Minneapolis Community and Technical College

I was planning on attending this school but the staff are so rude and condescending that I would never attend school here. This isn’t the first time that I’ve had this kind of experience with them either. I’ve also had friends that have had the same issue there.
Go to Saint Paul College instead! They are way nicer!

I liked it at first but man as i advanced classes and sh*t started to get serious it seemed no one even teachers got their stuff together! I went for my nursing I was doing my generals and I had my counselor rose I believe her name was she was great but for some reason they changed counselors on me and had some other women mean lady!
basically the counselor was mean and said RN program is hard one to get in you need straight As or else you shouldn’t go I m like nice motivation here lady! anyways i had summer classes but something happen as i needed to drop the classes and of course i got academic suspension this is back 2012 and we are in 2015 now and they still will not drop my suspension and i appeal and appeal this year i will appeal again and see if i can get a hold of a counselor to be like wtf! with my busy work schedule mon-​friday 8 – 430 the counselors are gone its a mess!
All i want to do is go back to school but they keep denying my appeals i will never ever come back here when and if they drop my appeal because i cant even apply to any other school with that suspension!
The teachers are awful i have had only 2 teacher one for my journalism and my other one from psychology which was awesome and they were teachers from the U of M
but the rest noo stay far away from this building!

Absolutely poor… I cannot tell you how terrible it was with the online process of enrolling in classes and the process of transferring. After transferring schools to a different university, they charged me some balance from their bookstore after I returned all my books within the time that they allotted for students to drop classes and return books. Apparently it didn’t do that and I was furious. Then I was charged with a payment plan that I never consented to, and I wasn’t informed what balance I needed to pay. I was also charged a late fee balance of that payment plan of which I did not consent to nor was I notified about. I get a letter months later saying that my balance will soon go to collection if I don’t do anything about it.
I call them and asked them about it and all they could say was «we told you, and yes we did inform you about it.» Just extremely cold about it with no explanation or anything. I did not receive any sort of mail or email, nor did I receive a phone call about my «balance» that shouldn’t have even existed in the first place. So I just decided that its whatever and i’ll just fork up the money. Then they wouldn’t let me pay it upfront either and they sent me to start the entire process of obtaining my student id as well as my password, which was erased after so many months ago. So I had to go in to re-​create everything just so I can process my payment even though I wasn’t even a student anymore.
I am glad that I switched schools but I will never attend this college again nor will I recommend it to anyone.
As for the college itself, they do have a few professors who are great, but because it is a community college, a lot of them don’t show much interest in you as a student. The student body is also unsatisfactory. There are a lot of students who are there simply to just be there. You’ll find quickly that although there are a few gems in the bunch, a lot of the students there try to get by with doing the least and straggling along like the group of students we all know in high school who barely made the cut. The standards there could possibly be argued for 8^th grade junior high. Of course they do offer rigorous courses but students who did not take high school seriously, and happen to pass are there, and shouldn’t be in college. They should have stayed in high school. This could explain why they take anyone who comes because they can get money for it regardless even if its taking high school courses.
I remember one year in my high school years I visited the college and found that the tour guide who was a student was extremely inappropriate. Part of the tour was the smoking area outside of their main IT building. I don’t know if the student still attends the school, but it just shows how poorly the school looks at things like that. I figured with a good heart i’ll give it a shot and maybe it was just that one student who made the school look bad. Now after actually attending and finding out they took money from me, I do not appreciate the school one bit.

This school drives me nuts, the staff are incompetent and I’m not referring to the teachers. The people who do student services and what not are just pretty much useless

I feel completely split about this school. The standards are extremely low. I feel a majority of classes here are easier than high school was. There are quite a lot of wonderful professors though who really care about each student and build personal relationships with each one. That’s rare to find especially at a cheap community college.
I feel this is a good school for older people starting school late in life and young mothers.

It is cheaper than MCAD and I’ll probably get a better job in the end, thus saving me money.
If you want to live off of the government for free for a few years then just take easy classes at MCTC and collect the financial aid. I am sure a good portion of students at MCTC do this. I know like 10.
Review:
I’ll keep it short and simple. I have an Associates in Art from MCTC. I was enrolled from 2009 – 2012, I transferred in. However, when I transferred most of my credits did not transfer to MCTC-​weird. It almost seemed like they were misdirecting me so I wouldn’t actually graduate. But this is advising anywhere. My advice: Advise yourself.
Anyway, MCTC worked for me in the way that it has a transfer curriculum with the U of M, where I am currently enrolled.
Pros: I had an amazing learning experience. If you take math take Scott Storla. If you take History take Matt Carhart. These guys are staples of the school, and geniuses.
The gym is convenient.
I had a good time meeting people; however, I met my crazy ex there.
Cons: No direction (advising), capitalist environment (They were always talking about payments), and a general apathy towards students (administration).
This is a Community College, you make the experience. You get what you pay for and such. Know that.

