Mercury Mosaics is a group of skilled tile artisans in the heart of the NE Minneapolis Arts District making handmade artisan tile. Recently voted #1 Arts District in the US, we offer stunning American-​made tile. Starting with lumps of clay, we cut out every shape of tile, glaze them by hand, and fire them in our blazing kilns. We then layout each tile in its place – whether it is for a kitchen backsplash, outdoor fountain, or retail storefront. We love to design something completely unique and tailored to a specific project, watch it be created and see the joy on people’s faces when they experience their new tile. It’s more than just tile, it’s a lifestyle.

History

Established in 2002.

Mercury Mosaics was founded by Mercedes Austin in the Winter of 2002 out of an interest to make a living as an artist. She started out in her apartment with a very small ceramic kiln making home accessories such as mosaic mirrors, mosaic end tables and ceramic switch plates.

Now, Mercury Mosaics has a handmade tile operation with 18 artisans creating handmade ceramic tile for residential and commercial spaces all over the world. We have 16 popular tile patterns to choose from and over 135 unique color options. Subway Tile and Moroccan Fish Scales have become the most popular for kitchens and bathrooms, although we love designing creating just about any tile that inspires!

We have worked with amazing clients such as lululemon, Whole Foods, Starbucks, Google, the Bachelor Farmer, Bluestone Lane café, and many more.

When I started Mercury Mosaics in my apartment a decade ago, I had a dream that one day I’d work with a team of people on a vast array of projects. So, I traveled to Ravenna, Italy to visit some of the oldest, most beautiful mosaics in the world. While I was there I had the honor of getting classically trained by one of the only mosaicists in the world permitted by the Italian government to restore ancient mosaics. A valuable word of advice she gave me was «Mercedes, first you must learn the rules, then you can break them». After 10 years, I have the pleasure of working with the best team of people who care just as much as I do about making and distributing beautiful, handmade tile all over the world. Now, our tile is in countless residential as well as commercial spaces. We additionally have a custom, fine art studio that is entirely dedicated to making one of a kind pieces of art using our handmade tile.
