We are a nonprofit Iyengar yoga school with a mission of promoting strength, clarity, and overall well-being to a diverse population. We offer classes for every level from new beginners to advanced practitioners. Iyengar yoga emphasizes alignment, balance, stamina, precision, and inner and outer awareness.
Our teachers are certified by the rigorous standards of the Iyengar Yoga National Association. Certification typically takes 4 – 5 years to complete, preceded by years of study. We also have several teacher-trainees who are pursuing IYNAUS certification.
We host a free intro to Iyengar yoga class on the first Sunday of each month, 1 – 2:30pm. We have free classes for teens, scholarships, and pay-what-you-can classes to remove economic barriers to yoga study. We also have prenatal classes, monthly deep study workshops, and discussion groups.
Membership to the Yogashala gives you access to the studio to practice when classes are not in session.
History
Established in 2003.
We opened in April, 2003 with 4 weekly classes taught by Peggy Hong and Annie Melchior. In 2006 we incorporated and in 2007, became a 501©3 nonprofit organization. We are run by a board of directors of Iyengar yoga practitioners.

Teaching yoga brings together my interests in body/mind integration, art and creativity, science, language, spirituality, meditation, interpersonal relations, community building, and peacemaking.
A former dancer, my yoga practice began in 1996 and I began teaching in 2001. I am also a published poet, fiction writer, and creative writing instructor, and I teach workshops that combine yoga and movement with writing.
I’m a certified Intermediate Junior 1 yoga instructor through IYNAUS and continue advanced yoga studies with senior teachers. In July 2005 and January 2008, I traveled to Pune, India to study with the Iyengars. I’m the mother of 3 young adult children (who all practice yoga) and I live with my husband along the Milwaukee River. I’m a peace activist, Waldorf school parent, and proponent of everything that contributes to community, sustainability, and wellness. Visit my blog at stillinsirsasana.blogspot.com.