I have read through the negative reviews and do not agree. MCTC accepted my transfer credits without a problem.
I have a full time career and children; I pay cash for my tuition and can only take one class per semester due to my work and family obligations. This school is perfect for anyone in a situation similar to mine.
The online classes were easy to navigate although I will warn you that they require more hours of work compared to in-​person classes.
In-​person classes are taught by instructors who are engaged and passionate about the curriculum. I have not run into «no-​call/​no-​show» situations from teachers.
My advice — know what your plan is before you get started. Talk to advisors at your preferred transfer university to find out what they expect you to bring to their school from MCTC. Then get started.

Five stars if you have looked into transfer plans in advance and know exactly where you are going and have talked to an advisor from where you intend to transfer in the long term to assess the best courses to take here, then its a good place. If not, then its an awful place because the advisors are quite frankly, abysmal. The instructors know more about transfer than the advisors do for fuck’s sake. I was advised by my advisor to switch my major to liberal arts only to find out that the U of M prefers a biology major and wants you to *keep* your general ed courses to soften intensive loads. Their advising staff has quite frankly given me some of the worst advice I have ever received in my post-​secondary education and thats really sad because many students who come here are financially cash strapped themselves and are trying to save money in the long run only to get the run around here from the advisors… so advising staff, fuck you!

Absolutely the one of the worst colleges in the United States. Calling this place a college is an insult to the word college.
The Attorney general should be investigating this school for fraud.
I already had a BS and took some classes to get a Law Enforcement certification.
When I handed the admissions my transcripts from Georgia Tech, they replied «Uh, is this an accredited school?» I am 100% serious.
IF and that is an IF the instructors bothered to show up to class, most were totally unprepared and winging it. 3 hour class sessions typically ended after 20 – 30 minutes.
In one class, 25% of the grade was reciting the alphabet. I am serious.
Thousands of dollars that could have been better spent replying to Nigerian emails.
The response of the administration «Maybe you should go someplace else if you don’t like it.» Of course, that is after all the fees were paid.
Class admissions are set to favor a system of nepotism through a «Letter of Preference» for admission. E.G. a person with a PhD in Criminology from an Ivy league school has to get behind a guy that has a «C» average and 19 hours of community college but his dad is a cop and got a chief to write a letter for him.
Don’t laugh too hard this is how your police are selected.

The instructors are great. I’ve yet to have a bad one. However, the staff in every office is awful. There is a complete lack of communication, and when you call to ask a question, if and when they ever answer the phone, you can see that clearly they’d rather be doing anything but helping you.

The Graphic Design program here is top-​notch. I’m almost finished and could not be happier with the education I’ve received here. I’ve heard from many people that they recommend MCTC over MCAD and the U for graphic design (assuming you’re not looking for a 4-​year degree). It’s not perfect, but I’ll be darned if you can get a better design education for your dollar.
I do have a few issues with the advising office so if you know what program you want to go into, talk to someone in that program because the general counselors don’t know much.

MCTC is great and I wish I could do a 4 year here.
The campus is small and intimate, which I like.
I don’t feel like I’m going to have a panic attack running
from one side of the campus to the other in the 15 minutes
I have in between classes.
They are doing some remodeling, currently,
which is greatly improving the appearance of the school.
I love the new courtyard behind the school now, gorgeous!
One of the biggest things that draws me to this school
is the diverse student body.
It is truly a melting pot of culture,
which I think enhances my opportunities to learn.
When I’m in my women’s studies class, I have a whole array
of perspectives and walks of life around me, sharing their stories.
People in my classes have all be respectful and friendly.
Often times I’ve had peers in my classes that have lived
through some of the things we’re learning about,
which is so beneficial during classroom discussions
because you learn about the lives behind the curriculm.
Each classroom discussion enriches the quality of my
education simply because there is such a variety of experiences.
Pretty much all my teachers have been great.
The class sizes are generally between 30 – 50 students,
so you really get a sense that your teacher is involved with you
rather than completely overwhelmed by you.
My teachers have always gotten to know my name and my story.
Likewise, the people working in the financial aid office,
the couselors, the librarians, the coffee kiosk workers… everyone
is super nice and incredibly willing to help out.
Tuition is more than affordable, being only $ 150 a credit.
Financial Aid is super easy to apply for
and you’re pretty much guaranteed to get it.
As with most colleges, the bookstore is a rip off. (go
!!!)
Everyone is instantly accepted to this college,
so enrollment is easy and painless.
Now comes my snotty side:
if you don’t like this school… well…don’t be dumb.
It’s a community and technical school, so you get what you
would expect when you come here.
It should be a no brainer that this is a different experience
than some of the rich bitch schools in the twin cities.
It is the difference of having a semester that cost $ 1000
versus a semester that costs $ 11,000 like UofM or Saint Kates.
So, really, think about it.

