Calhoun Cycle

Avoid this bike shop as there are many other options to get Bromptons. Leadership and culture starts at the top and that’s certainly true of Calhoun Cycle. The owner is an individual named Luke who is one of the most rude, unpleasant people I’ve ever met. He’s a guy who’s used to pushing a good product that sells itself and providing nothing else. ONCE THE SALE IS MADE HE WILL NOT EVEN HELP YOU WITH THE MOST BASIC QUESTIONS. He reminds me of the traditional car salesman. I’d go with NYCeWheels, CycleToGo, PortaPedal, BFold, or just about anyone else. Avoid Luke and his slick style. You will regret buying even an inner tube from this place.

My first review still stands for my previous experiences with this shop leading up to the past few months. I’ve now gone into the shop a few times with very off-​putting experiences with staff.
The first time, a couple of months ago, I walked in to buy a denim brooks saddle as a gift for someone. He was jealous of the saddle I had, and I knew the exact model I wanted to get for him, so I picked it up and went to the register. This was the exchange.
Salesperson: «are you sure you want this model?» Me: «Yes.» S:“Do you want to test ride it?” Me:“No. I want this one.” S:“Well it’s kinda weird for someone to just walk in and buy a Brooks saddle without even trying it.” Me:“I have another of this same model already, I know this is the one I want.” S:“Ohh well then. Just seems like an impulse buy.“
Never mind that walking into a shop to buy one specific thing is the OPPOSITE of an impulse buy, but if you want someone to NOT buy a $ 220 saddle from you, this is how to do it. I left extremely frustrated, but I bought the saddle because I didn’t want to call all over to find it somewhere else. Had I had more time that day, they would have lost that sale.
A few weeks later, my rear tire on one of my bikes was seeing its last days, so I decided I would try again at this shop. There was a different salesperson so I assumed it would be okay. Walking in, I was at first ignored. I walked over to where the tubes and tires were and picked up a couple of tubes, didn’t see the size tire I wanted so I finally asked the girl at the front. Instead of saying «no we don’t have that size» she said «well… most people like this size better, it doesn’t matter if your tires don’t match» and a bunch of other shit, ignoring my «ok I’ll go somewhere else, it will bother me if my tires are two different sizes,» etc. I put the tubes back and called Penn Cycle, who had the tires I wanted, with no patronizing «recommendations.»
Sorry Calhoun, you’re super close to my house, independent, and connected to a coffee shop, but I’ll be going to Penn Cycle from now on. I’m sick of being talked down to by sales staff. If I tell you exactly what I want, and don’t ask for a recommendation, just sell me what I want. That’s your job.

I would give 4 stars to my first experience here when I had a flat tire fixed for under $ 20 and in less than 10 min. However, today, I felt incredibly ripped off and almost scammed by the other repairman who simply tightened some screws on another bike of mine, put air in the tires for me, and charged $ 15! Then when I asked him what exactly he did for $ 15, he got pretty nervous. I’d be happy to pay $ 15 if it took more than 5 minutes for the repair job and if the exact details of the repair were a little more clear. However, this repair seemed as though would have been free-​$ 5 any where else. Needless to say, I don’t trust this company and I wouldn’t if I were you… Clearly they’re after the money.

I purchased a bicycle mirror from Calhoun’s online store and had it shipped to my house in California. The mirror appeared to have been damaged in shipping. I called Calhoun Cycle and the gentleman I spoke with was very understanding about exchanging the damaged item, and he said Calhoun would pay for return shipping of the damaged item. I received a follow-​up call a couple of hours later. The woman who called was very apologetic and said Calhoun was sending me a replacement, and that I should just dispose of the damaged unit I had originally received.
The bicycle mirror should probably have been shipped in a box the first time (instead of a padded envelope), but Calhoun made the return/​exchange process painless and easy! Thanks Calhoun Cycle!

Had previously gotten my bike tuned up at freewheel (a couple of years ago), and hadn’t been impressed when I got it back.
Got my bike tuned up here, and it shifts better than it did when I bought it, in addition to fixing the numerous small problems that needed repair. I have a few minor complaints in the process, but this is the best results I’ve ever gotten anywhere from a bike tuneup.

