened a business account here, a couple of years ago. At the time, there were no monthly fees, and no minimum balance. I then temporarily left my business dormant while pursuing something else, making sure there was a low-​three figure amount in the account, to hold it open. TCF then unilaterially imposed new monthly fees without notifying me. Over the next several months, they proceeded to drain my account of funds for these new «fees», and then close it, again without notifying me. When I started doing business again and tried to deposit a check in my account, I was told in no uncertain terms that there was nothing I could do. The subtext to my interactions with these «customer service» social lepers was that I could suck an egg.
I’d like few things more than to see this institution out of business forever; its fascist board of directors reduced to homelessness. By shelling out for the inevitable fees they’ll impose on you, you enable these goose-​steppers to fund even more far-​rightwing causes in the US.
Just say no. I’d seriously consider giving up a finger to ensure the painful demise of this band of crooks.

Quite horrible, I have never seen so many hidden fees hit me. They slipped in a minimum balance without any notice (the minimum notice was not there at all when I first joined and they didn’t inform me about it) then they slipped in a minimum number of debit card transactions per month again, no notice. They just keep adding more and more new fees by the day. No thanks, I would suggest looking at Affinity Plus credit union, they actually know how to treat their customers. In addition, they hassled me and basically stopped short of getting on their hands and knees begging me not to close my account. Its like trying to leave a bad relationship.

I switched to TCF a few months ago, and have not been let down yet!