I have been going to MCTC for a year and a half and I cannot stand it! I am looking for a new school. I received a work study from the school for 5000 for a year. I applied for the jobs I qualified for, which was 2. OUT OF 4 JOBS TOTAL POSTED! I went to the career services and I filled out paperwork and I wasn’t given any assistance at all. I filled out paperwork and was offered a chance to receive new interview clothes. That was it.
If you are going to go there, take a Matt Carhart class. He was one of the best teachers I have had.
If you can go to NHCC or Anoka Ramsey, do it. It stinks.

I have been attending this school since january 2007 and their have been good things and bad things.
good things:
1. classes/​instructors– I have liked all the classes ive had and had all good instructors.
2.I really like how diverse the college is overall. There are many different ethnicities and cultures represented.
3. Pretty easy overall to find your way around the campus.
However:
1. I still see alot of cliqueness like there was in high school, and im an introvert so socializing is harder for me. From what I have seen most people just want to talk to their friends.
2. Huge amount of smokers here. I dont know why so many people smoke but when im walking outside Im often coughing alot because of this.
3. I dont think theirs a GLBT club this year wtf is up with that?
4.Elevators– I guess what irriates me is that alot of people use them to go one or two floors and then they get stuck. I always use the stairs because its faster and healthier. Plus people with disabilities need to use them.

I did attend this sorry excuse for an educational institution during my senior year of high school. I have taken up all the AP classes and all, so they send me here.
The staff is horrible. Bureaucracy at its best. They have rules about rules. Yep.
The professors. I had a few current U of M Ph. D students as «professors». Yep. They were more afraid of me then I was of them. Nobody had a Ph. D and most prolly didn’t even have a Masters. My American History professor was a complete joke.
The grades — attendance is around 60% of the grade, so you really cant fail.
Students — I understand this is a community college, and everybody in the community can come here and get their learn on, but the result is pitiful. Most of them are just trying to get by and «pass». Noone really cares about learning or bettering themselves. Just getting by.
I definitely got edumanucated here.
Avoid this place.

I’m currently a student and there are good and bad and great and awful things about the school — just like any other.
I am in my third year pursuing a «two year degree» which is partially my fault and partially the schools.
The diversity at MCTC is great. I took an English 1110 class (freshman english) last summer and the professor, Rondi Atkin, was great. She did a lot of grammar lessons that the other teachers don’t do but that most of the kids in the class needed. The class was full of people from so many different backgrounds: three or four military students, 2 Ethiopian guys (who I sat with and were soo funny!), about five Oromo students, asian-​americans, african americans — seriously, like a mini league of nations! And we actually got to talk and learn together because there were less then 25 of us!
I could go on and on. I study filmmaking, and all the teachers and classes are great. I also studied Early Childhood Education for a year, and those teachers are great too!
The most important thing: you get out of it what you put in. There is very little room for hand holding in community college.

Oh my lord. If you want to spend 6 years of your life trying to get an associates degree, this is the place for you.
I already have a Big Ten education and a couple of B.S.‘s, and so my only goal here was to take some refresher and missing pre-​pharm courses. Naturally, this little community college felt the need to dismiss my 4 years of science-​laden education because «your organic, inorganic, physical, and biochemistry classes from MSU are not transferable as prereqs».
I’m sorry? Michigan State is not good enough for you people?
I have never spent so much time, aggravation, and cacapoopoo in an attempt to further my education.
All to no avail.
Guess my money wasn’t acceptable there.
On a side note, if you are masochistic enough to endure the bureaucratic nonsense from student services, get your tush into any one of Dr. Chang’s bio classes. I’ve had her for microbio and nutrition and frankly she’s the best damn science lecturer in the universe. Nutrition will fulfill your science requirement for you non-​science majors, too.