I can really only speak about the services offered here and not so much the products, but my entire experience was fantastic. I had been having some issues with my bike (a hand-​me-​down single speed roadster) and came in looking for a part. Having little knowledge of bike maintenance, I asked the woman at the front if they had any diagnostic services to help figure out what was wrong. She had me check-​in for a Tune-​up service (which was $ 30 cheaper than comparable businesses around the area), and the guy that helped me was awesome. He basically gave my bike a thorough once-​over to check for any issues and really solved my problem along the way, without a full tune-​up and for no charge. I plan on going back to pick up any future parts I may need to give this place more business.

Was there to purchase Banjo Bros backpack, and while I was paying, the repair guy asked my 9 year old son if he was going to buy the bike he was sitting on.
My son said no, and the repair guy told him forcefully «well get off it then!»
I told him that’s not an appropriate way to speak to a child, and he was very confrontational. It seemed like he actually wanted to fight in the store with my 2 boys just a few feet away.
We left and haven’t been back since.

Mail order fraud is what they delivered to me. A set of pedals that turned as if sand were in the bearings were finally repaid to me minus the sent and return shipping after having to get the Bank credit card Co. involved. They have some mouthy punks talking to people who are safely for them out of state. AVOID these schiesters and shop around. Lousy service and defective items is what they will deliver to you. Good luck with these thiefs.

I went in thinking I needed a hitch for an old bike trailer I bought used. The first person I talked to was primarily in sales and took to the maintenance folks. One of them (Hunter) seems to know everything there is to know about trailers. Even though mine is an old brand he hadn’t heard of, he recognized that I didn’t need anything. He showed me how modern trailers hook up and told me how mine works without buying a thing. And, it’s attached to a comfy looking coffee shop right next door. I’ll definitely go back.

Great store and service for my recumbent trike. Special orders don’t upset them. They helped me get my trike set up as a trainer.

This place is a great, non-​pretentious, family oriented shop with plenty of frames (to include recumbents) and accessories. Everyone took a lot of time to answer my questions and offered their advice with no sales pressure. Great folks. Will be back.

Had two tires replaced. They gave my my options and asked my main use. Also, they check the bike out afterward and let me know of a possible safety issue due to an adjustment I made for comfort. They gave me some choices that would of cost money, but said they could make an adjustment (to prevent the safety issue) and said I should try it out before to see if that would fix it. Very honest.

Update: I wrote an email describing my experience to Calhoun Cycle through the «Contact Us». I never did hear back from them.

Had a flat tire and took it in. The dude found no holes or tears in the inner tube. He put it back in and just replaced one little part, cost me less than $ 20 with the part. I also wanted to buy a bike liner and the woman at the counter encouraged me to try it on. I’m glad she did as it was way too big.
They are my new go-​to-​place for bike service!

I love this place. I had an issue with a light I bought a couple months previous and they replaced it no hassle! Great shop!

My husband ordered a Dahon Brisa over the phone for me after searching on line. This was the 2011 model and wasn’t available locally. They were very knowledgeable and helpful and got it shipped the very next day. When it arrived it had some scratches from shipment. They quickly offered to take it back for a full refund or as an alternative offered to send some touch up paint and a small credit against the purchase price. I opted for the paint and credit which arrived a few days later. Fantastic service. Thanks to Emily and Luke for being so helpful understanding.

A friendly cycle shop with a dangerous selection of Po Campo bags (for the lady commuters) and brooks everything. Yes please!

I live in Austin, TX and needed new inner tubes for my twin’s stroller. Calhoun’s had the product I needed for a competitive price + good reviews so I ordered a couple. Everything went like clockwork and I received the correct tubes very quickly — 3 days, I think. Just one small transaction, but it was flawless. I will order from Calhoun’s again.

Great, friendly staff and service. Went there for a basic pair of fall riding gloves and was presented enough selections to feel like I had plenty of choices but not too many to feel like I was overwhelmed. Friendly, attentive staff who provided enough personal examples to aid me in my decision.
This was my first visit to Calhoun and as a local resident, I definitely plan on going back. Their prices for bike service seem quite competitive, too.
