Specialties
Open Arms of Minnesota prepares and delivers meals to people living with illness in our community who might not have anywhere else to turn. We provide expertly prepared food to people living with HIV/AIDS, MS, ALS, breast cancer and other chronic & progressive illness. We’re only able to do this work with the help of volunteers who cook, chop, deliver, and help with administrative work.
Join us as we do this work. We belong to the community, and depend on the community to support us.
We also have been working with a groups in South Africa to provide some support for meal programs in townships outside of Cape Town. We believe that we can each make a difference, and we have improved the lives of hundreds of people — both here and in Africa.
History
Established in 1986.
Our service began in 1986 when our founder, Bill Rowe, prepared dinner in the kitchen of his apartment and delivered it to a small group of men with AIDS who had become too ill to shop for groceries and cook for themselves. Soon, a growing pool of dedicated volunteers began preparing and delivering free meals to these first clients on a regular basis.
In 2004, Open Arms became one of the first nutrition organizations in the U.S. to add women undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and individuals with ALS and MS to a home delivery meal program for people with HIV/AIDS. More recently, we have made additional spaces available for individuals with other forms of cancer and end-stage diseases. Opening our arms wider to serve more people is the right thing to do. It’s a way for us to build on the promises we made to individuals with HIV/AIDS and ensure that something good comes from a terrible disease.
