History
Established in 1974.
Illusion Theater was founded in 1974 and presents its season on the 8th Floor of the Hennepin Center for the Arts at The Cowles Center in downtown Minneapolis. Since the beginning, Producing Directors Michael Robins and Bonnie Morris have led Illusion Theater in illuminating the illusions, myths, and realities of our times and in using the power of theater to catalyze personal and social change. In thirty-eight years, Illusion has generated over 500 plays, developed thousands of artists, and created ground-breaking educational works. Plays developed at Illusion have been produced in theaters throughout the world. Illusion’s work has catalyzed conversations in living rooms, kitchens, coffee houses, and board rooms, and has led to transformations in policy, in organizations, in students, and in individuals.

Business Owner
Michael founded Illusion Theater in 1974. Over the past 35+ years, he has guided nearly 350 plays to production.
Michael was one of the team that created Illusion’s Education/Prevention program in 1977 starting with the award-winning play and video Touch. He directed Illusion’s searing production of The Laramie Project and the Midwest première of the Kirsten Childs’ groundbreaking musical The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin. Recently, Michael directed Caryl Churchill’s A Number, James Still’s Iron Kisses and The Velvet Rut, Jeffrey Hatcher’s Mrs. Mannerly, Bill W. & Dr. Bob by Stephen Bergman & Janet Surrey, and Allison Moore’s new adaptation of Willa Cather’s My Antonia.
