History

Established in 1930.

In the late 1920s, a solicitor knocked the door of the Ferrara’s home in north east Minneapolis. Back in those days, door-​knocking was a common business practice. This solicitor asked Mrs. Ferrara if the family needed to have its heating equipment serviced. She agreed to purchase the service with the condition that the company gave her son Tony a job, which they did. And that was the start of a long story for Tony Ferrara and his family in the heating and cooling business.

After working for some time in the area, Tony Ferrara went to St. Louis to sell heating equipment with Standard Heating of St. Louis. Because he missed his home in the Twin Cities so much, he decided to come back and start Standard Heating & Air Conditioning.

Had these guys come out a few years ago for service on my rental property and it was great. Called them to schedule a repair or new service and they said «we only specialize and have licenses to work on owner occupied homes.» Never heard of such a thing. Spreading the word to other land lords who want to pay established businesses to do work on their investments.

They really let us down. I used them to install a new furnace and air conditioning unit at my old house in the mid 90’s. They were great. The house we live in now had a central air conditioning unit installed by Standard. Attic unit, leaked into one of the bedrooms three times causing lots of water damage. Standard repaired it, charging us each time. This time their tech told us the unit had been installed incorrectly and to replace about seven feet of PVC tubing would cost $ 1300! They are advertising brand new units in the Strib for $ 2100, but to replace PVC tubing would cost over half of that??? They would not budge on the price. They didn’t care I had been a loyal customer for 20 years.
Just got the tubing replaced by Uptown Heating & Air Conditioning. Cost $ 495.

$ 175 and a couple hours missed from work to replace batteries in my thermostat (which were fine), change an air filter and clean an igniter and my furnace is still not properly functioning. I’m guessing he wanted me to feel better about my $ 175 bill so he just did some random things???
First and last time I use this contractor.

Standard Heating & Air was just at my house this morning for a leaking condensate pump in my A/​C. My window of time was between 9am-​12pm but David called at 9:05. He was at my house by 9:30 and gone by 10. I appreciate the timeliness. One of my pet peeves is when company’s give a window of time and don’t show up until the very end of it.
David gave me the good news that it wasn’t the pump that was broken only an issue in the lines. It turns out it was something I could probably have fixed on my own but I like the honesty. As far as cost goes, I expected to pay at least. $ 99 for the diagnostic. But I was quite happy I only had to pay an additional $ 10 to fix the problem.

Just had Standard H&AC out to fix a Furnace Blower that was burned out. It was not an emergency (no heat in winter etc) — but they had a tech in the area and were able to come out within 3 hours of my call. The serviceman was very respectful, diagnosed the problem, fixed it and that was it. He was very transparent about the prices — it’s always painful when unexpected costs come up, but such is life — and didn’t try to «upsell» me on new equipment I didn’t need or want.

Had the service tech out for an AC unit that wasn’t working and experienced the identical issue as one of the other reviewers here.
He was here less than ten minutes, and replaced one capacitor. Cost for the capacitor — $ 165. I looked up the cost of the capacitor, and found them to range between $ 10 and $ 20. I’m happy to pay for good service, but price gouging like this for parts is frustrating. I should’ve paid him the $ 100 for the service fee after he told me it was the cap and sent him on his way and finished the rest myself.
The only reason this gets 2 stars instead of one is the tech was excellent. It’s not his fault his bosses are taking everyone to the cleaners on parts.

HORRIBLE service. We live out of state and had SH&A give us a quote on the air conditioning unit in rental property in Minneapolis. They charged us $ 100 to go look at the unit, but many other places won’t — so look elsewhere first! That $ 100 was not even credited when we actually decided to buy something from them. Once we told them to fix it, it took 2 months for them to actually fix it, which at that time we didn’t even need the air conditioning fixed anymore. They never called to tell us when they would fix it and make sure we still wanted it done. They charged my credit card $ 600 without telling me, or even calling to confirm it was ok to charge that credit card. They only contact the tenant, who is not paying and has no say over the property. So frustrated… never working with them again. Absolutely NO communication skills.

Salesman Chris was friendly at the start, but started showing attitude after we signed the contract — we also feel now we were grossly over charged. In addition, we had a very rude, argumentative, insulting, cheeky guy named Al do the work on the boiler. He also forgot to set the thermostats correctly — the heat would turn on but not turn off. They sent a very user-​friendly senior man out to correct Al’s work.

I had a non working AC. the technician was able to identify the issue in less than 10 minutes, I had 2 bad capacitors. He replaced in under 30 minutes and it worked. The cost $ 400. $ 75 is the call fee (this includes a $ 25 coupon) and $ 165 per capacitor. I just looked up the price of the capacitor itself, it is about $ 10. So for parts worth $ 20 and labour under 1 hr, the price is $ 400. I wonder how big a rip off buying a new furnace from these guys would be.

I was looking to get an AC unit moved. I have been calling contractors, and each one provided me an estimate after looking at a picture of the area. Standard told me they would charge me $ 99 to come out an give an estimate, but would not even look at the picture. Sorry, I’ll use a contractor that wants the business.

Very professional people. I was concerned with some things and they made a concerted effort to make sure everything was top notch. They fixed my air conditioning in a jiffy last summer and were very courteous and helpful. Great company with good workers and a strong leader.

I had routine maintenance done on my furnace today. The appointment was scheduled for after 2:00 pm and the tech arrived at 2:20. The technician was courteous, knew his stuff, and was friendly. I had many questions regarding the furnace operation and upkeep. He answered all of them in a way that made me confident in the answers. As furnace calls go, this one was pretty good.
